The antitumor antibiotic sporamycin is composed of polypeptide and non-chromophore subunits and shows remarkable antitumor activity against various animal tumors. In the present study we have used the alkaline elution technique to study the effect of misonidazole (MISO) on the initial amount of DNA cross-linking in various normal and neoplastic tissues of C3H mice treated with nitrogen mustard (HN2) in vivo. Four cases of spontaneous malignant mastocytoma were found in some 20 000 mice. Only liver and spleen were involved in one case, but there was widespread dissemination in the three other animals. Involvement of peripheral blood was detected in only one mouse. In all cases the neoplastic cells were well differentiated, with abundant metachromatic granules.

An extremely rare case of malignant mixed tumor of the liver in adults is reported. A 60-year-old man was admitted because of abdominal fullness. Abdominal CT-scan demonstrated a low density lesion surrounded by high density ring area in the liver. Liver scintigram and selective hepatic angiography revealed a malignant tumor mass which was indistinguishable from other malignant masses. We examined the enhancing effect of antitumor activity by co-administration of 5-FU or its masked form (FT-207) with bases or nucleosides of purine and pyrimidine. It was found that the antitumor activity of 5-FU or FT-207 on sarcoma-180 and AH-130 tumor was oral administration of uracil, deoxyuridine, uridine, thymine or thymidine. Nine patients with metastatic breast cancer were treated with a minimum of 6 X 10(6) U/day of beta-interferon (IFN-beta) for at least 6 weeks. In patients whose disease did not progress during this period treatment was continued to a maximum of 13 weeks, while in other patients doses were escalated. With daily treatments over 3 weeks the maximum tolerated dose was found to be around 60 X 10(6) U/day. Fever occurred regularly. A Phase I trial of intravenous bromodeoxyuridine (BUdR) and conventional fractionated radiation therapy was performed in 14 patients with glioblastoma multiforme and 7 patients with other poorly radioresponsive tumors. Some environmental factors of possible aetiological importance for primary liver carcinoma (PLC) in males were analysed in a case-control study including 83 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), 15 cases of intrahepatic cholangiocellular carcinoma (CC), 3 cases of haemangiosarcoma and 1 case of unspecified sarcoma in the liver--102 cases in total. The clinical significance of serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) was studied in 114 patients with liver cirrhosis, who were followed for more than one year. Sera of ten patients with HBsAg-positive primary liver carcinoma were tested for anti-HBc-IgM and HBV-DNA. Five patients were positive for anti-HBc-IgM and six for HBV-DNA. There was no correlation between the presence of anti-HBc-IgM and HBV-DNA. Our study suggests that complete viral replication exists in some HBsAg-positive primary liver carcinomas.
