Tanacetum parthenium and parthenolide increase defensive agents and promote antisecretory activity supporting their gastroprotective actions in rodents.

Tanacetum parthenium is popularly used to treat gastric disorders. However, the gastroprotective activity has not yet been tested. This study evaluated the anti-ulcer gastric effects of hydroalcoholic extract from T. parthenium (HETp) and parthenolide (PTL), its bioactive compound. Our findings revealed a significant reduction in HETp (10, 30, or 100 mg/Kg) and PTL (5 and 50 mg/Kg) in ethanol and piroxicam-induced ulcers, and this evidence was corroborated histologically. In addition, we explored the acid antisecretory activity by the pylorus ligation. Moreover, in mice pre-treated with the in

Acute Liver Failure and Human Herpesvirus 6 Infection: Reactivation in Immunoparesis?

INTRODUCTION: HHV-6 infection is usually asymptomatic or self-limited, although in certain populations, particularly in immunocompromised patients, it can cause serious infections. Hepatic involvement, previously described in immunocompromised and occasionally in immunocompetent adults, can lead to acute liver failure (ALF). CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 20-year-old female with no known liver disease, who presented with a 4-day history of diffuse abdominal pain, vomiting, and fever on the first day. She reported an influenza-like syndrome the previous week and undetermined weight l

Hydrogen Peroxide Induces Ethanol-inducible CYP2E1 via the NF-kB-classical Pathway: CYP2E1 mRNA Levels are not High in Alcoholic Hepatitis.

AIMS: The aim of the present study is to elucidate the mechanism of CYP2E1 induction as a causative factor of Alcoholic Hepatitis (AH) and its relationship with inflammation. BACKGROUND: Chronic alcohol consumption induces CYP2E1, which is involved in the development of Alcoholic Hepatitis (AH). However, the mechanisms underlying the induction of CYP2E1 by alcohol remain unclear. Therefore, we herein investigated the induction of drug-metabolizing enzymes, particularly CYP2E1, by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), the concentration of which is elevated under inflammatory conditions. OBJECTIVE: The me

Alcohol-associated liver disease - a current overview.

Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) remains a major and increasingly pressing concern in hepatology. ALD includes spectrum of conditions, each with unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Excessive alcohol intake is a leading preventable cause of physical harm, including ALD. The pathogenesis of ALD involves oxidative stress, inflammation, and lipid metabolism disruptions, with genetic predispositions playing a major role. ALD progresses from hepatic steatosis to steatohepatitis, and finally liver cirrhosis, which is marked by severe fibrosis and impaired liver function. Advanced ALD

Deciphering the role of LncRNA in alcoholic liver disease: Mechanisms and therapeutic potential.

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is a spectrum of liver damage caused by chronic alcohol consumption. The disease progresses in stages, starting with simple fatty liver, progressing to alcoholic hepatitis and potentially leading to fibrosis and cirrhosis. The pathophysiology of ALD is complex and involves several cellular and molecular mechanisms. Recent research has highlighted the role of long non-coding RNAs (LncRNAs) as critical regulators in the development and progression of ALD. This article reviews the current understanding of LncRNAs in ALD, focusing on their functions in key pathologica

Catalpol inhibits HHcy-induced EndMT in endothelial cells by modulating ROS/NF-κB signaling.

BACKGROUND: Hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) is an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis (AS). Endothelial mesenchymal transition (EndMT) refers to the process in which endothelial cells lose endothelial cell morphology and characteristic gene expression, and acquire phenotypic characteristics and gene expression related to mesenchymal cells. Numerous studies have confirmed that EndMT is involved in the formation of atherosclerosis. Catalpol is one of the active components of Rehmannia, which has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, neuroprotective and other biological activities. Stud

Genome-wide identification of the Gossypium hirsutum CAD gene family and functional study of GhiCAD23 under drought stress.

Cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD) is a crucial enzyme in the final stage of lignin monomer biosynthesis. This study focuses on the CAD gene family within Gossypium hirsutum. Through comprehensive genomic analysis, we identified 29 GhiCAD genes within the Gossypium hirsutum genome using a bioinformatics approach. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the GhiCAD family can be categorized into four subgroups, which are closest to the evolutionary relationship with Arabidopsis thaliana. There are multiple cis-acting elements on the promoters of GhiCAD genes associated with abiotic stress response

Striatal Dopaminergic Function and Motor Slowing in Essential Tremor Plus.

BACKGROUND: While previous imaging studies have generally shown normal striatal dopamine transporter (DAT) binding in essential tremor (ET), emerging evidence suggests a partial dopaminergic mechanism in this condition and an epidemiological link between ET and Parkinson's disease (PD). This link seems particularly meaningful in ET patients with additional neurological signs, such as slowness of movements, rigidity, or rest tremor (ET+). OBJECTIVES: To investigate the potential dopaminergic pathophysiology of ET+ and to compare it to PD. METHODS: Fourty-three ET+ patients, 115 PD patients an

Molluscicidal Activity of Extracts and Fractions From Hagenia abyssinica, Rosa abyssinica, and Cucumis ficifolius Against Biomphalaria and Bulinus Snails.

Background: Schistosomiasis continues to be a major public health concern in Ethiopia. Eliminating the intermediate host snails is an effective and cost-efficient strategy for preventing and controlling schistosomiasis transmission. However, chemical molluscicides have limitations due to their toxicity to nontarget aquatic organisms, environmental concerns, and the development of resistance. Plant-based molluscicides are biodegradable, less toxic, safe, and cost-effective. Objective: This study is aimed at evaluating the molluscicidal activity of Hagenia abyssinica flowers, Rosa abyssinica fru

"I Think You Covered the Three Levels of Drugs and Consent": Qualitatively Testing Different Operationalizations of an Alcohol and Other Drugs-Involved Sexual Violence.

Substance-involved rape is increasing among college students, particularly women (Koss et al., 2022). Addressing rape requires first measuring it accurately in surveys to understand its true scope and nature. We used cognitive interviews with 40 young adults to qualitatively test the construct validity of an alcohol- and other drugs (AOD)-involved rape item in the Sexual Experiences Survey by asking participants to comment on different operationalizations of this construct. Our findings revealed that different phrasings elicited different interpretations of the items by participants. Specifica
