Nutritional challenges and opportunities during the weaning period and in young childhood.

The early years of life are a period of very rapid growth and development. In this critical phase, food preferences are formed which carry over into childhood and beyond and foundations are laid for a healthy adult life. Excess energy, imbalances in macronutrient quality, and nutritional deficiencies may form inappropriate nutritional signals, leading to metabolic disturbances and affecting the obesity risk. For instance, the intake of protein and sugar-sweetened beverages in young children has been associated with an increased risk of overweight and obesity. In reality, scientific reports hav

Fetal programming of children's obesity risk.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood obesity affects nearly 17% of children and adolescents in the United States. Increasing evidence indicates that prenatal maternal stress signals influence fetal growth, child obesity, and metabolic risk. Children exhibiting catch-up growth, a rapid and dramatic increase in body size, within the first two years of life are also at an increased risk for developing metabolic disorder and obesity. We evaluate the potential role of the maternal hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) and placental axis in programming risk for child obesity. METHOD: This prospective longitudinal s

Childhood growth patterns following congenital heart disease.

INTRODUCTION: Prenatal and early postnatal growth are known to be abnormal in patients with CHD. Although adult metabolic risk is associated with growth later in childhood, little is known of childhood growth in CHD. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective data were collected on 551 patients with coarctation of the aorta, hypoplastic left heart syndrome, single ventricle physiology, tetralogy of Fallot, transposition of the great arteries, or ventricular septal defects. Weight, height, and body mass index data were converted to Z-scores. Body size at 2 years and growth between 2 and 20 years, 2 a

Growth in early life and the development of obesity by age 9 years: are there critical periods and a role for an early life stressor?

OBJECTIVE: Rapid growth, possibly occurring in critical periods in early life, may be important for the development of obesity. It is unknown whether this is influenced by postnatal exposures such as age-relevant sources of stress. Frequent house moves may be one such stressor. We aimed to examine if there is a period of growth in early life critical for the development of child obesity by age 9 years and assess the role of house moves in modifying any relationships between early life growth and obesity at age 9 years. DESIGN: Prospective Australian birth cohort study. SUBJECTS: In all, 392

Relationship between childhood growth and later outcomes.

Many studies in different settings and times provided us with enough evidence of the association between environmental exposures (mainly nutrition) during pregnancy/infancy and later health outcomes, such as adult non-communicable diseases (NCDs). An individual with a given susceptibility will continue to experience new environmental challenges (e.g. growth), and these later experiences will modulate the early ones. Children that are thin in infancy and then become larger are at greater risk for later NCD. Studies demonstrated that rapid weight gain is a strong predictor of later NCD, independ

Puberty in children born small for gestational age.

Small for gestational age (SGA) children are more prone to have precocious pubarche and exaggerated precocious adrenarche, an earlier onset of pubertal development and menarche, and faster progression of puberty than children born of appropriate for gestational age (AGA) size. The majority of studies investigating the onset of puberty in children born SGA and AGA established that, although puberty begins at an appropriate time (based on chronological age and actual height) in SGA children, onset is earlier relative to AGA children. Evaluating pubertal growth in SGA children, a more modest bone

Variation in the heritability of body mass index based on diverse twin studies: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Over the past three decades, twin studies have shown variation in the heritability of obesity. This study examined the difference of body mass index (BMI) heritability (BMI-H) by population characteristics, such as sex, age, time period of observation and average BMI, as well as by broad social-environmental factors as indicated by country-level gross domestic product (GDP) per capita and GDP growth rate. METHODS: Twin studies that reported BMI-H and were published in English from January 1990 to February 2011 after excluding those with disease, special occupations or combined her

Night time sleep macrostructure is altered in otherwise healthy 10-year-old overweight children.

OBJECTIVE: Epidemiological evidence shows an inverse relationship between sleep duration and overweight/obesity risk. However, there are few polysomnographic studies that relate the organization of sleep stages to pediatric overweight (OW). We compared sleep organization in otherwise healthy OW and normal-weight (NW) 10-year-old children. SUBJECTS: Polysomnographic assessments were performed in 37 NW and 59 OW children drawn from a longitudinal study beginning in infancy. Weight and height were used to evaluate body mass index (BMI) according to international criteria. Non-rapid eye movement

Social class variation in the predictors of rapid growth in infancy and obesity at age 3 years.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the extent to which early child nutrition, maternal antenatal lifestyle behaviours and child diet and lifestyle explain social class inequalities in the risk of rapid weight gain between birth and 3 years and obesity at age 3 years. DESIGN: A longitudinal and prospective birth cohort study. SUBJECTS: Nationally representative sample of 11,134 children and their parents followed from 9 months of age until 3 years. Child weight and maternal height and weight were measured at 9 months and 3 years and child birth weight was extracted from hospital records. Other predictors

Effects of obesity on human sexual development.

Puberty is a period of physical and psychological maturation, with long-term effects on health. During the 20(th) century, a secular trend towards earlier puberty occurred in association with improvements in nutrition. The worldwide pandemic of childhood obesity has renewed interest in the relationship between body composition in childhood and the timing and tempo of puberty. Limited evidence suggests that earlier puberty is associated with a tendency towards central fat deposition; therefore, pubertal status needs to be carefully considered in the categorization of childhood and adolescent ov

Growth in height in childhood and risk of coronary heart disease in adult men and women.

BACKGROUND: Adult height is inversely associated with the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD), but it is still unknown which phase of the human growth period is critical for the formation of this association. We investigated the association between growth in height from 7 to 13 years of age and the risk of CHD in adulthood. METHODS AND FINDINGS: The heights of almost all children born 1930 through 1976 who attended school in the Copenhagen municipality (232,063 children) were measured annually from 7 to 13 years of age. Birth weight data were available since 1936. Fatal and non-fatal CHD eve

Overweight and obesity in twenty-year-old Swedes in relation to birthweight and weight development during childhood.

AIM: To describe the frequency of overweight and obesity from birth to 20 years of age and analyse weight at 20 years of age in relation to weight and weight development during early childhood and adolescence. METHODS: A longitudinal, population-based study, which followed 496 children from birth to 20 years of age. Information about weight and height was collected from health records at child health centres and school health care. At 20 years of age, weight and height measurements were taken by one of the authors. RESULTS: At 20 years of age, 124 (25%) of the youth were obese or overweight.

Weight gain after childhood traumatic brain injury: a matter of concern.

AIM: The aim of the study was to assess weight changes after traumatic brain injury (TBI) in children and the factors influencing them. METHOD: We conducted a longitudinal observational study of children with TBI of mixed severity who were consecutively admitted to one rehabilitation department (39 children; 23 males, 16 females; median age 8y 7mo; 25th to 75th centiles 3y 7mo-11y 6mo). Weight and height before TBI were obtained from the children's records and were measured monthly for 1 year after TBI. Body mass index (BMI) and BMI z-scores were calculated, and pre-TBI values were compared w

C-type Natriuretic Peptide: a novel biomarker of steroid induced bone toxicity in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).

Impaired bone growth and mineralization, and osteonecrosis are significant and common long-term sequelae of chemotherapy for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Here we have evaluated the relationship between linear bone growth during chemotherapy for ALL and bone derived C-type Natriuretic Peptide (CNP). CNP is known to be critical to normal endochondral bone growth in both rodents and humans, and plasma concentration of the amino terminal pro CNP (NTproCNP) is strongly correlated with concurrent height velocity in children. Plasma NTproCNP and CNP were measured by radio-immunoassay

BMI development of normal weight and overweight children in the PIAMA study.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that rapid weight gain during the first year of life is associated with overweight later in life. However, results from studies exploring other critical periods for the development of overweight are inconsistent. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to investigate BMI development to assess at what ages essential differences between normal weight and overweight children occur, and to assess which age intervals the most strongly influence the risk of overweight at 8 years of age. METHODS: Longitudinal weight and height data were collected by annual questionnaires in a pop

Fetal growth and body size genes and risk of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Accumulating evidence suggests that childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) may be initiated in utero or early in the postnatal period. High birth weight (or rapid fetal growth) is associated with risk of ALL, but the mechanisms are not understood. In a population-based epidemiologic study of childhood ALL, we utilized a haplotype-based approach to assess the role of eight genes involved in fetal growth and body size regulation in 377 childhood ALL cases and 448 controls. We found significant haplotype associations with risk of childhood ALL for IGF1 among non-Hispanics and Hispanics toge

Modernization and the onset of overweight and obesity in Bougainville and Solomon Islands children: cross-sectional and longitudinal comparisons between 1966 and 1986.

This set of cross-sectional and longitudinal data from children and young adults in certain Bougainville and Solomon Islands populations undergoing rapid modernization during the period 1966-1986 reveals very different responses to essentially the same stimuli-the introduction and widespread availability of western dietary items and reductions in habitual activity. Our analyses of over 2,000 children and young adults first measured in 1966-1972, with follow-up surveys in 1968-1970 and 1985-1986, show changes in overweight/obesity in these communities have their onset around puberty, and are no

Height, age at menarche and risk of hormone receptor-positive and -negative breast cancer: a cohort study.

Associations of breast cancer overall with indicators of exposures during puberty are reasonably well characterized; however, uncertainty remains regarding the associations of height, leg length, sitting height and menarcheal age with hormone receptor-defined malignancies. Within the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition cohort, Cox proportional hazards models were used to describe the relationships of adult height, leg length and sitting height and age at menarche with risk of estrogen and progesterone receptor negative (ER-PR-) (n = 990) and ER+PR+ (n = 3,524) breast t

Rapid neonatal weight gain increases risk of childhood overweight in offspring of diabetic mothers.

AIM: Increased neonatal weight gain has been suggested as risk factor for later overweight. Offspring of diabetic mothers (ODM) have a long-term increased overweight risk. However, the role of early postnatal weight gain for later overweight has not been addressed so far in ODM. We investigated whether increased weight gain during the first 4 months is related to later overweight in ODM. METHODS: Determinants of childhood overweight and neonatal weight gain were analyzed in 152 ODM from the Kaulsdorf Cohort Study by MANOVA and regression analyses. RESULTS: Independent of birth weight, weight

Rapid growth from 12 to 23 months of life predicts obesity in a population of Pacific Island children.

BACKGROUND: Rapid growth (RG) in early childhood has been associated with increased risk of obesity. The specific intervals when risk is highest have not been well examined and may help identify modifiable risk factors. OBJECTIVE: To determine the correlation between RG in consecutive time intervals during the first 2 years of life with obesity at 4-5 years. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of children attending the largest community health center in Hawaii. Children, aged 4-5 years, with a pre-kindergarten (PreK) well-child physical examination were included; data were abstracted fro
