The effect of chalone-containing ethanol extract of rat skin (CCE) on the growth in mice of transplanted uterine cervix and skin carcinomas, hepatoma-22a, sarcoma-180 and leukemia L-1210 was studied. When CCE is added to the suspension of tumour cells (10 mg CCE/100 mg tumour tissue/ml saline) the most obvious retention of tumour growth is observed on squamous-cell carcinoma of uterine cervix (72.6%; p less than 0.01). Carcinomas of the liver were readily induced in male and female mice given organochlorine pesticides orally. The carcinomas were predominantly hepatocellular, with a few being cholangiocellular, and varied from well differentiated to poorly differentiated to undifferentiated. They are capable of invading, metastasizing, and killing the mice. Hemangiosarcomas, leimyosarcomas, and reticulum cell sarcomas were also occasionally seen in mice receiving these chemicals. Hepatic vein thrombosis and hepatic necrosis was observed in some mice.

Both peptide elongation factors were purified from Zajdela and Walker tumors and from the host and normal liver. A physical explanation is given for the finding that the spin-lattice relaxation time T1, obtained by nuclear magnetic resonance from equivalent malignant and non-malignant samples, is greater for the phosphorus isotype 31P than for the proton 1H. The nuclear relaxation of the phosphorus proceeds by way of its interaction with associated cell water. Within limits determined by other variables, T1 is expected to vary inversely as the square of the gyromagnetic ratio.

A bioassay of 1H-benzotriazole for possible carcinogenicity was conducted by administering the test chemical in feed to Fischer 344 rats and B6C3F1 mice. Groups of 50 rats of each sex were administered 1H-benzotriazole at one of two time-weighted average doses, either 6,700 or 12,100 ppm, for 78 weeks. Except for five control and five high-dose rats of each sex, which were killed at week 78, all animals surviving at that time were observed for 26-27 additional weeks. A bioassay of 2-methyl-1-nitroanthraquinone for possible carcinogenicity was conducted using Fischer 344 rats. 2-Methyl-1-nitroanthraquinone was administered in the feed at either of two concentrations to groups of 50 male and 50 female animals. Lasiocarpine, a pyrrolizidine alkaloid, was fed at a dietary concentration of 50/10(6) for 55 weeks, to 20 male F-344 rats. Malignant tumours developed in 17/20 animals between 48 and 59 weeks. Forty-five percent (9/20) developed angiosarcomas of the liver and 35% (7/20) had hepatocellular carcinomas. Other tumours included malignant adnexas tumour of the skin (1 rat) and lympohoma (1 rat). Lung metastases were observed in 4 animals with angiosarcoma of the liver and one animal with hepatocellular carcinoma. From one animal, angiosarcoma was successfully transplanted through 4 generations.

This paper describes the effect of Tween 80 on the antitumor activity and on the distribution of adriamycin in mice. Therapeutic irradiation produces alterations in normal tissue which, when visible on diagnostic x-ray examinations, may be confused with recurrent tumor or other unrelated conditions. Therapeutic irradiation of breast carcinoma may produce gross effects in the lungs, bone, breast, heart and great vessels, esophagus, liver, and spinal cord. The radiographic appearance of such changes is presented and contrasted with changes secondary to the malignancy itself or benign inflammatory processes. Recognition is imperative for proper management.

Masses were present in the mesentery, abdominal hollow viscera, liver, and retroperitoneal areas. In order to assess the role played respectively by the pseudothiourea group and the alkylic chain in the inhibition of protein synthesis and tumour growth caused by compound AHR-1911, a series of eight related substances were studied.
