Importance of cardiomyopathy and cerebral ischaemia in the diagnosis of fatal coma in pregnancy.

A case of cardiomyopathy of pregnancy where death was due to profound cerebral ischaemia is reported. Two other similar cases are mentioned. Awareness of this syndrome may help the pathologist to establish the cause of coma and death in pregnancy when clinical studies have failed to indicate the cause. It is suggested that electrocardiography should be carried out in all cases of apparent cerebrovascular accidents that occur during pregnancy or the puerperium as there may be an underlying cardiomyopathy. The nature and the possible aetiology of cardiomyopathy of pregnancy are briefly discussed

MATERNAL MORTALITY IN BRITISH COLUMBIA: A STUDY OF 145 DEATHS FROM 1955 TO 1962.

Between 1955 and 1962, 145 maternal deaths were reported in the Province of British Columbia. One hundred of them were due to obstetrical causes. Of these deaths, hemorrhage was by far the commonest cause (40 cases), followed in frequency by vascular accidents (23 cases), infections (17 cases), toxemia (10 cases), anesthetic deaths (five cases), and other causes (five cases). Significant avoidable factors were noted in 80%. Indirect obstetrical deaths accounted for 29 cases, or 20% of all maternal mortalities. The most frequently encountered causes of indirect obstetrical deaths were cardiac (

THE NEUROLOGICAL SEQUELAE OF ELECTRICAL INJURY.

Electricity is a potentially very dangerous commodity. Community safeguards, however, result in remarkably efficient control of this hazard. Mortality figures appear to be small and constant. No satisfactory morbidity figures are available with regard to general and neurological complications in non-fatal cases. Study of relevant features of such electrical phenomena as voltage level, resistance factors, current pathway, current diffusion and grounding reveals many difficulties in reconstruction of the sequence of events involved in these injuries. These features underline our frequent inabili

Postnatal organic causes of mental retardation.

A study of 1137 retarded children from Western Ontario revealed 129 (11.3%) in whom retardation was first noted after a specific postnatal event. Eighty-three of these were boys. The most common cause of postnatal cerebral injury in this series was a syndrome of unknown etiology characterized by the sudden onset of fever, convulsions and coma which occurred in 45 patients. The nature of this syndrome is discussed and the necessity for early treatment emphasized. Other postnatal causes of retardation are classified according to frequency, as encephalitis, accidents, meningitis and a miscellaneo

Can a single injury cause cancer.

In the absence of positive evidence that a single injury can cause cancer, the tendency is growing to award compensation to persons (particularly employees) with cancers alleged to have originated in trauma, even cancers which are generally conceded to be congenital in origin.Experimental attempts to induce cancer through trauma have been unsuccessful or doubtful in result. War-wounded persons, boxers and railroad accident victims have no higher incidence of cancer than other groups.Physicians and others in a position to educate the public should strive to dispel the error that cancer followin
