The role of contextual factors, school-related attitudes and behavioural traits on lifetime antisocial behaviours among adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Antisocial behaviour is a result of a multifactorial process that involves both social-level and individual-level factors. The present study aims to investigate the association of contextual factors with the odds of engaging in antisocial behaviours, and to explore the role of school-related attitudes and behavioural traits in the association between contextual factors and antisocial behaviour among 12- to 14-year-old adolescents. METHODS: The analytical sample included 1847 students of 29 secondary schools in Italy who participated in the baseline survey of the "GAPUnplugged" s

Protocol for a cluster randomized controlled trial among young people and their peers to reduce substance use and inequitable gender beliefs in Southern Africa.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Substance use and the internalization of traditional gender norms, or inequitable gender beliefs, are co-occurring risk behaviors for poorer health and well-being in young people in Southern Africa. Addressing the social and structural factors that reinforce substance use and inequitable gender beliefs, including peer influence and socioeconomic adversity, such as lack of education or employment, is necessary to support sustainable change in these behaviors. However, most existing interventions focus only on changing individual behavior. This study will therefore aim to ad

Engineering g-C3N4/CsPbCl3 Heterojunctions for Selective Photocatalytic Oxidation of Benzylic Alcohols.

The selective oxidation of benzylic alcohols to carbonyl compounds is a fundamental transformation in the synthesis of fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals, yet conventional methods often rely on stoichiometric oxidants and generate significant waste. Herein, we report a sustainable heterogeneous photocatalytic system based on engineered g-C3N4/CsPbCl3 heterojunctions for the aerobic oxidation of benzylic alcohols under visible-light irradiation. A series of heterojunction photocatalysts with different compositions was prepared and evaluated, identifying the material containing 10%W/W CsPbCl3 as

Reaction-Dependent Structure-Activity Relationships in Penta-Twinned Palladium Nanocrystals.

Structural and electronic descriptors are widely used to rationalize electrocatalytic activity, but their predictive relevance can depend on the reaction pathway and adsorbed intermediates involved. Systematic comparisons of this reaction dependence using the same well-defined Pd nanostructures remain relatively limited. Here, two structurally related penta-twinned Pd nanocrystals, penta-twinned Pd nanosheets and decahedral nanocrystals, were comparatively evaluated for the oxygen reduction reaction, ethanol oxidation reaction, and formic acid oxidation reaction. For ORR, the more downshifted

Acute Alcohol-Associated Hepatitis: The Role of Liver Transplantation.

Severe alcohol-associated hepatitis (AH) remains one of the most challenging syndromes in hepatology and critical care, with high short-term mortality despite advances in supportive management. Although corticosteroids remain the only guideline-endorsed pharmacologic therapy shown to improve early survival, their benefit is modest, limited to selected patients, and frequently complicated by infection. Consequently, contemporary management extends well beyond corticosteroid therapy and requires meticulous supportive care, nutritional optimization, infection surveillance, management of portal hy

Climate Shapes Elevational Gradients in Concentration, Composition, and Functional Diversity of Willow Metabolomes.

Plants produce broad spectra of metabolites comprising primary metabolites involved in core physiological processes and specialized metabolites mediating responses to biotic and abiotic stress. Understanding how these various components of the metabolome respond to different environmental pressures can help us to understand drivers of phytochemical diversity and its role in plant ecology and evolution. We investigated how climatic stress, soil resources, and herbivory influence various measures of phytochemical diversity in four willow species along an elevational gradient (950-2250 m a.s.l.),

Cinnamic Acid Attenuates Ethanol-Exacerbated Hepatocyte Pyroptosis in Type 2 Diabetes via AMPK-Mediated NLRP3/GSDMD Inhibition.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is frequently accompanied by chronic ethanol (ET) consumption, which worsens metabolic dysregulation and organ damage. Cinnamic acid (CA), a natural compound with anti-diabetic and hepatoprotective effects, shows therapeutic potential, but its role in mitigating ET-exacerbated hepatocyte injury in diabetes remains unclear. This study thus investigated whether CA protects against ET-induced hepatocyte pyroptosis under diabetic conditions and explored the underlying mechanisms. In vitro, HepG2 cells cultured under high-glucose (HG) conditions were exposed to ET to

From imaging to impact: A case of renal arteriovenous malformation.

Renal arteriovenous malformations (rAVMs) are rare vascular anomalies, presenting with gross hematuria and requiring prompt diagnosis and management. We reported a case of a middle-aged male presenting with persistent and unexplained gross hematuria. Initial cystoscopy revealed a significant burden in the urinary bladder without any identifiable bleeding source. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography followed by CT angiography demonstrated a vascular nidus with early venous filling at the lower pole of the left kidney, consistent with rAVMs. The patient had a successful selective transcatheter

Synthesis and characterization of PVA-co-acrylic acid incorporating magnesium nanoparticles and their application in sweetening of natural gas.

Natural gas sweetening, involving removal of CO2 and H2S from CH4, is conventionally carried out by amine scrubbing, which is highly energy intensive. In the present study, we report the synthesis of poly(vinyl alcohol-co-acrylic acid) (PVA-co-AAc) based nanocomposite membranes incorporated with surface-stabilized magnesium nanoparticles (MgNPs) through a simple aqueous route. The MgNPs act as Lewis basic sites providing reversible chemisorption for CO2/H2S, while the polymer matrix ensures hydrophilic pathways for solution-diffusion along with mechanical robustness. The prepared membranes wer

A preliminary assessment of high melting point, reduced sugar ice cream: Microstructure, consumer acceptance, nutritional impact, life cycle assessment, shelf-life, and energy consumption.

Ice cream and other frozen desserts such as custard, gelato, and soft serve products are popular dietary options for various purposes including nutrition and satiety. These products are generally calorie dense due to such factors as US standards of identity (e.g., minimum 10% milkfat), sensory appeal for comfort foods, and various industry conventions such as those relating to mechanical freezing, extended storage, and even acceptable rheology for scooping and consumption. Yet, there are sufficient indications, including dietary interests for reduced dietary sugar intake and potential energy s

Exploring College Students' Compliance During a 60-Day Alcohol-Related Ecological Momentary Assessment Using Location- and Time-Based Questions: Prospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) methods can provide assessment of alcohol-related beliefs and behaviors when people are in their natural environments. An increasingly common EMA approach involves the use of passive sensors (eg, continuous sharing of Bluetooth and GPS cell phone data) to collect rich data and trigger alcohol assessment in specific contexts. While collecting real-time assessments allows researchers to explore contextual factors impacting alcohol use, there is a lack of research examining compliance rates to alcohol-related EMAs that use daily questions for stud

Modeling the Neurocircuitry Involved in Binge Drinking.

Binge drinking is characterized by an initial bout of rapid, high-vigor alcohol intake (front-loading) followed by a prolonged period of lower-rate "maintenance" drinking, yet the circuit mechanisms that generate and regulate these phases remain unclear. Here, we develop a systems-level computational model that links the structure of binge drinking to interactions among medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), insula, striatum, and ventral tegmental area (VTA). The model consists of cortical Seek (mPFC) and Go (insula) populations that form a mutually excitatory loop, a SetPoint population that integr

Coupled capillary-cavitation model for secondary droplet breakup in high-intensity ultrasonic field.

A coupled physics-based model is developed to describe secondary breakup of levitating droplets in a high-intensity ultrasonic standing wave field. The model uniquely integrates acoustic radiation pressure-induced droplet deformation, parametric excitation of capillary waves, radial oscillations and collective interaction of cavitation bubbles, and energy accumulation in the system. The methodology involves simultaneous numerical solution of the Mathieu-Hill equation, the Rayleigh-Plesset equation with inter-bubble pressure coupling, and energy conservation principles.
