One hundred consecutive aortic valve replacements were studied. Fifteen patients had a myocardial infarction as a result of the operation, and four of the five deaths in the series stemmed from this group. In the four deaths from infarction, autopsy revealed occlusion of a main coronary artery. This was attributable to coronary perfusion in three instances. All of the 11 survivors who sustained an infarct were free of angina and left ventricular failure 6 weeks after the operation. Diphtheroid endocarditis is a rare disease. A large proportion of the reported cases have occurred in the presence of prosthetic heart valves. Nine previously unreported cases of diphtheroid endocarditis are discussed along with 25 others taken from the literature. Between October 1965 and April 1975, mitral valve replacement was preformed in 66 patients with myxomatous degeneration of the mitral valve ("floppy valve syndrome"). In an attempt to estimate more precisely the frequency of infections associated with the intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD), all gynecologic morbidity resulting from infection and occurring during a two-year period in an isolated community was reviewed. Enterococci are the most frequent cause of urinary tract infections (UTIs) in our hospital, which is comprised primarily of elderly male patients. Thirty of 34 UTLs, associated with enterococci in a three-month study, were preceded by urinary tract instrumentation and not related to antecedent antibiotic therapy. Prognostic significance of postoperative changes in serum albumin and urea concentrations as well as their ratio was statistically evaluated in 73 patients with suture line leakage of the abdominal alimentary tract. Neonatal jaundice is a common problem in Port Moresby. A survey was carried out on 50 consecutive jaundiced neonates in an attempt to delineate the causes of severe neonatal jaundice (bilirubin 15 mg. % or more). ABO blood group incompatibility, G-6-P-D deficiency and infection accounted for 62% of cases while no cause could be found in 38% of cases. Fat embolism was assessed at necropsy and correlated with clinical findings in the patients who died among 854 with fractured hips admitted to hospital between 1967 and August 1971.
