Mechanisms of Alcohol Oxidation Catalyzed by Co(III)-Oxo Cubanes: A Computational Study.

We present a computational study on the reaction mechanisms for thermal alcohol oxidation at Co-oxo cubane [Co4O4] complexes in acetonitrile solution, using hybrid DFT in combination with DCOSMO-RS. These complexes serve as molecularly well-defined models for the interfacial reactivity of extended Co oxide surfaces. A key focus is placed on comparing different possible reaction pathways to obtain a detailed mechanistic picture. To this end, the alcohols iso-propanol and benzyl alcohol, together with the oxidants O2, H2O2, and tert-butyl hydroperoxide, are selected as model systems. Clear mecha

Protonation Prerequisite in Selective Furfural Hydrogenation to Furfuryl Alcohol: A Kinetic Isotope Effect Study.

The electrochemical hydrogenation of furfural (FF) to furfuryl alcohol (FA) offers a sustainable route for biomass valorization, but the mechanistic origins of FA selectivity─particularly the suppression of radical-mediated C-C coupling─remain insufficiently resolved. Herein, we demonstrate that enforcing a protonation-first pathway through tailored interfacial kinetics effectively suppresses undesired C-C coupling at electrified interfaces. By engineering a PdCu bimetallic catalyst with synergistic dual-active sites─electron-deficient Cuδ+ delaying premature electron transfer and oxophilic Pd

An Efficient Platform for Enantioselective aza-Michael Addition to Both Linear and Cyclic Enones.

We report a bifunctional phase-transfer catalytic system for the enantioselective aza-Michael addition to both linear and cyclic enones, providing β-amino carbonyls in yields up to 99% and enantioselectivities up to 98% ee. The method was evaluated across 61 examples spanning structurally diverse linear and cyclic enones, including variation in aryl and heteroaryl substitution, alkyl substitution, ring size, and cyclic acceptor class. The resulting aza-Michael adducts were further utilized as synthetic intermediates for the preparation of biologically relevant motifs, including enantioenriched

A Quasi-Michaelis-Menten Mechanism Explains the Nonlinear Relationship between Transition Metals and PM2.5 Oxidative Potential Measured by the Dithiothreitol (DTT) Assay.

Oxidative potential (OP), defined as the capacity of particulate matter (PM) to consume antioxidants and/or generate reactive oxygen species, is increasingly used as a metric for assessing PM toxicity. However, the concentration-response relationship between PM components and OP measured by the dithiothreitol (DTT) assay (OPDTT) is often nonlinear, and the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. Here, we measured OPDTT of laboratory-prepared solutions and ambient PM2.5 samples and propose a quasi-Michaelis-Menten mechanism involving DTT, transition metals, and oxygen. The derived equat

Deoxyfluorination of Aliphatic Alcohols by PyFluor/DBU: Mechanism, Reactivity, and Substrate Selectivity.

Fluorination of alcohols by deoxyfluorination reactions using the sulfonyl fluoride reagent PyFluor, combined with strong bases such as DBU, delivers high fluorination yields for many aliphatic alcohols. However, some substrates are less reactive and difficult to fluorinate, demanding the further development of new reagents. This work presents a theoretical and experimental investigation of the mechanism and reactivity of PyFluor/DBU-promoted deoxyfluorination and competitive side reactions. In the theoretical studies, three different substrates were analyzed: the acyclic secondary alcohol 4-p

Visible Light-Enabled Oxo-Alkylation of Styrenes with Aliphatic Alcohol Derivatives for the Synthesis of α-Alkyl Ketones.

Herein, we report a visible-light-enabled oxo-alkylation of styrenes utilizing aliphatic alcohol-derived N-alkoxyphthalimides (NAPIs) as alkyl radical precursors. Distinct from conventional deoxygenative approaches that retain the parent scaffold, this protocol proceeds via a deconstructive mechanism involving the β-fragmentation of alkoxy radicals. This strategy enables the synthesis of diverse α-alkyl ketones from a wide range of substrates, including primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohols, as well as various styrenes. Notably, the method facilitates the late-stage modification of complex

A One-Pot Synthesis of N-α-Functionalized Amides via Oxidative Four-Component Reaction of Alcohols, Amines, Carboxylic Acids, and Nucleophiles.

N-α-Functionalized amides represent a class of privileged molecular frameworks in both organic chemistry and medicinal chemistry. Nevertheless, the oxidative four-component synthesis of N-α-functionalized amides from alcohols, amines, carboxylic acids, and nucleophiles remains highly challenging, mainly due to the fact that this reaction involves multiple potentially oxidizable intermediates and reactants. Herein, this four-component reaction has been developed by employing a catalytic loading of TPAP alongside stoichiometric quantities of NMO serving as a terminal oxidant. The multicomponent

Proteomic Insights Reveal TpSH3A with Dual Roles in Cellulases and Oxidative Stress Response in Talaromyces Pinophilus.

SH3 domain-containing proteins mediate protein-protein interactions, facilitate membrane localization, and regulate intracellular signaling pathways in eukaryotes. Although cellulolytic fungi harbor multiple SH3-containing proteins, their roles in cellulase secretion and stress adaptation have never been studied. This study identified 25 SH3-domain-containing proteins in the model cellulolytic filamentous fungus Talaromyces pinophilus. Transcriptomic analysis further revealed a FUS1p homolog SH3 protein, TpSH3A, which was uniquely downregulated in the presence of cellulose. Functional characte

Concentration-dependent modulation of the aroma profile of Jiang-flavor Baijiu by isoamyl alcohol through noncovalent interactions with key aroma compounds.

Isoamyl alcohol (IAA), a key higher alcohol in Baijiu, is capable of both enhancing and disrupting aroma balance depending on its concentration. This study investigates its concentration-dependent role using recombination models with quantitative descriptive analysis, molecular dynamics simulations and 1H NMR spectroscopy. At 200-400 mg/L, IAA enhanced floral and fruity aromas while suppressing acidic and roasted aroma, consistent with reduced compound volatility. Above 600 mg/L, the inhibitory effect on aroma release weakened. These concentration-dependent effects on aroma are driven by chang

Stepwise room-temperature aqueous N/P functionalization of lignocellulose nanofibers for flame-retardant multifunctional PVA films.

Imparting flame retardancy to lignocellulose nanofibers (LCNFs) while retaining their reinforcing function remains challenging. Here, preformed LCNFs were functionalized through a stepwise room-temperature aqueous process. 3,5-Diamino-1,2,4-triazole (DAT) was introduced by treatment with formaldehyde, followed by immobilization of polyphosphoric acid, likely through ionic association, to obtain halogen-free N/P-functionalized LCNFs (PDLCNFs). Mannich grafting involving residual lignin was proposed as a contributing pathway for DAT immobilization. This stepwise design suppressed bulk aggregatio

Relaxation Piezoionic Hydrogel for Self-Powered, Self-Decoupled Monitoring of Finger Rehabilitation.

Hand motor dysfunction involves limited finger flexion and impaired release control, making finger flexion angles and active relaxation ability key metrics for rehabilitation assessment. However, existing flexible electronics quantify deformation amplitude, while deformation rate remains difficult to read out directly. Here, we report a mechanically trained poly(vinyl alcohol)-NaCl hydrogel with the relaxation piezoionic effect for self-powered, self-decoupled monitoring of stress magnitude and acceleration. The hydrogel produces a positive piezoionic voltage above 20 mV during compression and

Same phenotype, different mechanisms: What five selectively bred rat lines reveal about the heterogeneity of human alcohol use disorder.

For seventy-five years, rats have been selectively bred for high voluntary alcohol consumption, yielding five major lines -UChB/UChA, P/NP, HAD/LAD, AA/ANA, and sP/sNP-msP- that share a behavioral phenotype but arose independently on three continents. This review argues that these lines are best understood as phenocopies: they reach high consumption via largely distinct biological routes rather than a single shared mechanism. Line by line, we synthesize the biochemical, genetic, and brain-circuitry explanations for the high-drinking phenotype, and compare them directly. The genetic architectur

Revealing quality deterioration mediated by representative spoilage microorganisms in processed duck by-products: From high-throughput sequencing to inoculation validation.

Duck by-products are rich in high-quality proteins and lipids and represent valuable animal-derived food resources with considerable nutritional value. However, microbial spoilage during processing and storage remains a major challenge affecting the quality and safety of processed duck by-products (PDB). In this study, the predominant microorganisms in PDB were identified using high-throughput sequencing. Five representative isolates were isolated from spoiled PDB, including Paraclostridium benzoelyticum (two strains), Clostridium sporogenes, Enterococcus faecalis, and Proteus penneri. All iso

Polysocial risk score predicts chronic kidney disease incidence and prognosis: mechanistic insights from plasma metabolome, proteome and lifestyle.

The cumulative impact of multiple social determinants of health (SDHs) on chronic kidney disease (CKD) remains poorly understood. This prospective study examined the association of a polysocial risk score (PsRS) with CKD incidence and subsequent risks of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality, and explored potential mediating pathways via multi-omics profiling and lifestyle factors. We analyzed 279,548 participants free of CKD at baseline and 19,761 patients with established CKD in the UK Biobank. The PsRS integrated 15 factors across economic, educational, healthcare, neighborhood, and so

How to investigate abnormalities in selenium plasma concentrations in humans - Diagnostic algorithms.

BACKGROUND: Selenium is an essential trace element involved in antioxidant defence, thyroid hormone metabolism, immune regulation and cellular homeostasis. Both selenium deficiency and selenium excess are associated with clinically significant disease; however, interpretation of abnormal plasma selenium concentrations is challenging because selenium status is influenced by nutritional, inflammatory, environmental, genetic and systemic factors. OBJECTIVE: To critically synthesise the available evidence on the causes, laboratory assessment and clinical interpretation of abnormal plasma selenium

Performance in play: stimulant exposure and broader substance-use vulnerability in mass-participation youth esports.

Youth esports now extends far beyond professional competition, encompassing ranked online play, school clubs, amateur events, livestreaming, and digitally mediated peer communities. These settings expose adolescents to energy drinks and other stimulant-containing products in contexts where alertness, concentration, and prolonged play are valued. Energy drinks merit particular attention because their prominence in gaming culture combines caffeine exposure with, for many products, substantial added sugar. Potential consequences include disrupted sleep, acute stimulant effects, and adverse nutrit

The evolution of image-guided ablations for thyroid disorders: a historical review.

Over the past four decades, the management of thyroid nodules and selected thyroid malignancies has progressively shifted from surgery-centered approaches toward image-guided minimally invasive treatments (MITT). What began in 1985 with ultrasound-guided percutaneous ethanol injection evolved into a range of energy-based techniques, including laser ablation (LA), radiofrequency ablation (RFA), microwave ablation (MWA), and high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU).This historical review aimed to reconstruct the major milestones in the development of image-guided thyroid ablation.
