Hydrogen intake relieves alcohol consumption and hangover symptoms in healthy adults: a randomized and placebo-controlled crossover study.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-induced hangover represents a significant, yet understudied, global hazard and a large socioeconomic burden. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of hydrogen on relieving drinking and hangover symptoms in 20 healthy volunteers. METHODS: In this pilot, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, matched, crossover interventional trial, participants were matched into pairs and randomly assigned. Study group 1 inhaled placebo air for 1 h, followed by drinking 100 mL liquor (40% alcohol) within 10 min, and then pure water. Study group 2 inhaled

Negative but Not Positive Alcohol-Related Consequences Tend to Occur Above the Heavy Episodic Drinking Threshold: A Daily Study of Young Adult Heavy Drinkers.

AIMS: This study used event-level data to identify the threshold (i.e. number of standard alcoholic drinks) at which specific negative and positive alcohol-related consequences are likely to occur. METHODS: Ninety-six college students aged 18-20 reporting weekly heavy episodic drinking (HED) or at least one negative alcohol-related consequence in the past 2 weeks completed ecological momentary assessment over 28 days. Participants reported number of standard drinks consumed and negative (e.g. nausea) and positive (e.g. new friend) alcohol-related consequences on 492 drinking nights. The area

Preclinical and clinical evidence for suppression of alcohol intake by apremilast.

Treatment options for alcohol use disorders (AUDs) have minimally advanced since 2004, while the annual deaths and economic toll have increased alarmingly. Phosphodiesterase type 4 (PDE4) is associated with alcohol and nicotine dependence. PDE4 inhibitors were identified as a potential AUD treatment using a bioinformatics approach. We prioritized a newer PDE4 inhibitor, apremilast, as ideal for repurposing (i.e., FDA approved for psoriasis, low incidence of adverse events, excellent safety profile) and tested it using multiple animal strains and models, as well as in a human phase IIa study. Noni fruit extract ameliorates alcohol-induced hangover symptoms by reducing the concentrations of alcohol and acetaldehyde in a Sprague Dawley rat model and a human intervention study.

Various studies have reported that Noni shows various health effects. This study aimed to assess the ability of Noni fruit extract to serve as a single active functional ingredient for the alleviation of hangover symptoms in Sprague Dawley rats and healthy subjects in a single-dose, randomized, double-blind, crossover, placebo-controlled study. The rats were orally administered Noni fruit extract at 50 or 100 mg per kg body weight (B.W.) and HOVENIA. The blood ethanol (EtOH) and acetaldehyde concentrations were significantly lower in the 100 mg per kg B.W. group than in the EtOH group. Alcohol

Frequency and Outcomes of Cervical Spine Computed Tomography Imaging on Alcohol-Intoxicated Patients in the Emergency Department.

BACKGROUND: Cervical spinal (c-spine) injuries range greatly in severity from minor ligamentous injuries to osteoligamentous instability with spinal cord injuries. Initial evaluation begins with stabilization as needed and immediate immobilization. Current practice as to whether the c-spine can be cleared clinically without radiographic evaluation is often guided by using the National Emergency X-Radiography Utilization Study Low-Risk Criteria and the Canadian C-Spine Rule. Under these clinical decision guidelines, stable trauma patients presenting with alcohol intoxication cannot have the c-s

Time course study of optical coherence tomography angiography in patients with methanol induced optic neuropathy.

INTRODUCTION: In countries where alcoholic beverages are legally prohibited, methanol toxicity usually occurs due to ingesting homemade alcoholic drinks. The initial ophthalmologic symptoms of methanol toxicity typically appear 6-48 h after ingestion, and the severity of symptoms varies widely from mild and painless decreased vision to no-light perception vision. METHODS: This prospective study examines 20 patients with acute methanol poisoning within 10 days of use. Patients underwent ocular examinations, BCVA (Best Corrected Visual Acuity) recording, and OCTA (Optical Coherence Tomography A

Acute Ethanol Intoxication: Αn Overlooked Cause of High Anion Gap Metabolic Acidosis With a Marked Increase in Serum Osmolal Gap.

Measurement of serum osmolal gap is a useful tool in suspected toxic alcohol ingestion. Normal levels of osmolal gap are typically <10 mOsm/kg). Osmolal gap >20 mOsm/kg is usually caused by ingestion of methanol, ethylene glycol, isopropanol, propylene glycol, diethylene glycol, or organic solvents such as acetone but rarely of ethanol alone. Herein, we describe the case of a severe ethanol intoxication presenting with a marked increase in the osmolal gap. An 18-year-old male was referred to the emergency department of our hospital, in a comatose state, following binge drinking. blood gas anal

Examining the validity of the addictions neuroclinical assessment domains in a crowdsourced sample of adults with current alcohol use.

Several dimensional frameworks for characterizing heterogeneity in alcohol use disorder (AUD) have been proposed, including the Addictions Neuroclinical Assessment (ANA). The ANA is a framework for assessing individual variability within AUD across three domains corresponding to the proposed stages of the addiction cycle: reward (binge-intoxication stage), negative emotionality (withdrawal-negative affect stage), and cognitive control (preoccupation-anticipation stage). Recent work has evaluated the ANA's three-factor structure and construct validity, primarily in treatment-seekers with AUD. W

Predictors of Hangover Frequency and Severity: The Impact of Alcohol Consumption, Mental Resilience, Personality, Lifestyle, Coping and Mood.

Mental resilience is the ability to bounce back from daily life stressors such as divorce or losing a job. Extensive research has demonstrated a negative relationship between mental resilience and alcohol consumption. That is, both the quantity and frequency of alcohol consumption are greater in individuals with lower levels of mental resilience. There has, however, been little scientific attention paid to the relationship between mental resilience and alcohol hangover severity. The objective of this study was to evaluate psychological factors that may impact the frequency and severity of alco

An evening of alcohol consumption negatively impacts next-day immune fitness in both hangover-sensitive drinkers and hangover-resistant drinkers.

BACKGROUND: Survey research found poorer baseline immune fitness for self-reported hangover-sensitive drinkers compared to hangover-resistant drinkers. However, up to now a limited number of clinical studies revealed mixed results regarding the relationship between the concentrations of biomarkers of systemic inflammation in blood or saliva with hangover severity, and could not differentiate between hangover-sensitive drinkers and hangover-resistant drinkers. The aim of this study was to assess immune fitness and saliva biomarkers of systemic inflammation at multiple timepoints following an al

Who benefits from brief motivational intervention among young adults presenting to the emergency department with alcohol intoxication: A latent-class moderation analysis.

BACKGROUND: Research has not identified which patients optimally benefit from brief Motivational Interviewing (bMI) for heavy drinking when delivered to young adults in the Emergency Department (ED). METHODS: We conducted secondary analyses of data from a randomized controlled trial in which 344 young adults (18-35 years) presenting to the ED with alcohol intoxication received either bMI or Brief Advice (BA, control group). We used Latent Class Analysis to derive participants' profiles from baseline characteristics (i.e., sex, age, severity of alcohol use disorder, attribution of ED admission

Quantitative determination of alcohols in human biological fluids through Raman spectroscopy: An alternative alcohol test.

The severe effects of alcohols on humans trigger the continuous research on the alcohols level measurement in biological fluids. The officially established technique is Headspace Gas Chromatography (HS-GC), while breathalyzers are commonly used by police on the road. However, they all exhibit drawbacks; HS-GC is expensive and labor-intensive, while the precision of breathalyzers is controversial. In the present study, a novel method was developed, for ethanol and methanol detection and quantification in human urine, saliva and blood serum, based on Raman spectroscopy. Biological fluids from he

Have Incidence and Severity of Craniomaxillofacial Fractures Changed Since SARS-CoV-2?

BACKGROUND: An increase in severity and a decrease in incidence of craniomaxillofacial fractures (CMFs) were identified during the first several months of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. It is unclear if these changes have persisted in the current timeframe. PURPOSE: The investigators hypothesize that the incidence and severity of CMF will not return to baseline prepandemic (control) levels as the pandemic stabilizes and becomes endemic. STUDY DESIGN, SETTING, SAMPLE: This retrospective cohort study enrolled subjects who presented to Harborview Medical Center a Level 1 trauma center for the evaluat

The relationship between discrimination, alcohol use severity, and PTSD symptoms among Latinx heavy drinkers.

INTRODUCTION: Discrimination is linked to alcohol use severity among Latinx adults, who also show high prevalence rates of PTSD compared to non-Latinx adults. We know little about whether PTSD symptoms affects the relationship between discrimination and alcohol use severity. We hypothesized that the association between discrimination and alcohol use severity might differ by level of PTSD symptom severity. METHODS: This is a secondary cross-sectional analysis of data collected at baseline from a completed randomized clinical trial testing the relative efficacy of a culturally adapted motivatio

Discrimination and social identity processes predict impairment and dysfunction among heavy drinkers.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has linked discrimination to poorer health. Yet health risk behaviours such as heavy alcohol consumption are often targeted with stigmatising public health campaigns. The current study sought to establish the link between experiencing discrimination and health outcomes among heavy drinkers, with a focus on exploring the multiple social identity processes that might underpin this relationship. METHODS: A survey was conducted with 282 people who self-reported consuming alcohol above recommended guidelines. We measured discrimination experienced as a drinker, compon
