In this review we will summarize recent data on reactive oxygen species-induced mutagenesis and consider its relationship to tumorigenesis in humans. With the use of a single-stranded DNA template it has been possible to correlate oxygen radical-induced chemical alterations at specific nucleotides with the types of mutations that occur when these altered bases are copied by DNA polymerases. Seventy patients with primary liver cell carcinoma (PLC) were studied for the occurrence and relative incidence of paraneoplastic syndromes (PNS) between 1985 and 1990. Here we communicate results of the study involving hypercholesterolaemia, hypercalcemia, hypoglycaemia, gynaecomastia and polycythaemia. The case described is of a primary liver cell carcinoma (PLCC), which was initially misdiagnosed as hepatic hydatid disease. The computed tomographic appearances of hepatic hydatid disease are often characteristic although not specific. When supported by the clinical findings, however, they will probably not be confused with other liver masses. In this case the presence of peripheral rim calcification, commonly seen in hydatid disease but which has not been previously noted in PLCC, lead to an erroneous diagnosis.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to assess the incidence and aetiology of fever of unknown origin in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients, and to evaluate the usefulness of the main diagnostic procedures.
DESIGN: A retrospective study.
SETTING AND SUBJECTS: We reviewed the records of 270 HIV-infected patients who were hospitalized for the first time in a department of infectious and tropical diseases during the 27 month study period.

The study included 11 patients with AIDS who underwent gastric emptying studies for solid food, endoscopy (esophagogastroduodenoscopy), and gastric biopsy whenever gastritis was diagnosed on endoscopy. Cause-specific mortality was surveyed among 23,180 male (580,000 person-years) and 3,860 female (86,898 person-years) employees with 1 or more years of service from 1940 through 1989 at a large chemical plant. PURPOSE: To estimate the disease-free survival rate in children with grossly resected hepatoblastoma treated with cisplatin, vincristine, and fluorouracil (CDDP/VCR/FU) and to assess the disease-response rate and disease-free survival (DFS) rate in children with unresectable or metastatic tumors treated with this combination.

Tumors of the liver are rare in infancy and childhood. Some are peculiar to the pediatric age, e.g., hepatoblastoma, infantile hemangioendothelioma, mesenchymal hamartoma, embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma.
