A 50-year-old man was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) in 1980; he was treated with chemotherapy and achieved complete remission. Six years later he reported upper abdominal pain. Ultrasound (US) showed a 3-cm mass in the right lobe of the liver. Needle aspiration showed hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The patient was treated with radical resection of the tumor. 5-Aminolevulinic acid (ALA), a heme precursor accumulated in chemical and inborn porphyrias, may behave as an endogenous pro-oxidant. A Nigerian series of 890 patients with primary liver cell carcinoma, seen during the recent three years, has been examined with a view to establishing the natural history of the tumour in untreated cases. There were 60 males and the mean age of all the patients was 50 years. Hepatitis B surface antigen was positive in 70 pc of tested patients and there were higher pathologic levels of aflatoxins in these patients when compared to normal controls. The histological and ultrastructural features of oncogene transformed rat liver epithelial (RLE) cells in culture and spontaneously transformed RLE cells were studied. The tumours produced in nude mice by all the transformed cells were either moderately well differentiated carcinomas or sarcomatous tumours. Epithelial tumours were produced in the RLE cells after transduction of both v-raf and v-myc oncogenes whereas sarcomatous tumours were produced after transduction of v-raf alone. Serum Complement (C3), proteins and circulating immune complex levels were estimated in Nigerians having primary liver cell carcinoma and control subjects by immunodiffusion in agar, biuret and polyethylene glycol precipitation methods respectively. We studied the blood vessels in routinely formalin-fixed and paraffin-processed tissue from 18 hepatocellular carcinomas, three "small" hepatocellular carcinomas, and 15 benign nodular lesions representing a spectrum of conditions with which liver cell carcinomas may be confused. This paper is a retrospective review of the 780 admissions with malignancy to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital over a five year period, 1983-1987, carried out to determine the type of malignancies presenting and their relative frequencies and to compare this with the rest of West Africa. The commonest tumours were primary liver cell carcinoma with a proportional frequency of 17%, carcinoma of the breast (8%) and bladder (7%). There is a lower incidence of trophoblastic carcinoma (0.3%) than might be expected and a higher incidence of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (8% of male tumours).

Guided percutaneous fine needle aspiration cytodiagnosis of the liver, retroperitoneum and pancreas was performed in 197 patients. A patient known with acute intermittent porphyria who developed primary liver-cell carcinoma is described. No other risk factors were found. A possible association of acute intermittent porphyria with the development of primary liver-cell carcinoma has been suggested in recent, mainly Scandinavian literature. So far this association has never been described in The Netherlands.

In presented study, retrospective epidemiological analysis was performed in 84 patients dead due primary hepatocellular carcinoma, selected from among 17,973 persons dead in Białystok hospitals from 1975 till 1988. Before application of embolization material vasoconstriction of healthy blood vessels is achieved by intraarterial injection of norepinephrine. Spuriously low electronic white-cell count was obtained on EDTA-anticoagulated blood from a 54-year-old male suffering from liver cell carcinoma. In an attempt to understand better the phenomenon, in vitro studies were performed. Two cases of primary liver cell carcinoma simulating extra-hepatic biliary obstruction are presented. In order to avoid false diagnosis and preventable laparotomy, it is suggested that peritoneoscopy and target liver biopsy should be preferred to blind liver biopsy in the investigation of biliary obstruction.

A mouse monoclonal antibody directed against the protein product of the hepatitis B virus X open reading frame was prepared. This antibody was used to screen liver tissue sections from patients with chronic hepatitis (CH) and patients with liver cell carcinoma (LCC).
