During autopsy a hepatoblastoma was found in a 73-year-old woman. The tumor contained fetal hepatocytes as an epithelial component and spindle-shaped cells resembling fibroblast as well as focal osteoid tissue representing mesenchymal components. Hepatoblastoma are predominantly found in children and are very rare in adults. Hepatoblastoma probably arise from multipotent blastema which can develop into epithelial and mesenchymal tissue.

Incidence of myeloid leukemia was studied in 79 mice injected i.v. with 180 kBq 239Pu/kg. Plutonium-treated mice were compared with 70 controls of the same origin and sex (random-bred ICR-SPF female mice). The animals were killed moribund and the disease was diagnosed on the basis of histological and cytologic examination of bone marrow, spleen, liver, peripheral blood, and other tissues. It has been found that 22 plutonium-treated mice (27.8%) and 17 controls (24.3%) were leukemic. Millipore 'discs' impregnated with methylcholanthrene dissolved in wax or in crystalline form implanted subcutaneously in mice evoke an early intense macrophage and giant cell reaction; later the discs become covered with connective tissue, and eventually fibrosarcomas develop in their vicinity. Leiomyosarcoma appears to have less aggressive biologic behavior than other types of breast sarcomas. In spite of recent reports of more aggressive investigation and treatment of malignant liver tumors in infants and children, there is still an alarming morbidity and mortality in the operative aspect of this tumor. Transplantation of Yoshida sarcoma (solid type) and Zajdela ascites hepatoma tumors in rats induces a biphasic change in the concentration of the following five acute-phase proteins: alpha-1-acid glycoprotein; alpha-1-antitrypsin; haptoglobin; hemopexin; and ceruloplasmin.
