Twenty cases of cholangiocarcinoma associated with hepatolithiasis were treated surgically. The incidence of cholangiocarcinoma associated with hepatolithiasis was 2.4%. Surgical procedures included common bile duct exploration after intraoperative choledochofiberoscopy in 20, with hepatic resection in nine. Overall survival was 8 months, with a range of 3-40 months. Fluconazole is a novel antifungal agent, available in oral and intravenous forms, which was developed by Pfizer Central Research. It is characterized by its long serum half-life (approximately 30 hours) to allow once-a-day dosing and favorable safety profile. A multicenter clinical study of fluconazole was conducted at 41 hospital sites in Japan. Fluconazole was administered orally or intravenously at daily doses of 50 to 400 mg to 199 patients with deep-seated mycoses. Clinical efficacy was evaluable in 125 of these patients. The Pitt-UNOS Liver Transplant Registry maintains a computerized database of all orthotopic liver transplantations (OLTX) performed in the United States since October 1, 1987. Recipient data, which are collected at the time of transplantation and at specified follow-up time periods, are reported to the Registry directly, while donor data are transmitted through UNOS Central. X-ray endovascular embolization of hepatic artery (HAE) was carried out in 10 cases of liver cell carcinoma (hepatic cirrhosis included). Immediate beneficial effect was recorded in 8 cases. Remission for 12 months and more was registered in three cirrhosis-free patients; mean survival in five patients was 15 months. In cases of cancer aggravated with cirrhosis, HAE effectiveness proved much lower and survival dropped to average 5.5 months.

A primary liver cell carcinoma was disclosed in 11 cases out of a total of 61 patients with a focal hepatic lesion. The authors investigate the diagnostic significance of abdominal ultrasonography (US) as a major diagnostic modality in early detection of PLC. It is concluded that abdominal US is an important contribution to diagnosis of hepatic lesions smaller than 1 cm in diameter. The echographic features of PLC are often unspecific thus requiring a complementary targetted cytologic examination. A short comparison of US computed tomography and liver scintigraphy is given.

The records of 695 patients with confirmed gastroenterological malignancies over a 10 year period (January 1976-December 1985) were analysed. Of these, 264 patients (37.98%) were below the age of 40 years. Primary liver cell carcinoma was the commonest malignancy while gallbladder and oropharyngeal cancers were the least common. Most of the patients (66.3%) were in their fourth decade. The prognosis was poor as most of the patients presented late.

The distribution of haemoglobin genotype in 200 patients with primary liver cell carcinoma (PLCC) did not show any statistical difference from those of 200 age and sex-matched controls.
