Three enolase isozymes (alpha alpha, alpha gamma, and gamma gamma) and S-100 protein in the extract of neuroendocrine tumors (neuroblastoma, ganglioneuroblastoma, ganglioneuroma, and pheochromocytoma) and nonneuroendocrine tumors (Wilms' tumor, rhabdomyosarcoma, and hepatoblastoma) were determined by means of enzyme immunoassay systems. All of the tumors examined showed a high level of alpha alpha-enolase (1.71 to 19.0 micrograms/mg protein). We have identified five children with hepatoblastoma who have a family history of polyposis coli affecting the mother and maternal relatives. We believe that the familial association of these two conditions is unlikely to have occurred by chance. Macroscopic morphology, histology and ultrastructure of BK virus (BKV)-induced hamster and mouse tumors were investigated. Groups of animals were immunosuppressed to study the relationship between immune system and BKV oncogenesis. Data on 93 autopsy cases (group A) of thorotrast-associated liver cancers were obtained from the "Annual of Pathological Autopsy Cases in Japan" from 1958 to 1979, and data on 78 autopsy cases (group B) of thorotrast-associated liver cancers were obtained from the Japanese literature from 1953 to 1980. Surgical removal of a primary tumor implant established in a hind limb frequently gives rise to the emergence of macroscopic lymph node metastases. The incidence of hepatic metastases for a variety of spontaneous and carcinogen-induced malignant neoplasms was studied in several strains of mice. Forty percent of osteogenic sarcomas metastasized to the liver in C57BL/6 female mice. Fourteen percent of mesotheliomas metastasized to the liver in C3H mice and 11.5% of alveolar/bronchiolar carcinomas metastasized to the liver in BALB/c male mice. All other malignant neoplasms metastasized to the liver at a rate of less than 10% and most at less than 5%.

The German Thorotrast Study includes 5159 Thorotrast patients and 5160 control patients. 887 Thorotrast patients and 660 control patients could be clinically and biophysically examined and followed-up. The mean age at injection or hospitalization in the case of the control group was 28 yr. Primary malignant tumors of the small intestine are uncommon. The average annual incidence rate over a period of 30 years in Saskatchewan was 0.7 and 0.6 per 100,000 for male and females, respectively. The 209 patients who comprise the series represent 1.6% of the total number who had gastrointestinal cancers over the same period. Oxygen consumption has been measured in sarcoma-bearing mice, liver cells and tumour tissue. The aim was to determine whether oxidative metabolism in tumour-host livers contributes to the negative energy balance in non-growing animals with a tumour due to insufficient hepatic adaptation of energy consumption.
