The personal and the public in residents' burnout: a cross-sectional investigation.

BACKGROUND: Medical residents are especially prone to burnout. Burnout has historically been viewed as a work-related condition. Burnout also occurs in life domains other than work, such as relationships and parenthood. The present investigation takes a holistic view of resident burnout, considering both public (i.e., work-related) and personal (i.e., couple, parental) burnout. The present investigation examines the interplay between resident burnout in different life domains, their antecedent (i.e., work-family conflict), and outcomes (i.e., job, couple, and parental satisfaction; turnover an

Multi-omics reveals a novel Cxcr4+ subpopulation of alveolar macrophages and therapeutic effect of AMD3100 in mice with advanced silicosis.

BACKGROUND: Silicosis is a work-related condition resulting from breathing in crystalline silica particles, marked by persistent inflammation and abnormal healing mechanisms in the lungs. Our previous studies demonstrated that inhibition of Cxcr4 with Plerixafor (AMD3100) markedly attenuates pulmonary fibrosis. METHODS: By integrating single-cell RNA sequencing with spatial transcriptomics, we analysed lung tissues from a mouse model of pneumoconiosis. Using the Robust Cell Type Decomposition algorithm to deconvolve spatial transcriptomic data, we identified Cxcr4+ macrophages and Cxcl12+ fib

Using the Machine Learning Algorithm XGBoost to Understand the Correlates of Wearing Hearing Protection in Central States' Agricultural Producers.

PURPOSE: Hearing loss is a common work-related condition. Estimates suggest that 46%-86% of agricultural workers have hearing loss. Agricultural safety programs have been working to increase the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect against noise, respiratory, and chemical exposures, but PPE use remains sporadic. The purpose of this study was to assess factors that might explain the use of hearing protection in agricultural operators working in seven states in the Central United States. METHOD: The Farm and Ranch Health and Safety Survey data collected in 2018, 2020, and 2023

Coping flexibility and strategy use predict burnout: A two-week longitudinal study.

Burnout is a prevalent and costly work-related condition characterized by four symptom dimensions: cognitive impairment, emotional impairment, mental distance and exhaustion. Although coping, coping flexibility, and cognitive flexibility have been linked to burnout, their unique contributions to its dimensions remain unclear. This longitudinal study used regression analyses to test whether coping, coping flexibility, and cognitive flexibility predict dimensions of burnout two weeks later, adjusting for covariates and baseline burnout. Participants were 337 Australian adults (62% women), aged 1

Work-related injuries and attendance at a Canadian regional emergency department.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring trends in the burden of illness and injury attributable to work is key in assessing occupational health hazards; however, New Brunswick does not participate in the Canadian National Ambulatory Care Reporting System which itself does not collect details of occupation and industry. AIMS: We set out to determine the proportion of emergency department attendances that were attributable to a work-related cause. We also wanted to evaluate the recording of occupation in the electronic health record system, and to describe the characteristics of patients with a work-related pre

Physician Well-Being.

Burnout is a work-related condition. Although stress may be a part of emergency medicine, excessive levels of chronic stress can lead to maladaptive behaviors and burnout. Burnout can lead to decreased physician longevity and performance and poorer patient outcomes. The first step is recognizing burnout in providers. Efforts can then be made to identify modifiable or unnecessary sources of stress to help reduce chronic stress and burnout. Solutions should be found to eliminate or ameliorate individual-level and system-level sources of stress.

Management of lateral epicondylitis.

Lateral epicondylitis is the most common cause of lateral elbow pain. Although also known as tennis elbow, lateral epicondylitis often develops as a work-related condition and therefore constitutes a major public health issue. This article reviews the pathophysiological factors involved in lateral epicondylitis, as well as the tools available for establishing the diagnosis and ruling out other causes of lateral elbow pain. Finally, the non-operative and surgical treatment options are discussed in detail.

Blood hypomethylation of inflammatory genes mediates the effects of metal-rich airborne pollutants on blood coagulation.

OBJECTIVES: Recent investigations have associated airborne particulate matter (PM) with increased coagulation and thrombosis, but underlying biological mechanisms are still incompletely characterised. DNA methylation is an environmentally sensitive mechanism of gene regulation that could potentially contribute to PM-induced hypercoagulability. We aimed to test whether altered methylation mediates environmental effects on coagulation. METHODS: We investigated 63 steel workers exposed to a wide range of PM levels, as a work-related condition with well-characterised prothrombotic exposure. We me

Carpal tunnel syndrome--can it be a work related condition?

BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of the most common hand conditions seen in clinical practice. Many in the workforce, both male and female, will develop carpal tunnel syndrome and many will claim that their workplace has caused their condition. OBJECTIVE: This article seeks to guide the examining practitioner in answering the questions of patients and insurance companies as to whether a patient with the established diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome has an acceptable workers' compensation claim for treatment. DISCUSSION: Carpal tunnel syndrome is mostly constitutional and due to in

Laboratory animal allergy: an occupational hazard.

Laboratory animal allergy is a relatively common work-related condition occurring in an estimated one-third of laboratory animal workers. More than 10% of these workers develop occupational asthma. Sensitization often occurs in the first 3 years of employment. Risk factors include a personal or family history of atopy, other preexisting non-work-related allergies, and a significant exposure to laboratory animals. Inhalation is the most common route of exposure, followed by skin and eye exposures. Preplacement testing and regular health surveillance screening may be used by institutions employi
