After long-term feeding of a choline-devoid diet to rats, the authors analyzed rasK, rasH, and rasN transcripts and gene structure in livers and liver tumors. They controlled their analysis by studying cell lines derived from chemically induced hepatomas. To study the alternative splicing of fibronectin during embryogenesis and oncogenic transformation, we isolated cDNA clones of chicken fibronectin. The partial amino acid sequence deduced from sequencing of these clones showed that, overall, chicken fibronectin is approximately 80% identical with mammalian fibronectins. The case of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with foci of hepatoblastoma in a 7-year-old boy, the son of a hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) carrier mother, is described. Twelve other malignant liver tumors in children were tumors in children were also reviewed for HBsAg and hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAg). Both were negative in all (nine) hepatoblastomas. One of three HCC demonstrated positivity for HBsAg. These cases illustrate the importance of hepatitis B virus infection in early childhood and stress the need for careful screening in pregnant women, irrespective of ethnic backgrounds.

About 5% of Mendelian mutations displaying neoplastic tendencies are associated with chromosomal aberrations. The best established examples are retinoblastoma and del(13)(q14) and aniridia-Wilms' tumor and del(11)(p13). A retrospective study of biopsies taken at three hospitals in Southern Ethiopia has been carried out to describe the cancer pattern in the Sidamo and Gamu Gofa regions. A histologically verified cancer diagnosis was recorded in 1154 patients. The bias that appear in the data are discussed. This includes aspects of hospital coverage, age and sex distribution and bias that arise from a lack of diagnostic facilities, especially to diagnose deep seated tumours. A 2 9/12-year-old girl with trisomy 18 presented with a 3-week history of low grade fever, abdominal distention, and hepatosplenomegaly. Abdominal cytotomography (CT) scan showed hepatic infiltration with a tumor mass presumed to be hepatoblastoma. She deteriorated rapidly and died 3 weeks later. Results from transabdominal fine-needle aspiration of the spleen in 28 dogs and 5 cats are reported. Splenomegaly was present in 79% of these patients, and splenic masses were present in 15%. We observed hepatoblastoma in four unrelated children who have a family history of polyposis coli and found this association in ten other kindreds in the literature. The one child in our series who has survived hepatoblastoma showed multiple colonic adenomas at 7 years of age. She and eight affected maternal relatives also had congenital hypertrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium, a new marker of gene carriers in some polyposis coli families. These findings suggest that childhood hepatoblastoma is an associated feature of familial polyposis coli.

The observation of constitutional chromosome abnormalities in a one and half year old boy with Wiedemann-Beckwith syndrome (WBS) and hepatoblastoma prompted us to review the currently available literature dealing with this subject. In approximately 500 published cases with complete and incomplete forms of WBS, 42 malignant and 9 benign neoplasms have been described. Twenty-five patients with an apparently primary sarcoma of the liver are reviewed. Presenting complaints were non-specific, but hepatomegaly and abnormal liver function tests were usual. We report the case of a 56-year old male patient with pulmonary, abdominal and pelvic metastases from a dermatofibrosarcoma (DFS) which had developed 23 years previously in the right scapulo-humeral region and had recurred twice after the first excision, in 1983. Surgery was only performed once. The most remarkable feature of the disease was the progressive transformation, with each recurrence, of a typical DFS into a poorly differentiated and highly malignant tumour, about as active as a fibrosarcoma. From 1972 to 1985, 40 cases of congenital dilatation of the bile duct (CDBD) were experienced in the department of the authors. Two cases of adenosquamous carcinoma of the liver are presented. In one case, the carcinoma probably arose in the left hepatic duct, whereas in the other, it probably developed from a liver cyst. Only 10 other such tumors have been reported in the literature. Analysis of these cases indicates that the prognosis etiology of adenosquamous carcinoma may be similar to that of intrahepatic bile duct carcinoma. The prognosis for this tumor is very poor.
