Perspectives of Orthopaedic Trauma Association Members on Firearm Injury Prevention: Results from a 2025 Membership Survey.

BACKGROUND: Firearm injury has become an escalating public health crisis in the United States and is now the leading cause of death among children and adolescents who are 1 to 19 years of age. Orthopaedic trauma surgeons frequently manage the complex sequelae of these injuries and are increasingly engaged in prevention advocacy. This study aimed to characterize the perspectives of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) members on firearm ownership, injury prevention, and the organization's advocacy role. METHODS: An anonymous, cross-sectional, web-based survey was distributed to all 3,721 a

Antihypertensive treatment non-adherence and spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage: a prospective observational study from Northern India.

OBJECTIVES: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a leading cause of stroke-related mortality and long-term disability, with a disproportionate burden in low- and middle-income countries. Hypertension, and particularly non-adherence to antihypertensive therapy, represents the most important modifiable risk factor. This study aimed to evaluate the epidemiological, clinical, and radiological characteristics of hypertensive ICH and to identify preventable risk factors with public health relevance. METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted at a tertiary-care referral center in Northern

Burnout and second victim phenomenon in obstetrics: Psychological impact of maternal and perinatal adverse events, medico-legal stress, workplace violence, and organizational culture.

Obstetrics is among the most psychologically demanding fields in medicine. Clinicians must safeguard the lives of both mother and fetus while managing unpredictable emergencies, life-threatening complications, and considerable medico-legal scrutiny. Repeated exposure to maternal and perinatal adverse events leaves obstetricians particularly vulnerable to burnout and the second victim phenomenon. This review examines the occupational stressors driving burnout in obstetrics, with particular attention to the second victim phenomenon, moral injury, medico-legal pressure, workplace violence, and th

Copenhagen longitudinal study on quality of life in a young adult population with gliomas.

BACKGROUND: Patients diagnosed with glioma in the brain are prone to lowered quality of life (QoL). The risk of neurological symptoms and emotional burden may restrict participation in everyday life. The glioma diagnosis is considered chronic with a limited overall survival rate, which is particularly concerning for adolescent and young adults (AYA). METHODS: In a longitudinal and prospective study with consecutive inclusion, we followed the QoL in glioma patients aged 18-35 (n = 46). Assessment was conducted online with the self-report measures Functional Assessment of Cancer Treatment-Brain

Undertreatment of Wernicke encephalopathy in alcohol-related clinical contexts: a scoping review of diagnosis, thiamine regimens, and clinical management.

BACKGROUND: Wernicke encephalopathy (WE) is a potentially reversible neurological emergency that remains frequently missed and undertreated in patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD). Although thiamine is widely accepted as the cornerstone of prevention and treatment, diagnostic uncertainty, limited comparative evidence, and heterogeneous clinical recommendations contribute to substantial variability in real-world management. This scoping review aimed to map the available evidence on the diagnosis and clinical management of WE in patients with AUD or clinically significant alcohol use, with p

Genetic and functional characterization of a novel SERPIND1 variant in a family with isolated gastric varices and venous thrombosis.

BACKGROUND: Isolated gastric varices type I (IGV1) is a rare but severe manifestation of splenic vein thrombosis. While thrombophilia is a recognized cause, the underlying genetic determinants are often elusive. This study investigates the case of a proband presenting with IGV1, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and Long QT syndrome Type 2 (LQT2), aiming to elucidate the genetic basis and functional impact of the identified SERPIND1 variants. METHODS: Whole-exome sequencing identified candidate variants in the proband, which were validated by Sanger sequencing. Functional assessment included quanti

Acceptability and uptake of COVID-19 vaccines among pregnant and lactating women seeking services at a tertiary public hospital in Kampala, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Globally, several vaccines, including COVID-19 vaccines, have been routinely recommended during pregnancy and lactation. However, data on COVID-19 vaccine acceptability and uptake among pregnant and lactating women are limited in Sub-Saharan Africa. While COVID-19 is no longer a public health emergency it is important to take stock of lessons learnt to prepare for future health threats including those that disproportionately affect pregnant/lactating women. We aimed to assess acceptability and uptake of COVID-19 vaccines among pregnant and lactating women in Uganda. METHODS: This

Association between IGFBP-3 and longitudinal neuropsychiatric symptom trajectories in early Parkinson's disease: a longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Neuropsychiatric symptoms are common in Parkinson's disease (PD), yet biomarkers associated with their long-term progression remain poorly characterized. Insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) is involved in neurotrophic and metabolic processes. We examined whether baseline IGFBP-3 was associated with subsequent anxiety and depressive symptom trajectories in patients with early PD. METHODS: This longitudinal cohort included 352 patients with early-stage PD followed annually for up to 7 years. Anxiety and depressive symptoms were assessed using the State-Trait Anxie

Healthcare professionals and relatives in shaping the preferred place of end-of-life care and death for patients with advanced cancer: the WhereToCare qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Although most people in France wish to die at home, the majority of deaths still occur in hospitals. The choices of end-of-life care for patients with advanced cancer and how these preferences are shaped by interactions with relatives and healthcare professionals, remains poorly understood. This study aimed to explore how patients with advanced cancer develop and adjust these preferences, and to examine the roles of relatives, general practitioners, and oncologists in this process. METHODS: We conducted a single-centre longitudinal qualitative study at a French university hospital

Social vulnerability as a key dimension of frailty in Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal dementia.

OBJECTIVES: Frailty and social vulnerability are two dynamic and multidimensional constructs able to capture susceptibility to adverse health outcomes related to physical decline or arising from weakened social connections, support, and resources. While the burden of physical frailty in dementia has been well established, the impact of disadvantageous social conditions is less known. In this study, we investigated these dimensions in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) with the aim of describing possible common and individual trajectories. METHODS: 47 individuals living

Lateral Opening-Wedge Versus Medial Closing-Wedge Distal Femoral Osteotomy for Adolescent Idiopathic Genu Valgum: A Randomised Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Distal femoral osteotomy is used to correct symptomatic genu valgum after distal femoral physeal closure, but comparative evidence between lateral opening-wedge osteotomy (LOW) and medial closing-wedge osteotomy (MCW) in adolescents is limited. We compared radiographic correction, recovery, and complications between the techniques. METHODS: In this prospective randomised trial, 65 adolescents aged 12 to 18 years with idiopathic genu valgum and radiographic closure of the distal femoral physis were allocated 1:1 to LOW or MCW. Three participants were lost to follow-up, leaving 62 p

Surgical repair of traumatic right subclavian artery pseudoaneurysm after war shrapnel injury: A case report.

A rare right subclavian artery pseudoaneurysm developed after a war-related shrapnel injury in a 46-year-old female with a prior thyroidectomy. There was no initial bleeding or neurologic deficit, and initial noncontrast computed tomography findings were negative. One month later, the patient presented with chest pain, hoarseness, and dysphagia. A chest X-ray showed tracheal compression, Doppler ultrasound revealed leakage from the posterior wall of the right subclavian artery, and computed tomography angiography confirmed a 6 × 7 cm pseudoaneurysm causing 70% tracheal narrowing. Open repair w

Diagnostic timing in cerebral creatine deficiency syndromes: neurodevelopmental and genetic characterization of a multicenter cohort.

PURPOSE: Cerebral creatine deficiency syndromes (CCDS) are rare inherited neurometabolic disorders comprising two creatine biosynthesis defects-guanidinoacetate methyltransferase (GAMT) and arginine:glycine amidinotransferase (AGAT) deficiencies-and creatine transporter (CRTR) deficiency. Because early diagnosis and presymptomatic treatment are critical, particularly in biosynthesis defects, this study aimed to delineate the clinical features, diagnostic timing, and genetic spectrum of CCDS, and to describe the outcomes of presymptomatically treated patients. METHODS: This was a retrospective

Safety and Efficacy of Acute Normovolemic Hemodilution in Female Patients: A Secondary Analysis of the ANH Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Female patients undergoing cardiac surgery have a higher transfusion burden, yet they remain underrepresented in randomized clinical trials. Although the ANH trial showed no significant reduction in the proportion of patients receiving allogeneic blood transfusions with acute normovolemic hemodilution, evidence regarding its efficacy and safety specifically in female patients remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of acute normovolemic hemodilution (ANH) compared with usual care in female patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary by
