A new thiopseudourea, S-(10-undecen-1-yl)isothiouronium iodide (compound AHR-1911), was tested for antitumour action and shown to inhibit considerably the growth of the Walker carcinoma in rats. The mechanism of its effect on protein and nucleic acid synthesis was then studied with systems in vitro from rat liver. Two patients with primary gastric carcinoma and multiple liver secondaries who developed alpha fetoprotein in the serum are reported. Both had clinical features which were initially suggestive of primary liver cell carcinoma. Fetoprotein levels fell after ligation of the hepatic artery in one patient. Alpha fetoprotein may occur in the serum of adult patients with tumours of the foregut, other than primary liver cell carcinoma, when such tumours have metastasized to the liver.

A new technique of hepatic lobectomy with combined use of hepatic clamp and liver crush clamp is described. It is a simplification of the original finger fracture technique by using instruments instead of fingers for hepatic resection. It provides the unexperienced with a technique of hepatic resection done in the shortest possible time and in an almost bloodless field with safety. Normal and tumour tissues from rats, blood from normal and tumour bearing rats, and normal human blood were examined using the electron paramagnetic resonance (epr) technique. At low temperature a triplet epr signal, which is known to be produced by a NO-haemoprotein complex, was detected in some tumour samples and in decaying normal liver.
