Matrix-controlled emergence of biofilm architecture shapes antimicrobial survival.

Biofilms are structured microbial communities whose extracellular matrix is widely regarded as a basis of their protection against antimicrobial compounds. Yet how matrix production by individual bacteria gives rise to collective architecture and antimicrobial protection remains poorly understood. Here, we systematically varied expression of the master biofilm regulator csgD in Salmonella enterica and found that increasing matrix production reorganizes biofilms from dense, isotropic packings into sparse, nematically aligned communities by altering cell-cell interactions. By combining experimen

Structure-Dynamics-Property Relationship Reveals the Origin of Porous Integrity in Imine-Linked Covalent Organic Frameworks.

Molecular flexibility encoded in low-frequency lattice dynamics is increasingly recognized as a key determinant of the properties of porous materials, particularly metal-organic frameworks, but remains largely unexplored in covalent organic frameworks (COFs). Here, we establish a structure-dynamics-property relationship for chemically related COFs by combining three-dimensional electron diffraction, low-frequency vibrational spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations. Using 3D electron diffraction, we determined the crystal structure of the collapsed reduced framework COF-300-AR, revealin

The Changing Landscape of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery: Aligning Access With the Clinical Obesity Framework.

Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) is the most effective treatment for severe obesity, yet it remains profoundly underutilized. Patients seeking MBS face pretreatment requirements, including mandatory psychological evaluation, documented failed diet attempts, and months of lifestyle interventions that are substantially more extensive than those required for most common gastrointestinal procedures. These requirements were initially developed with patient safety in mind, but evidence has accumulated that many lack outcome-specific support and have become barriers to care, particularly as thir

Video Head Impulse Testing for Acute Dizziness in Stroke Protocols: A Prospective Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Dizziness is a common emergency department (ED) concern, yet posterior-circulation strokes can be difficult to detect with standard clinical tools and neuroimaging alone. Quantitative video head impulse test (vHIT) provides an objective bedside measure of vestibulo-ocular reflex function and can help differentiate central from peripheral causes of acute dizziness. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, single-center feasibility and diagnostic-accuracy study of adults (18-90 years) presenting on an ED stroke pathway for acute dizziness. vHIT was performed within 48 hou

Altered spontaneous brain activity associated with intolerance of uncertainty and not-just-right experiences in obsessive-compulsive disorder: a resting-state fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is clinically heterogeneous, and traditional threat-based models do not fully explain this diversity. Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) and not-just-right experiences (NJREs) have emerged as clinically relevant features of OCD, but their associations with spontaneous brain activity remain unclear. METHODS: Fifty-seven patients with OCD and 38 healthy controls (HCs) underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Regional spontaneous activity was assessed using the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF). Clinical measures inc

Battery-type-associated pollutant fingerprints and cytotoxicity of firefighting wastewater from full-scale electric vehicle fires.

The rapid adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) has increased concern over fires, whose suppression generates chemically complex wastewater. However, the temporal evolution and toxicity of EV fire wastewater remain poorly understood. In this study, we conducted full-scale fire and suppression tests on EVs powered by nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, using time-resolved sampling to characterize firefighting runoff and residual wastewater retained after suppression. By integrating chemical profiling and in vitro cytotoxicity assays, we resolved battery-type-

Camelina (Camelina sativa (L.) Crantz) cakes in laying quails feeding: egg nutritional and sensory properties.

The present study evaluated the effect of including 15% Camelina sativa cake in the diet of laying Japanese quails (Coturnix japonica) on egg nutritional composition, oxidative stability, and sensory properties. A total of 240 quails (70 days of age) were randomly assigned to four dietary treatments: a control diet without camelina cake and three diets containing 15% camelina cake derived from the commercial variety Calena or from the improved lines Pearl and Alan. Dietary treatment significantly modified the fatty acid (FA) profile of eggs by increasing polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), par

Examining Race-Based Puberty Information on Children's Hospital Websites.

BACKGROUND: In 2022, the American Academy of Pediatrics called for dismantling race-based medicine due to its harmful impact on patient care and education. Despite this, race-based guidance regarding pubertal timing persists in the literature and patient resources. Given the role of pediatric hospital websites as sources of information for families and as data for Artificial Intelligence, we examined the presence of race-based guidance on pubertal timing in girls across U.S. pediatric hospital websites. METHODS: Pediatric hospitals in the United States were identified, and each website was qu

Can liking be instructed? Evaluations of familiar and unfamiliar food following Go/No-Go instructions and training.

Go/No-Go (GNG) training can influence food evaluations, yet the processes underlying these effects remain debated. Associative accounts propose that evaluative change emerges through repeated stimulus-response learning, whereas inferential accounts emphasise the evaluative meaning individuals derive from stimulus-response relations. This research examined whether instructions about stimulus-response contingencies can influence food evaluations before the corresponding responses are performed. Across two preregistered studies, participants received either detailed contingency instructions or ge

The Role of Advanced Imaging in Unmasking Epicardial and Microvascular Ischemia.

Myocardial ischemia in chronic coronary syndromes extends far beyond the presence of obstructive epicardial coronary stenoses. Advanced cardiovascular imaging has emerged as a cornerstone for the identification of the diverse anatomic and functional mechanisms underlying myocardial ischemia, including atherosclerotic coronary artery disease, vasospastic angina, myocardial bridging, and coronary microvascular dysfunction. Coronary computed tomography angiography, cardiac magnetic resonance, and PET provide complementary insights. This article reviews the diagnostic performance, characteristic i

Recognizing NORSE and FIRES - clinical course, diagnosis and evaluation.

New-onset refractory status epilepticus (NORSE) is a rare but severe neurological condition affecting both children and adults without prior epilepsy and without an identifiable acute cause at presentation. A substantial proportion of patients progress to super-refractory status epilepticus, which is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Despite its clinical severity, diagnostic strategies remain heterogeneous and are largely based on expert consensus due to limited high-quality evidence. This article summarizes current concepts in the definition, clinical recognition, and diagnostic e

Emerging Platform Trials for the Treatment of Newly Diagnosed and Recurrent Glioblastoma.

Glioblastoma (GBM) remains highly morbid despite maximal safe resection, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, prompting the expansion of clinical investigation. This review examines 4 emerging therapeutic strategies for newly diagnosed and recurrent GBM that address major biological barriers to treatment: tumor immunosuppressive microenvironment, antigen heterogeneity, and the blood-brain barrier. In a subset of patients, early clinical studies demonstrate promise; however, more evidence is necessary prior to its incorporation into the mainstay therapeutic landscape.

Expected clinical and patient-centered outcomes associated with different rehabilitation strategies for severe maxillary atrophy: an international cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Severe maxillary atrophy remains one of the most challenging conditions in implant dentistry and maxillofacial surgery. Multiple rehabilitation strategies are currently available, including regenerative procedures, alternative implant-based approaches, and hybrid concepts. Although clinical outcomes have been widely reported, limited information exists regarding clinician-reported expectations associated with different rehabilitation strategies when evaluating the same clinical scenario. The aim of this study was to investigate clinician-reported expectations associated with differ

Hypertriglyceridemia: Causes, Consequences, Diagnosis, and Management.

Managing hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) requires more than lowering triglyceride (TG) levels. Two related but clinically distinct risk domains often guide management: residual atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk and acute pancreatitis (AP) risk. Their relative importance varies among patients and may change over time. Residual ASCVD risk is driven in part by the burden of atherogenic apolipoprotein B (apoB)-containing particles, particularly TG-rich lipoproteins and their cholesterol-enriched remnants, whereas AP risk increases with severe HTG and rises further in extreme HTG, in w

Vortex-Force-Driven Particle Assembly around Electrode-Fouling Insulating Oil Droplets Is Influenced by Electrolyte Composition.

Our previous reports demonstrated augmented electrodeposition rates at the insulating oil droplet-electrolyte-electrode triple point. This enhancement was hypothesized to arise from convection that results from a localized increase in current density. Here, we use time-resolved microscopy to track gold microstructures migrating toward the triple point and to elucidate how electrolyte identity and concentration influence electrolysis-induced convection around a fluid insulating droplet fouling an electrode. By fitting a logistic model on the microscopy data, the maximum particle assembly rate (
