Spontaneous intracerebral haemorrhage associated with early-onset cerebral amyloid angiopathy and Alzheimer's disease neuropathological changes five decades after cadaveric dura mater graft.

Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is a small vessel disease, causing spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) in the elderly. It is strongly associated with Alzheimer disease (AD), as most CAA patients show deposition of Aβ-i.e. the basic component of parenchymal Alzheimer amyloid deposits-in the cerebral vessels. Iatrogenic early-onset CAA has been recently identified in patients with a history of traumatic brain injury or other cerebral as well as extra-cerebral lesions that led to neurosurgery or other medical procedures as intravascular embolization by cadaveric dura mater extracts many

Design and Evaluation of Haptic Guidance in Ultrasound-Based Needle-Insertion Procedures.

OBJECTIVE: This article presents two haptic guidance systems designed to help a clinician keep an ultrasound probe steady when completing ultrasound-assisted needle insertion tasks. These procedures demand spatial reasoning and hand-eye coordination because the clinician must align a needle with the ultrasound probe and extrapolate the needle trajectory using only a 2D ultrasound image. Past research has shown that visual guidance helps the clinician align the needle, but does not help the clinician keep the ultrasound probe steady, sometimes resulting in a failed procedure. METHODS: We creat

Understanding Medical Students' Concerns about Explicit Informed Consent for Pelvic Exams Under Anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: Medical student involvement in procedures, including pelvic exams under anesthesia (EUAs), is a fundamental part of medical education. While guidelines exist regarding informed consent for medical student participation, there is ongoing debate and uncertainty regarding the requirement and modality of obtaining explicit consent for pelvic EUAs. This study aims to explore the perceptions and experiences of medical students who do not favor an explicit informed consent process for pelvic EUAs. METHODS: An anonymous online questionnaire was distributed to third- and fourth-year medica

Microneedles and Their Application in Transdermal Delivery of Antihypertensive Drugs-A Review.

One of the most cutting-edge, effective, and least invasive pharmaceutical innovations is the utilization of microneedles (MNs) for drug delivery, patient monitoring, diagnostics, medicine or vaccine delivery, and other medical procedures (e.g., intradermal vaccination, allergy testing, dermatology, and blood sampling). The MN-based system offers many advantages, such as minimal cost, high medical effectiveness, comparatively good safety, and painless drug application. Drug delivery through MNs can possibly be viewed as a viable instrument for various macromolecules (e.g., proteins, peptides,

Incidence of Adolescent Syncope and Related Injuries Following Vaccination and Routine Venipuncture.

PURPOSE: Vaccination is associated with syncope in adolescents. However, incidence of vaccine-associated syncope and resulting injury, and how it compares to syncope incidence following other medical procedures, is not known. Here, we describe the incidence of syncope and syncope-related injury in adolescents following vaccination and routine venipuncture. METHODS: We identified all Kaiser Permanente Northwest members ages 9-18 years with a vaccination or routine venipuncture and a same-day International Classification of Diseases diagnosis of syncope from 2013 through 2019. All cases were ch

An unusual case of abdominal pain: psychogenic vomiting complicated by spontaneous pneumomediastinum.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous pneumomediastinum (SPM) was defined by the appearance of free air in the mediastinum that was not preceded by trauma, surgery, or other medical procedures. Among the numerous manifestations of SPM, abdominal pain had seldom been described. CASE PRESENTATION: A 25-year-old man presented to the emergency department with nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain for 7 days. The presenting clinical features and the radiological results were suggestive of psychogenic vomiting with spontaneous pneumomediastinum in a patient who suffered from abdominal pain. CONCLUSIONS: The spec

Investigation of the different parameters contributing to bubble sticking inside physiological bifurcations.

Gas embolotherapy (GE) is a developing medical method which can be utilized either as an autonomous therapeutic method to treat vascularized solid tumors, or it can be combined with other medical procedures-such as high-intensity focused ultrasound-to improve their efficiency. This paper is dedicated to investigating the different parameters which influence bubble lodging inside human vasculature via 2D-modeling of bubble dynamics in arteries' and arterioles' bifurcations which are potential sticking positions. Values used in the simulations are in accordance with the non-dimensional physiolog

Cone cracks in tissue-mimicking hydrogels during hypodermic needle insertion: the role of water content.

Needle insertion into soft biological tissues is a common process in various surgical procedures. During insertion, soft biological tissues with different water contents undergo large deformation often leading to uncontrollable cracks and tissue damage. Despite the numerous experimental studies and numerical modelling of needle-tissue interaction, the results do not show any consistency mainly due to the heterogeneity of tissue properties and opaqueness. In this context, understanding the fracture behaviour of soft tissues during needle insertion is important for minimally invasive surgeries a

Unusual generalized tetanus evolving from odontogenic infection: A case report and review of recent literature.

Tetanus is an acute and vaccine-preventable disease caused by anaerobic bacteria, Clostridium tetani. This bacterium can enter the human body via a deep wound, burn injury or medical procedure; however, certain cases also originate from odontogenic infection. In the present study, a tetanus infection associated with dental origin in a 44-year-old man is reported. The case was complicated by lockjaw and difficulty swallowing that worsened over a few days, followed by a generalized spasm. Furthermore, a literature review was performed, in which six reported cases of tetanus, presumed to be of de

Motor Control Evaluation as a Significant Component in Upper Limb Function Assessment in Female Breast Cancer Patients after Mastectomy.

Breast cancer is the most prevalent malignancy among women. Conservative and operative treatment methods are associated with a risk of side effects pertaining to the shoulder complex. The surgery complications including chronic pain, upper limb and chest lymphedema, range of motion limitations, and motor control deficiencies may lead to upper limb function impairment and affect the quality of life negatively. Twenty-three women were examined in the tested group and twenty-two women in the control group. The motor control was assessed with dissociation tests as defined by Comerford and Mottram.
