Enough amounts of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) in mice serum for the therapy were observed by treatment with 100 units of recombinant human TNF-alpha (rHuTNF-alpha) followed by administration of OK-432 (a streptococcal preparation). Optimal time interval between rTNF and OK-432 to produce endogenous TNF was 3 h, and priming activity of rTNF persisted for at least 10 h. Hepatoblastoma is a rare neoplasm of infants and children only recently documented in association with hereditary adenomatous polyposis of the colon [Kingston et al., 1983]. However, there is controversy regarding the possible relation of focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver to oral contraceptive therapy. Twenty-seven patients with spontaneous rupture of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) underwent surgical treatment during the past ten years. The indications for emergent laparotomy were hemoperitoneum in 14 and unspecified peritonitis in 13. Twelve were found to have noncirrhotic HCC. A detailed morphological study concerning the liver of 71 patients suffering from idiopathic haemochromatosis was carried out. These patients were subjected to long-term venesection therapy, which lasted from 1 to 12 years. The mean duration of therapy was 7 years for each patient. Cryosurgical treatment was applied to normal liver tissue of 13 clinically intact rats, with a view to investigating effects of freezing temperatures upon normal liver tissue. The animals were sacrificed after different intervals from surgery, and their liver tissue was macroscopically and histologically examined. Major postoperative complications were not observed but for one animal which died of wound healing disorder. The method seems to be suitable also for treatment of liver cell carcinoma or liver metastases.

A 62-year-old woman with cirrhosis of the liver was suspected of also having a primary liver-cell carcinoma. After puncture of a circumscribed liver process with a biopsy fine-needle there occurred massive bleeding which could not be surgically stopped, and the patient died. This was the first fatal outcome among 2760 fine-needle punctures in the author's personal series (0.036%).
