Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major global public health problem, with a high burden of long-term sequelae that extend beyond acute survival and physical recovery. Sleep disturbances are increasingly recognised as a common and clinically significant consequence of TBI, yet they remain under-recognised and inadequately addressed, particularly in low- and middle-income countries such as Vietnam. This study aimed to assess sleep quality and to identify factors associated with sleep disturbances among patients with TBI in Vietnam. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2020 through phone int

BACKGROUND: Traumatic injuries of the great vessels are rare but life-threatening in most cases. Road traffic crashes are the main cause of preventable traumatic injuries in Europe, namely great vessel injuries. Management of this condition in the pediatric population is poorly established and documented. We present our experience in assisting traumatic patients with traumatic great vessel injuries at a tertiary center Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. We also reviewed the approaches and clinical outcomes reported in the literature on behalf of this case series.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospec

INTRODUCTION: Periorbital reconstruction remains challenging due to the region's complex anatomy and essential roles in eyelid function, globe protection, and facial aesthetics. Traditional reconstructive options, such as forehead-based Fricke's flaps, may result in eyebrow distortion and poor color match. The modified Fricke's cheek flap offers a regional alternative with improved mobility, vascularity, and aesthetic integration. This study evaluates flap survival, functional eyelid outcomes, aesthetic results, and complications of this technique in traumatic periorbital defects.

Background Management of complex proximal tibial fractures is challenging due to periarticular comminution and associated soft-tissue compromise. Hybrid external fixation has been proposed as an alternative to internal fixation in such cases. This study aimed to evaluate the functional and radiological outcomes of hybrid external fixation in proximal tibial fractures. Methods This was a prospective observational study conducted at a tertiary care teaching hospital over one year. Thirty adult patients with periarticular or intra-articular proximal tibial fractures were treated using hybrid exte

BACKGROUND: Alcohol is a well-documented risk factor for motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) and may also heighten post-trauma psychological symptoms. Given the frequent co-occurrence of MVC injury, alcohol use, and post-injury mental health sequelae, coordinated post-injury care is critical to support long-term psychological and physical recovery. The American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma requires screening for and intervention on risky alcohol use and, more recently, to conduct mental health risk screening and referral. However, little is known about how established alcohol screening

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery pseudoaneurysms are rare vascular abnormalities that may develop after percutaneous coronary intervention, infection, or trauma. Although many cases remain asymptomatic, pseudoaneurysms may occasionally present with life-threatening complications. Delayed presentation of traumatic coronary pseudoaneurysm as acute coronary syndrome (ACS) complicated by cardiogenic shock is extremely uncommon.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 74-year-old man presented with chest pain, dyspnea, hypotension, and signs of cardiogenic shock. Electrocardiography demonstrated anterior myocardial infar

Public safety (prevention of accidents) is the primary objective in assessing fitness to drive a motor vehicle; however, the general access to mobility should not be restricted if there is no particular risk to public safety. For people with diabetes mellitus, the Driving Licence Legislation (FSG) and the Driving Licence Legislation Health Act (FSG-GV) regulate important aspects of driving safety in connection with acute and chronic complications of the disease. Critical complications that may be relevant to road safety include severe hypoglycemia, pronounced hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia per

BACKGROUND: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common cause of recurrent vertigo and is typically monocanalicular, affecting a single semicircular canal at a time. Multicanalicular involvement, particularly when associated with canalith jam (CJ) or conversion to cupulolithiasis, is rare and poses significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 76-year-old woman presented with acute positionally triggered vertigo following a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) from a road traffic accident (motorbike slip with cranial impact; transient loss of conscio

PURPOSE: Ophthalmic trauma is a substantial yet overlooked public health challenge, pertinent across all age groups, geographies, and socioeconomic statuses. Despite being largely preventable, it constitutes a major cause of monocular vision loss and long-term disability-adjusted life years among ophthalmic conditions, with a disproportionately high burden in low- and middle-income countries. Integrating original data from the International Globe and Adnexal Trauma Epidemiology Study (IGATES) registry, this hybrid perspective provides an overview of the global burden of ophthalmic trauma and e

INTRODUCTION: In the United States, trauma incurred during motor-vehicle crashes is a frequent cause of pregnancy complications and maternal deaths, however, the literature examining behavioral drivers of seat belt use is limited. This study aimed to describe self-reported seat belt behavior among pregnant and postpartum individuals, provide motherhood-specific reasons for unbuckling, and identify specific behavioral constructs associated with seat belt behavior.
METHODS: Survey participants were asked questions about their seat belt use and unbuckling behavior. They were then randomized to a

BACKGROUND: Photic sneeze reflex (PSR) is an autosomal dominant condition characterized by paroxysmal sneezing in response to bright light exposure. This is also known by the acronym ACHOO (Autosomal Dominant Compelling Helio-Ophthalmic Outburst) syndrome. Even though it has precipitated motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) leading to trauma, it remains yet as an underrecognized entity in emergency settings.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 26-year-old male delivery boy who drives a scooter presented to ED with left periorbital swelling following an MVA triggered by PSR, while exiting a covered parking into su

RATIONALE: Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) is a key skill for managing noncompressible torso hemorrhage, but its use in prehospital transport remains controversial due to potential ischemic complications. The feasibility of REBOA during complex interhospital transfers, particularly in remote settings, requires further illustration.

Acute pulmonary embolism (PE) is a prevalent cardiovascular condition with significant mortality and morbidity. Treatment strategies vary according to risk stratification. While anticoagulation is sufficient for low-risk patients, high-risk cases often necessitate systemic thrombolysis (ST) or surgical embolectomy. Catheter-directed therapy (CDT) has emerged as an alternative for high- and intermediate-high-risk patients, particularly when ST is contraindicated or poses a high bleeding risk. Through CDT, thrombolytic drugs are locally delivered straight into the pulmonary arteries. Despite pro

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a complex head injury caused mostly by accidents. TBIs are a chronic disease process requiring life-long evaluations. A man in his mid-20s was transported to a medical level 1 trauma centre after a car accident; diagnosed with a severe TBI and Glasgow Coma Scale score of 4. During rehabilitation, he regained speech, motor coordination, bilateral strength, with vision correction via prism lenses and learnt to compensate for short-term memory loss. However, he exhibited anxiety and depression (neuropsychological examination) that were not addressed during his reco

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric cervical spinal cord injury (cSCI) is a severe form of trauma with age-dependent anatomical and physiological risks that affect treatment strategies and outcomes. Due to the lack of comprehensive national-level data, this study aimed to evaluate age-specific differences in epidemiology, injury patterns, and clinical outcomes in pediatric patients with traumatic cSCI.
METHODS: The authors performed a retrospective analysis using the National Trauma Data Bank (2007-2018) to identify pediatric patients (≤ 18 years old) with traumatic cSCI and stratified them into newborns/in

Blunt abdominal trauma most often results from high-energy mechanisms such as motor vehicle accidents. The spleen and kidneys are the organs most commonly injured in such cases, whereas pancreatic injuries are rare. Concomitant involvement of the pancreas along with splenic and renal injuries is particularly uncommon. We report the successful non-operative management (NOM) of a 24-year-old male patient who sustained grade IV splenic and left renal injuries, a grade II pancreatic injury, and widespread pulmonary contusions following a motorcycle accident. During follow-up, expansion of the retr

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injuries (SCIs) resulting from gunshot wounds (GSWs) and motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) differ in mechanism, injury severity, and care pathways. Insurance coverage may further influence access to inpatient rehabilitation (IPR) and post-acute services, thereby affecting recovery trajectories. In the United States, MVA-related SCIs are frequently covered by no-fault auto insurance with broad benefits, whereas GSW-related SCIs are more commonly covered by Medicaid, which may limit rehabilitation duration and intensity. The objective of this study was to assess the associat
