Epirubicin (4'-epidoxorubicin) is an antineoplastic agent derived from doxorubicin. The compounds differ in the configuration of the hydroxyl group at the 4' position. Epirubicin, like doxorubicin, exerts its antitumor effects by interference with the synthesis and function of DNA and is most active during the S phase of the cell cycle. Despite discontinuation of its use in the 1950s, the consequences of Thorotrast usage continue to be recognized. In a review of plain film and CT findings of 20 cases of Thorotrast exposure, 15 of 17 patients demonstrated Thorotrast accumulation in the liver and spleen on plain films. A literature review shows that porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT), and possibly acute intermittent porphyria also, tend to occur more often than expected among cases of primary liver cancer, especially when cirrhosis is present. The ability of conventional virus receptors to mediate infection and transformation of immature B cells by the avian leukosis virus (ALV) was analyzed in chimeric chickens whose bursa of Fabricius contained a mixture of B cells from subgroup A virus receptor-positive and -negative chickens. The data indicate that factors that determine resistance of fibroblasts to ALV infection also apply to bursal cells and that other receptors expressed by B cells, i.e., antigen or mitogen receptors, do not initiate infection or transformation, at least not independent of conventional virus receptors.

The pathology of 60 aged female SENCAR mice used as acetone controls in skin painting studies was studied. Fifty percent of the mice survived past 96 weeks of age. The major contributing causes of death identified in 42 mice were glomerulonephritis (8 mice), histiocytic sarcoma (7 mice), and other tumors (8 mice). Upon incubation with rat liver membranes, radioiodinated rat intermediate density lipoproteins (IDL) interacted with at least two binding sites having a low and a high affinity as demonstrated by the curvilinear Scatchard plots obtained from the specific binding data. Eleven patients with carcinoma of the pancreas or biliary system received heavy charged particle radiation treatments and whole liver heavy charged particle radiation at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. Differences in the mRNA species were observed when cDNA complementary to HnRNA from normal liver was hybridized with mRNA from hepatocellular carcinoma induced by aflatoxin B1. The hybridizations between cDNA complementary to HnRNA from liver cell carcinoma and HnRNA from normal liver indicate that there is homology between their sequences. The findings in this paper suggest that mRNA species normally restricted to the cell nucleus are present in the cytoplasm of liver carcinoma cells.

Two human primary liver cancer cell-lines, PLC/PRF/5 and Hep 3B, grown both in vitro and as xenografts in nude mice were used to evaluate the chemotherapeutic potential of a new quinazoline antifolate CB3717. A 10 kb genomic DNA fragment derived from a human primary liver cell carcinoma (PLC) and containing integrated hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA was cloned and analysed. Intraoperative ultrasonography was used in 37 patients during surgery for suspected liver tumors. The size, number, and site of the lesions were determined together with the relationship of the tumor to the intrahepatic vessel, as well as possible small daughter lesions within the liver. A 70 year old man complaining of abdominal pain was admitted to our hospital and was suspected to have a gastric cancer with perforation by barium meal X-ray and by endoscopy.
