The Role of Emotion Understanding in the Development of Aggression and Callous-Unemotional Features across Early Childhood.

Although prior research suggests that children show rapid change in socioemotional functioning and aggression throughout early childhood, little is known about how these factors may be associated with the development of callous-unemotional (CU) features. This study investigated the parallel development of, and reciprocal relationships between, emotion understanding (EU) and aggression across early childhood, as well as how they play a role in the development of CU features. Parallel latent growth curve modeling was used to examine longitudinal reciprocal relationships between EU and aggression

Early-Life Growth and Benign Breast Disease.

Using prospective data from the Early Determinants of Mammographic Density study (United States, 1959-2008, n = 1121), we examined the associations between maternal body size, birth size, and infant and early childhood growth during 3 time periods (0-4 months, 4-12 months, and 1-4 years) and benign breast disease (BBD) using multivariable logistic regression with generalized estimating equations. A total of 197 women (17.6%) reported receiving a diagnosis of BBD by a physician. Higher body mass index at age 7 years was inversely associated with BBD risk. Rapid weight gain from age 1 year to 4

RME: effects on the nasal septum. A CBCT evaluation.

AIM: Three-dimensional images have been evaluated to study the changes that occur on the maxillary complex and the nasal septum, following rapid maxillary expansion (RME) in growing children. METHODS: The records of 39 consecutively treated patients (20 male, 19 female), aged between 6.2 and 12.3 years (mean 8.6 years, S.D. 1.5), presenting a septal deviation of more than 1 mm, were analysed. Each patient was scanned at two distinct periods. The first image (T0) was obtained before treatment and hence represented the patient's baseline condition prior to expansion. The second time point (T1)

Dietary intake of n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids in Korean toddlers 12-24 months of age with comparison to the dietary recommendations.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Adequate dietary fatty acid intake is important for toddlers between 12-24 months of age, as this is a period of dietary transition in conjunction with rapid growth and development; however, actual fatty acid intake during this period seldom has been explored. This study was conducted to assess the intake status of n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids by toddlers during the 12-24-month period using 2010-2015 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Twenty-four-hour dietary recall data of 12-24-month-old toddlers (n = 544) was use

Feeding patterns and growth trajectories in breast-fed and formula-fed infants during the introduction of complementary food.

Introduction: several investigations have identified breastfeeding as a protective factor for rapid infant weight gain and childhood obesity while other studies have found that this protective effect could be the result of confounding factors. Objectives: to assess the associations between lactation practices (breast-fed vs formula-fed infants) during the introduction of complementary food period, as well as the following: a) patterns of food intake; and b) trajectories of growth at six, nine and 12 months (z-score of weight, height and body mass index [BMI] and changes in these z-scores from

Early-Life Nutrition, Growth Trajectories, and Long-Term Outcome.

It is well established that nutrition during the first 1,000 days of life can have a long-term effect on growth, metabolic outcome, and long-term health. We review the long-term anthropometric follow-ups of children with risk of later morbidity: (a) very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants who have birth weights <10th percentile of weight and receive fortified breast milk, (b) infants from developing countries who are breastfed according to the present recommendations but have low birth weight and length, and (c) children from developed countries who were enrolled in randomized controlled trials (

Anemia, a moderate public health concern among adolescents in South Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is characterized by rapid growth and development and iron requirements increase during this time. Adolescents with poor diet in early childhood and/or females with an early onset of menarche may be at greater risk for developing anemia due to the rapid depletion of iron stores in their bodies. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence and severity of anemia among school adolescents in Wonago district, Gedeo Zone, South Ethiopia. METHODS: A school based cross-sectional study was conducted among 443 randomly selected school adolescents across 1

Mode of infant feeding, eating behaviour and anthropometry in infants at 6-months of age born to obese women - a secondary analysis of the UPBEAT trial.

BACKGROUND: Maternal obesity and rapid infant weight gain have been associated with increased risk of obesity in childhood. Breastfeeding is suggested to be protective against childhood obesity, but no previous study has addressed the potential benefit of breastfeeding as a preventive method of childhood obesity amongst obese women. The primary aim of this study was to assess the relationship between mode of feeding and body composition, growth and eating behaviours in 6-month-old infants of obese women who participated in UPBEAT; a multi-centre randomised controlled trial comparing a lifestyl

Evidence for a sensitive period in the effects of early life stress on hippocampal volume.

Exposure to stress has been causally linked to changes in hippocampal volume (HV). Given that the hippocampus undergoes rapid changes in the first years of life, stressful experiences during this period may be particularly important in understanding individual differences in the development of the hippocampus. One hundred seventy-eight early adolescents (ages 9-13 years; 43% male) were interviewed regarding exposure to and age of onset of experiences of stress; the severity of each stressful event was rated by an objective panel. All participants underwent structural magnetic resonance imaging

Type and timing of childhood maltreatment and reduced visual cortex volume in children and adolescents with reactive attachment disorder.

Reactive attachment disorder (RAD) is a severe social functioning disorder associated with early childhood maltreatment where the child displays emotionally withdrawn/inhibited behaviors toward caregivers. Brain regions develop at different rates and regions undergoing rapid change may be particularly vulnerable during these times to stressors or adverse experiences. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of type and timing of childhood adversities on structural alterations in regional gray matter (GM) volume in maltreated children with RAD. High-resolution magnetic resonance imag

Structural and Maturational Covariance in Early Childhood Brain Development.

Brain structural covariance networks (SCNs) composed of regions with correlated variation are altered in neuropsychiatric disease and change with age. Little is known about the development of SCNs in early childhood, a period of rapid cortical growth. We investigated the development of structural and maturational covariance networks, including default, dorsal attention, primary visual and sensorimotor networks in a longitudinal population of 118 children after birth to 2 years old and compared them with intrinsic functional connectivity networks. We found that structural covariance of all netw

Earlier age at menarche in girls with rapid early life growth: cohort and within sibling analyses.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the article was to examine the association of early life growth with age at menarche. METHODS: Using data from a prospective birth cohort (n = 1134 women, 290 sibling sets), we assessed the association between postnatal growth at 4 months, 1 year, and 4 years and age at menarche, using generalized estimating equations and generalized linear random effects models. RESULTS: Overall, 18% of the cohort experienced early menarche (<12 years). After accounting for postnatal growth in length, faster postnatal change in weight (per 10-percentile increase) in all three periods

A decade of rapid change: Biocultural influences on child growth in highland Peru.

OBJECTIVES: In the past decade many areas of Peru have been undergoing extreme environmental, economic, and cultural change. In the highland hamlet of Chugurpampa, La Libertad, climate change has ruined harvests and led to frequent periods of migration to the coast in search of livelihood. This biocultural research examines how the changes could be affecting the growth of children who maintain residence in the highlands. METHODS: Clinical records from the early 2000s were compared to those from the early 2010s. Charts were randomly selected to record anthropometric data, netting a sample of 7

Diagnosis and imaging characteristics of a juvenile fibroadenoma in a 2-year-old patient: a case report.

Fibroadenomas are abundantly reported in the literature with several papers documenting the natural progression and clinical outcomes of thousands of cases. Juvenile fibroadenomas (also called cellular fibroadenomas) are frequently characterized by rapid growth, often described as 5-10 cm in size. They constitute approximately 7%-8% of fibroadenomas. They often measure greater than 5 cm. Pathologically, they show similar features to fibroadenomas but can resemble phyllodes. There have been few documented cases of breast masses in early childhood. Furthermore, there are scant radiology publicat

The effects of vitamin B12 supplementation in pregnancy and postpartum on growth and neurodevelopment in early childhood: Study Protocol for a Randomized Placebo Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Vitamin B12 is crucial for normal cell division and differentiation, and necessary for the development and myelination of the central nervous system. Pregnant mothers in resource poor settings are at risk for poor vitamin B12 status. Poor vitamin B12 status in infancy is linked to poor growth and neurodevelopment. Brain development starts from conception, and pregnancy is a period of rapid growth and development for the brain. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The study is an individually randomised double-blind placebo controlled trial in 800 pregnant Nepalese women randomised in a 1:1 rat
