The results are described of a retrospective study, per questionnaire among parents who adopted children from developing countries. Results are given of 228 children. Approximately 100 gastro-intestinal, 80 upper respiratory (nose-, ear- and throat-)diseases and 50 dermatologic problems were diagnosed. We further studied the state of nutrition and the medical information which the parents received from the country of origin. 30-40% of the children arrived malnourished and the catch-up growth was determined after a stay of at least 6 months in the Netherlands. In an unselected group of 120 Polish employees of a PCV production plant, nailfold capillaroscopic as well as general medical examination and some laboratory investigations (serum paper electrophoresis, IgA, IgG, IgM immunoglobulin concentration) were performed. The value of routine spirometry was investigated in 631 unselected out-patients. The spirogram was abnormal in 17%, the ECG in 15% and the chest X-ray in 13% of patients. In an effort to determine if routine prenatal chest roentgenograms were of practical value, the records of 12,109 consecutive deliveries at the Mayo Clinic were reviewed retrospectively. The roentgenograms were obtained during the first or second prenatal visit and additionally when warranted by notable symptoms or physical findings in subsequent prenatal visits. It is reported on a new method of the establishment of the biological age. The test battery designed comprises 12 parameters, from which a so-called biological index can be calculated which on its part serves as basis for the establishment of biological age. The realisability of the methods is demonstrated by examinations carried out on 340 healthy persons. The method developed for the geriatric practice is regarded as supplementation of the general medical examination and for the clarification of certain, above all gerontologically orientated questions.
