Many types of tumors, benign and malignant, primary and metastatic, can occur in the liver. Diagnostic criteria for two relatively common and two uncommon primary malignant liver tumors are presented. Hepatocellular carcinoma, the most common primary malignant hepatic tumor, is recognized when the tumor cells show features of liver cell differentiation, such as a trabecular growth pattern, intercellular bile canaliculi, eosinophilic granular cytoplasm, bile production or other hepatic synthetic products. The authors describe a case of von Hippel-Lindau syndrome diagnosed at autopsy in a 49-year-old woman. She died suddenly following hemorrhage from a cerebellar hemangioblastoma. Other autopsy findings included a retinal hemangioblastoma, an adrenal pheochromocytoma, and a clear-cell renal tumor. The case was distinguished by the unexpected finding of multiple microscopic hemangioblastomas of the spinal nerve roots. The case is discussed with emphasis on the incidence of spinal hemangioblastomas in von Hippel-Lindau syndrome.

A monoclonal antibody (alpha HC1) raised against HCL cells reacted specifically with HCL cells and not with other normal or leukemic B cell types. It also reacted with BC and with vascular EC. Soluble suppressor factors in the sera of cancer patients inhibit lectin-stimulated lymphocyte proliferation. These factors, derived from human material, preclude easy corroboration by other investigators. We have used alkaline elution to study the repair of X-ray-induced DNA strand breaks in vivo in two fibrosarcoma tumors and in several normal mouse tissues after whole-body irradiation of mice with 10-12.5 Gy of X rays. A tumour line inoculated in mice showed high affinity binding for lipoproteins in vitro. Studies in vivo demonstrated that the assimilation of human low density lipoprotein (LDL) by the tumour was very high. Both receptor and non-receptor mediated catabolism of the lipoprotein by the tumour increased as compared to other tissues known to be sites of lipoprotein catabolism (liver, spleen etc.). These findings suggest that lipoproteins may be useful markers for tumours as well as carriers for cytotoxic drugs to target tissues in vivo.
