Vascular Phenotyping with Photoacoustic and Ultrasound Imaging in Cardiovascular Disease: Recent Innovations.

We studied the malaria transmission dynamics in Kassena Nankana district (KND), a site in northern Ghana proposed for testing malaria vaccines. Intensive mosquito sampling for 1 year using human landing catches in three micro-ecological sites (irrigated, lowland and rocky highland) yielded 18 228 mosquitoes. Anopheles gambiae s.l. and Anopheles funestus constituted 94.3% of the total collection with 76.8% captured from the irrigated communities. Other species collected but in relatively few numbers were Anopheles pharoensis (5.4%) and Anopheles rufipes (0.3%). Molecular analysis of 728 An. gam

Nutritional disparities between urban poor and non-poor Malaysian children under five in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Rapid urbanisation in Asia has widened intra-urban nutritional disparities, particularly among urban-poor children during periods of compromised food security. METHODS: This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate nutritional disparities among children under five in an urban locality during the COVID-19 pandemic. We recruited 717 children aged 6-59 months from July 2020 to June 2023 across three sites in Selangor, Malaysia. Preterm or small-for-gestational-age children and those with incomplete data were excluded. Dietary intake was assessed by 24-h recall adapted from WHO-IYCF

Maternal metabolic determinants of accelerated infant weight gain in early life: assessing the combined effects of gestational diabetes and pre-pregnancy overweight.

Pre-pregnancy overweight and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) increase the risk of accelerated fetal growth, but the effect of their individual or combined exposure on infant growth trajectory remains unclear. Clarifying whether these exposures will lead to sustained or time-limited growth patterns is essential for developing tailored, time-sensitive early childhood monitoring strategies. Methods We analyzed a population-based cohort of 16,712 mother-infant pairs from Jiangsu Province (2024) using longitudinal data. Infant weight was measured at birth, 1, 3, and 6 months. Linear mixed effect

Sensitive periods of BMI change from childhood to adulthood on subclinical cardiovascular outcomes: a 36-year prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The sensitive period during which the adult cardiovascular system is particularly vulnerable to body mass index (BMI) changes remains unclear. This study aimed to examine how rates of BMI change from childhood to adulthood influence the risk of subclinical cardiovascular outcomes in mid-adulthood. METHODS: This cohort study included 2446 participants from the Hanzhong Adolescent Hypertension Study who had at least two BMI measurements in childhood/adolescence (6-18 years) and at least two in adulthood (≥ 19 years). The BMI growth curve from ages 6 to 52 years was modeled using ran

Infants with Excessive Weight Gain while Exclusively Breastfeeding: Follow-Up at 36 Months.

Objectives: Rapid weight gain in infancy is associated with an increased risk of later adiposity. Very rarely, however, exclusively breastfed infants experience excessive weight gain (EWG) during the period of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) when breast milk is the only source of nutrition. We investigated growth and body composition at 36 months in children experiencing EWG during EBF. Methods: Ten infants with EWG during the first 6 months of EBF were followed up at 36 months. The infants had been followed from age 5 months. Examinations included anthropometry, body composition by bioimpedance

Latent classes of anthropometric growth in early childhood using uni- and multivariate approaches in a South African birth cohort.

BACKGROUND: Defining growth patterns during childhood is key to identifying future health risk and vulnerable periods for potential interventions. The aim of this study was to identify growth profiles in children from birth to five years in a South African birth cohort, the Drakenstein Child Health Study (DCHS) using a Latent Class Mixed Modelling (LCMM) approach. METHODS: LCMM was used to identify underlying latent profiles of growth for univariate responses of standardized height, standardized weight, standardized body mass index and standardized weight-for-length/height measurements and mu

Prenatal Exposure to Nonpersistent Chemicals and Fetal-to-childhood Growth Trajectories.

INTRODUCTION: Prenatal exposure to nonpersistent chemicals, including organophosphate pesticides, phthalates, and bisphenols, is associated with altered fetal and childhood growth. Few studies have examined these associations using longitudinal growth trajectories or considering exposure to chemical mixtures. METHODS: Among 777 participants from the Generation R Study, we used growth mixture models to identify weight and body mass index trajectories using weight and height measures collected from the prenatal period to age 13. We measured exposure biomarkers for organophosphate pesticides, ph

Prenatal exposure to PM2.5 and childhood body mass index growth trajectories from birth to 6 years old.

This study aimed to determine the relationships between prenatal PM2.5 exposure and childhood growth trajectories during the first 6 years of life. A total of 47,625 pairs of mothers and children were recruited from a prospective birth cohort conducted between 2011 and 2013 in Wuhan, China, and followed for 6 years. We used the group-based trajectory models to classify the population into three trajectory groups: slow growth (n = 13,671, 28.7%), normal growth (n = 29,736, 62.4%), and rapid growth (n = 4218, 8.9%). Multinomial logistic regression models were used to determine the associations o

Global, regional, and national progress towards the 2030 global nutrition targets and forecasts to 2050: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021.

BACKGROUND: The six global nutrition targets (GNTs) related to low birthweight, exclusive breastfeeding, child growth (ie, wasting, stunting, and overweight), and anaemia among females of reproductive age were chosen by the World Health Assembly in 2012 as key indicators of maternal and child health, but there has yet to be a comprehensive report on progress for the period 2012 to 2021. We aimed to evaluate levels, trends, and observed-to-expected progress in prevalence and attributable burden from 2012 to 2021, with prevalence projections to 2050, in 204 countries and territories. Rapid identification of primary atopic disorders (PAD) by a clinical landmark-guided, upfront use of genomic sequencing.

Primary atopic disorders (PAD) are monogenic disorders caused by pathogenic gene variants encoding proteins that are key for the maintenance of a healthy skin barrier and a well-functioning immune system. Physicians face the challenge to find single, extremely rare PAD patients/families among the millions of individuals with common allergic diseases. We describe case scenarios with signature PAD. We review the literature and deduct specific clinical red flags for PAD detection. They include a positive family history and/or signs of pathological susceptibility to infections, immunodysregulation

Paternal BMI in the preconception period, and the association with child zBMI.

BACKGROUND: Rapid growth and excess weight in early childhood are associated with obesity risk. While maternal preconception BMI has been identified as a potential risk factor, the role of paternal preconception BMI is less clear. OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between paternal preconception BMI and age- and sex-standardized WHO BMI z-score (zBMI) growth rates, zBMI, and weight status, in 0- to 10-year-old children. To determine whether these associations differed by child sex and maternal preconception weight status. METHODS: A longitudinal cohort study was conducted through The App

The heritability of weight gain in infancy: A population-based twin study.

BACKGROUND: Rapid weight gain during infancy is a strong predictor of childhood obesity and is affected by genetic and environmental factors. Identifying ages with low heritability will allow for targeted interventions that might be able to prevent the adverse effects of childhood obesity. OBJECTIVES: The objective of the study is to estimate the heritability of weight gain from birth to defined ages during infancy, as well as during 6-month periods from birth to 18 months of age. We address this by leveraging large-scale computerised anthropometric data from the state-run network of well-bab

Birth conditions nutritional status in childhood associated with cardiometabolic risk factors at 30 years of age: a cohort study.

This study aimed to assess the association of birth conditions, nutritional status, and childhood growth with cardiometabolic risk factors at 30 years of age. We also evaluated whether body mass index (BMI) at 30 years mediated the association of weight gain in childhood with cardiometabolic risk factors. This is a prospective cohort study that included all live births in 1982 in hospitals in the city of Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, whose families lived in the urban area. Mothers were interviewed at birth, and participants were followed at different ages. For our analyses, we used

Prenatal and postnatal exposure to NO2 and rapid infant weight gain - A population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood overweight and obesity is a global public health problem. Rapid infant weight gain is predictive of childhood overweight. Studies found that exposure to ambient air pollution is associated with childhood overweight, and have linked prenatal exposure to air pollution with rapid infant weight gain. OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between prenatal and postnatal ambient NO2 exposure, a traffic-related marker, with rapid weight gain in infants. METHODS: We carried out a population-based historical cohort study using data from the Israeli national network of maternal a

Longitudinal body mass index trajectories at preschool age: children with rapid growth have differential composition of the gut microbiota in the first year of life.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: The steep rise in childhood obesity has emerged as a worldwide public health problem. The first 4 years of life are a critical window where long-term developmental patterns of body mass index (BMI) are established and a critical period for microbiota maturation. Understanding how the early-life microbiota relate to preschool growth may be useful for identifying preventive interventions for childhood obesity. We aim to investigate whether longitudinal shifts within the bacterial community between 3 months and 1 year of life are associated with preschool BMI z-score traject
