UBE2A as a prognostic indicator across human cancers: Insights from multi‑omics and immune landscape analyses.

PURPOSE: Suture placement and alkali burn to the cornea are often used to induce inflammatory corneal neovascularization (CorNV) models in animals. This study compares the changes in genome-wide gene expression under these two CorNV conditions in mice. METHODS: CorNV were induced in Balb/c mice by three interrupted 10-0 sutures placed at sites about 1 mm from the corneal apex, or by alkali burns that were 2 mm in size in the central area of the cornea. At the points in time when neovascularization progressed most quickly, some eyeballs were subjected to histological staining to examine CorNV

Characteristics of patients hospitalized for diabetic foot in a national hospital in Peru, 2024.

INTRODUCTION: Expansive processes around the third ventricle have always been a major neurosurgical challenge. Despite all the technological and scientific progress recorded over the last few years, third ventricle tumors are still a very difficult pathology to approach due to their formidable complexity.Treating such a tumor demands a good knowledge of local anatomy, pathophysiology, pathology and a good capacity to integrate all the data gathered from the patient prior to and during surgery. Last but not least, the correct means to approach such a tumor involves using modern neuronavigation

Does ruminating about the previous night's drinking during a hangover predict changes in heavy episodic drinking? A two-wave, 30-day prospective study.

OBJECTIVE: We examined whether hangover-related rumination-repeatedly dwelling on negative aspects of yesterday's drinking while hungover the following morning-predicts changes in three dimensions of heavy episodic drinking (HED) over time. METHOD: N = 334 emerging adults (aged 19-29) from three Eastern Canadian universities who had recently experienced a hangover completed online self-report questionnaires at baseline (Wave 1) and 30 days later (Wave 2; 71.6% retention). HED was assessed in frequency (number of HED episodes), perceptions (how participants perceived the extent of their heavy

Comparison of Prehospital Versus Arrival Glasgow Coma Scale Scores Among Trauma Patients: A Retrospective Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) is a valuable tool that has long been used to help identify critically ill trauma patients in the prehospital setting. A discrepancy was observed by emergency medicine staff in prehospital GCS (pGCS) versus arrival GCS (aGCS). This observed discrepancy in GCS has important implications in the proper triage of trauma patients, including the appropriate level of activation, resource utilization, and cost. STUDY OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine the level of agreement between pGCS and aGCS among trauma patients, determine the effect of al

Encephalomalacia from Physical Trauma in an Adult: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

INTRODUCTION: Encephalomalacia is the loss of brain tissue caused by an insult to the cerebral matter. Encephalomalacia is not frequently described in literature, with most focusing on infants and children, and rarely on the adult population. When described in the adult population, encephalomalacia is most commonly described following a cerebrovascular event. Reports of trauma-induced encephalomalacia in adults are uncommon, making such cases clinically significant. Despite some identified etiology in infants and children, our understanding of adult risk factors besides a cerebrovascular event

Water-related fatalities in Salzburg and Upper Austria between 2015 and 2022 - a retrospective evaluation with a focus on the informative value of drowning signs.

Drowning remains a major public health problem reportedly accounting for more than 4.000 annual deaths in the European Union. Factors influencing water-related fatalities are extending from intoxication through alcohol, pharmaceuticals and narcotic drugs to person-related medical conditions and the geography of the drowning environment. Consequently, cases suspected of drowning present a high variability in age, sex, seasonality, type of drowning, recovery site and state of body preservation by the time of recovery. All these factors affect the manifestation of drowning signs, which are invest

Covariation of daily stressors and alcohol use among adults aged 50+ years: differences across stressor characteristics and individual factors.

BACKGROUND: Several theoretical frameworks suggest connections between stress and alcohol use. However, limited existing literature has focused on older adults, and associations may vary across stressor and individual characteristics. PURPOSE: The current study extends the stress-drinking literature by assessing the same-day covariation of daily stressors and alcohol use among a national sample of adults aged 50+ years. METHODS: Participants (N = 1,035; Mage=61.62 years; range = 50-83) were non-abstaining adults who participated in an 8-day daily diary project in the National Study of Daily

Alcohol use, prohibition policies, and bidirectional intimate partner violence in India.

INTRODUCTION: This study examines associations between husbands' alcohol use and bidirectional intimate partner violence (IPV)-defined as both IPV victimization and perpetration-among married individuals in India. We also assess the impact of a state-level alcohol ban on IPV outcomes. METHODS: We used data from rounds 4 (2015-16) and 5 (2019-21) of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) to conduct two analyses. First, multivariable multinomial regression models estimated the association between husbands' alcohol use-categorized as frequent intoxication, occasional intoxication, alcohol use

Evaluation and Management of Alcohol-Intoxicated Patients With Suicide Risk in the Emergency Department: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: The severity of suicide risk in patients who present to the emergency department (ED) with co-occurring complaints of suicidal ideation and alcohol intoxication is neither well-understood nor well-recognized by ED staff. While suicide screening has become a standard expectation in ED care, there lacks consensus on standard care practices for the evaluation and management of patients with suicidal ideation and/or attempt and alcohol intoxication. OBJECTIVE: To conduct a scoping review of the care of ED patients with suicidality and alcohol intoxication. METHODS: This is a scoping

FRUCTOSE ACTIVATES A STRESS RESPONSE SHARED BY METHYLGLYOXAL AND HYDROGEN PEROXIDE IN STREPTOCOCCUS MUTANS.

Fructose catabolism by Streptococcus mutans is initiated by three PTS transporters yielding either fructose-1-phoshate (F-1-P) or fructose-6-phosphate (F-6-P). Deletion of one such F-1-P-generating PTS, fruI, has been shown to reduce the cariogenicity of S. mutans in rats fed a high-sucrose diet. Moreover, a recent study linked fructose metabolism in S. mutans to a reactive electrophile species (RES) methylglyoxal. Here, we conducted a comparative transcriptomic analysis of exponentially grown S. mutans shocked with 50 mM fructose, 50 mM glucose, 5 mM methylglyoxal, or 0.5 mM hydrogen peroxide

[Alcohol and trauma : Retrospective analysis of traumatological emergency room patients and alcohol consumption at a university tertiary care hospital].

BACKGROUND: A well-established causal relationship exists between alcohol consumption in a population and the frequency of accidents. Since 1975 the German Federal Statistical Office has systematically recorded data on traffic accidents involving personal injuries as reported by the police: however, these data are likely to underestimate the true burden due to incomplete testing of blood ethanol levels among the individuals involved. Emergency department-based studies provide a more accurate framework for investigating alcohol-related accidents and injuries. This study aimed to assess the prev
