The ability of infantile hypercalcemic tumors (three rhabdoid renal tumors, one cellular mesoblastic nephroma, and one hepatoblastoma) to produce parathyroid hormone (PTH) was tested using RNA-DNA hybridization. Results were compared with those obtained in one lung epidermoid carcinoma and one parathyroid adenoma from adult patients. A retrospective analysis, from 1965 to 1987, of 22 patients less than 18 years of age undergoing thoracotomy for pulmonary metastases from previously diagnosed malignancy, was performed. There were 15 males and seven females whose ages ranged from 8 months to 17, years. Ten patients had primary osteogenic sarcoma, five had Wilms' tumor, and seven had miscellaneous other tumors. This report presents results of studies using the spectral-shift zero-crossing method to measure frequency-dependent attenuation (FDA) in normal liver and spleen and in diseased liver. We developed a new system for attenuation analysis that calculated FDA in dB/cm/MHz according to the following equation: (formula: see text). Developments in the treatment of childhood cancer have been evaluated in patients who had been treated in the National Children's Hospital from 1965 to 1987. The total number of patients was 867, of which leukemia accounted for 376, malignant lymphoma 61, neuroblastoma 174, Wilms' tumor 55, yolk sac tumor 29, rhabdomyosarcoma 36 and hepatoblastoma 30. Eleven children have been identified as having hepatoblastoma and a family history of adenomatous polyposis, and 14 additional instances of this association have been collected from the literature.
