Four silvered leaf monkeys, inoculated with a virus-like infectious agent (VLIA) derived from transformed NIH/3T3 cells (sb51) transfected with Kaposi's sarcoma DNA of an AIDS patient, showed wasting syndromes and died in 7-9 months. A novel murine tumor resistant to cis-diamminedichloroplatinum (cisplatin, DDP) was obtained (M5/DDP) after 22 passages in which mice bearing the ovarian reticular cell sarcoma M5076 (M5) were treated with DDP. Although DDP conserved some inhibitory activity on growth of M5/DDP, it was much less effective than on M5. MyoD is a master regulatory gene for myogenesis. Under the control of a retroviral long terminal repeat, MyoD was expressed in a variety of differentiated cell types by using either a DNA transfection vector or a retrovirus. Expression of muscle-specific proteins was observed in chicken, human, and rat primary fibroblasts and in differentiated melanoma, neuroblastoma, liver, and adipocyte lines. Undifferentiated (embryonal) sarcoma is one of the less common primary malignant tumors of the liver that typically, although not exclusively, presents in later childhood. Elevated activities of cysteine proteinases such as cathepsins B and L and cancer procoagulant have been linked to tumor malignancy. A 53-year-old male Caucasian presented with a massive liver tumor composed entirely of spindle-shaped cells showing light-microscopic and ultrastructural evidence of rhabdomyoblastic differentiation. No epithelial or other sarcomatous elements were included. Detailed postmortem examination failed to reveal evidence of metastatic tumor or an alternative primary site. In preparation for studies using gene transfer, we have identified transcriptional control elements which are active in primary rat hepatocytes. We used plasmids which were constructed so that the promoter or enhancer of interest initiated transcription of the bacterial chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) gene. This paper describes a primary extraskeletal osteogenic sarcoma arising in the spleen of an 11-year-old, male, cross-bred Terrier. Initial diagnosis was made after surgical removal of a splenic mass, at which time the liver and other abdominal viscera appeared grossly normal. A Phase I study using deep regional hyperthermia (HT) with an annular phased array was conducted in 14 U.S. medical centers from 1980 through 1986. There were 353 patients whose average age was 57 years. All patients had advanced recurrent or persistent tumors. Autopsy and liver biopsy specimens from 30 pediatric patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) or AIDS-related complex (ARC) were retrospectively reviewed. The list of conditions associated with nonimmune hydrops fetalis has been steadily increasing. We describe a liveborn neonate with fetal hepatoblastoma presenting as nonimmune hydrops. The hepatic tumor was diagnosed on prenatal ultrasound. The infant survived for 2 days. The pathophysiology of nonimmune hydrops in this case is also described.

Isozyme patterns of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were electrophoretically examined in human cell lines derived from one hepatoblastoma, five hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) and two cholangiocellular carcinomas. In the absence of functional renal tissue on the right side, differentiating between a liver tumor and a renal tumor, both clinically and on routine imaging, is difficult. This clinical dilemma is highlighted here in a case report of a 2 year old girl with hepatoblastoma occurring in association with multicystic kidney.
