Leiomyosarcoma of the small intestine is a rare malignancy. Despite advancements in diagnostic imaging, leiomyosarcoma remains challenging to diagnose preoperatively due to its nonspecific presentation. This study presents a 72-year-old female with a 3 cm ileal leiomyosarcoma, diagnosed via histopathology. Post-surgery, she recovered well with no recurrence at 4 months. A review of 13 cases showed ages 45-90 years (mean: 69.8), with males affected twice as often. Abdominal pain was the most common symptom, and metastases occurred in several cases to the lungs, liver, and other organs. The mort

A 13-year-old castrated male Shetland sheepdog presented with loss of appetite, jaundice, and lethargy. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed a hypoechoic mass in the midline of the liver relative to the normal liver parenchyma. CT revealed a hepatic mass with low attenuation (28 HU) on precontrast CT and peripheral contrast enhancement in all phases: arterial phase (93 HU), portal phase (102 HU), and delayed phase (86 HU). The mass size was 4.6 × 3.2 × 3.4 cm. Postmortem MRI findings showed that the hepatic mass had low and high signal intensities on T1 and T2-weighted images, respectively. Hist

Human occupational exposure to ionizing radiation has been linked to increased risks of developing cancers, including solid tumors. In particular, 239Pu, used in the production of nuclear weapons, has been associated with a higher risk of malignancies of the lungs, liver, and bones, but the specific patterns of malignant histology have not been well described in humans. We assessed the pathological characteristics of liver cancers that occurred in a Russian cohort of nuclear workers from the Mayak Production Association, with a special emphasis on angiosarcoma, and studied the relationships be

INTRODUCTION: Kaposi sarcoma is a vascular tumour associated with human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8) infection. Due to immunosuppressive treatment, solid organ transplant recipients infected with HHV-8 have increased risk of Kaposi sarcoma. The risk of being infected with HHV-8 is associated with higher age, male sex, non-White ethnicity, being a man who has sex with men (MSM) and use of recreational drugs. Post-transplant Kaposi sarcoma is rare in HHV-8 low-prevalence areas. We report the first case of a liver transplant recipient developing Kaposi sarcoma following donor-transmitted HHV-8 infection

Germline pathogenic variants in MYC-associated factor X (MAX) are a rare cause of hereditary pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma (PPGL) syndrome, typically presenting with pheochromocytomas (PCC). Although MAX-related PPGLs are generally characterized by an adrenergic phenotype and bilateral tumors in 67% of cases, the tumor spectrum associated with MAX pathogenic variants remains poorly understood. We present a case of a 28-year-old man with a germline MAX pathogenic variant (c.64-2A>G) who developed bilateral PCC and later, a liver sarcoma with a TP53 variant and PLEKHO2::BRAF gene fusion. Th

This investigation explored the chemopreventive effects of eugenol on diethylnitrosamine (DENA) and acetylaminofluorene (AAF)-induced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in Wistar rats. To induce HCC, DENA was administered intraperitoneally once per week for two weeks at a concentration of 150 mg/kg body weight (b.w.), followed by oral AAF administration for 3 weeks, four times a week, at a dosage of 20 mg/kg b.w. After these three weeks, the rats were treated with eugenol every other day for 17 weeks at a dosage of 20 mg/kg b.w. In vitro, eugenol reduced cell viability (IC50 of 189.29 µg/mL) and i

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are rare gastrointestinal mesenchymal neoplasms. While the liver and peritoneum are the most common metastatic sites, skin involvement is rare. Nevertheless, recognizing skin metastases is crucial as it guides targeted treatment and indicates the possibility of widespread disease. Skin metastases pose diagnostic challenges due to histopathologic and clinical variability, often resembling other tumors. We present an 81-year-old female with metastatic GIST involving the scalp with corroborative molecular data. This case underscores the fundamental nature o

BACKGROUND: Cancer is marked by rapid abnormal cell growth, leading to high mortality. The human Ribonuclease K (RNASEK) gene is involved in various cellular processes, such as viral infection, immune response, and maintaining cellular homeostasis. RNASEK, found in metazoans, contributes to tumor development, but the lack of systemic pan-cancer investigation into the diagnostic and prognostic function of RNASEK, epigenetic regulation, and interaction with the immune cell infiltration remains unclear. This study investigated RNASEK as a potential pan-cancer biomarker.

BACKGROUND: Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is a rare mesenchymal malignant tumor derived from follicular dendritic cells. FDCS arises mainly from lymph nodes and rarely are extranodal. Diagnostic dilemma occurs due to the same micromorphology as other sarcomas and lymphomas. Curative radical resection is the standard therapy, and adjuvant treatment is not defined. For unresectable disease, chemotherapy and radiotherapy are indicated with variable response rates. Due to its rarity, a standard treatment is not yet defined.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to analyze the clinicopathological

Background/Objectives: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at an increased risk of various cancers; such as colorectal cancer; skin cancer; bile duct cancer; or lymphoma; with IBD itself not being the sole cause. Inappropriate or ineffective IBD therapy with a continuous inflammatory burden within the gut leads to an increased risk of malignancy. Our study aimed to investigate the risk of malignancy in our patient cohort; focusing on concomitant therapy; disease duration; and inflammatory burden. Methods: A total of 333 consecutive adult patients with IBD (Crohn's disease; ulcer

BACKGROUND/AIM: Doxorubicin (DOX) is the most impactful drug developed for osteosarcoma. However, despite its therapeutic effects, it also causes serious side effects, such as cardiotoxicity and hemotoxicity. To address this, we developed a novel DOX prodrug that exhibits high antitumor activity specifically in hypoxic regions while demonstrating low toxicity in normal organs. Based on these properties, we evaluated its efficacy against osteosarcoma with the aim of significantly reducing side effects while maintaining therapeutic efficacy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: To evaluate antitumor effects,

INTRODUCTION: Angiosarcoma is a rare, aggressive malignancy of endothelial origin, accounting for 1-2 % of soft tissue sarcomas. It occurs in cutaneous (C-AS) and non-cutaneous (NC-AS) forms, with distinct clinical behaviors and prognoses. While C-AS primarily affects the head and neck, NC-AS involves visceral organs such as the heart, liver, and breast. Despite advances in treatment, survival remains poor, and recurrence is common.
METHODS: This retrospective, single-center cohort study analyzed 30 patients diagnosed with angiosarcoma at the University Hospital Zurich (2000-2023). The study

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a malignancy with a complex pathogenesis, course, and prognosis with increasing incidence. The most significant contributing factor to the development of HCC is the chronic process of inflammation and remodeling of the cirrhotic liver, in which the interaction between the tumor microenvironment (TME) and cancer cells plays a pivotal role. In recent years, increasing focus has been directed toward the role of platelets (PLTs) in mediating interactions between tumor cells and the TME and in the progression and spread of HCC, as well as other cancers. Due to thei

INTRODUCTION: Undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma (UES) of the liver (UESL) is a tumor that is rare in adults. UESL is composed of undifferentiated mesenchymal tumor cells, with characteristic normal bile duct cells found at the tumor periphery. We present a rare case of UESL containing an adenocarcinoma component in one part of the tumor.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 68-year-old male had a tumor with an 8-cm diameter in the left lateral liver segment. CT showed a cystic tumor with a solid component and a heterogeneous area. In the solid component, the contrast effect was weak in the arterial phase an

Budd-Chiari syndrome is a rare condition characterized by obstruction of the hepatic veins or inferior vena cava, leading to portal hypertension and liver dysfunction. While common etiologies include thrombosis or malignancy, we present, to our knowledge, the first reported case in the English-language literature of Budd-Chiari syndrome secondary to metastatic undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma. A 52-year-old male with an extensive history of metastatic undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma presented with a 10-day history of vomiting and abdominal pain. A contrast-enhanced computed tomography

Malignant triton tumor (MTT) is a rare subset (5%) of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs), classified as soft-tissue sarcomas. MTT is an orphan disease characterized by rhabdomyoblastic differentiation, therapeutic resistance, and a sinister prognosis. The neoplasms classically arise at the trunk, head and neck region, and extremities. In 50% of the cases, MTT is associated with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), a relatively common autosomal dominant cancer-prone disorder of the central nervous system. Few cases of MTT in the gastrointestinal tract have been published, including es

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive inflammatory follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (EBV+ IFDCS) is a rare indolent malignant neoplasm, which occurs almost exclusively in the liver or spleen and may arise from a common EBV-infected mesenchymal cell that differentiates along the follicular or fibroblastic dendritic cell pathway. Despite its rarity, it presents a pressing need for an improved understanding of its genetic underpinnings and potential treatment strategies for recurrent or disseminated cases. To address this, we conducted comprehensive whole-exome sequencing and transcriptome sequencin

Solitary fibrous tumours (SFT) are very rare mesenchymal neoplasms. While surgery remains a standard treatment for localised disease, effective and long term treatment options for metastatic disease are lacking, making the use of aldoxorubicin a novel and promising systemic treatment in SFTs. We present a 30-year-old male who underwent surgical resection for a solitary fibrous tumour of the right leg. Postoperative imaging revealed metastatic disease in the liver and left upper quadrant. He was initially treated with pazopanib but experienced disease progression after 24 weeks. The patient was
