Association of rapid weight gain during early childhood with cardiovascular risk factors in Japanese adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Because of the lack of relevant data, we investigated the association between rapid weight gain (RWG) during early childhood and cardiovascular risk factors in Japanese adolescents. METHODS: The source population comprised 2285 adolescents aged 13 to 14 years enrolled in any public school in Fukuroi City, Japan during 2008, 2009, or 2010. Since there are no private schools in this city, almost all adolescents who lived in the city went to 1 of these schools. We obtained data on blood pressure (BP), serum lipids, and anthropometry during adolescence, as well as anthropometry at bir

Associations of intrauterine and postnatal weight and length gains with adolescent body composition: prospective birth cohort study from Brazil.

PURPOSE: Early growth patterns have been associated with subsequent obesity risk. However, findings from middle-income populations suggest that early infant growth may benefit lean mass and height rather than adiposity. We tested the hypothesis that rapid weight or length gain in different growth periods would be associated with size and body composition in adolescence, in a prospective birth cohort from southern Brazil. METHODS: Body composition was assessed in 425 adolescents (52.2% male) at 14 years. Exposures were birth weight z-score and conditional growth in weight or length for the per

Impacts of infancy rapid weight gain on 5-year childhood overweight development vary by age and sex in China.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the critical period for overweight development during early childhood by examining growth trajectory and related sex differences. METHODS: Using piecewise linear mixed models and logistic regression, we examined the effect of growth trajectory at different periods on overweight at age 4-5 by sex among 13,6 971 regularly followed children (mean: 12.2 times) during 2000-2005 in south China. RESULTS: The high-body mass index (BMI) group (>top tertile of BMI Z score at age of 4-5 years) had faster growth rates of BMI, BMI Z score, weight and height than the low-BMI gro

Life course trajectories of systolic blood pressure using longitudinal data from eight UK cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Much of our understanding of the age-related progression of systolic blood pressure (SBP) comes from cross-sectional data, which do not directly capture within-individual change. We estimated life course trajectories of SBP using longitudinal data from seven population-based cohorts and one predominantly white collar occupational cohort, each from the United Kingdom and with data covering different but overlapping age periods. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Data are from 30,372 individuals and comprise 102,583 SBP observations spanning from age 7 to 80+y. Multilevel models were fitted to e

Association between infant correlates of impulsivity--surgency (extraversion)--and early infant growth.

Increasing evidence suggests that rapid postnatal weight gain is associated with increased risks of being overweight or obese later in life and of co-morbidities, such as diabetes, the metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. In children as young as two years of age, as well as in adults, an appetitive system-linked impulsivity trait has been demonstrated to be linked with increased overweight, and postulated to act via increased food intake, through greater responsiveness to food and lower self-inhibitory control skills. In this study, we hypothesized that growth in infancy, a critical

Barriers engaging families and GPs in childhood weight management strategies.

BACKGROUND: The rapid increase in the prevalence of childhood obesity in recent years has led to inconclusive debate about the most effective way to manage the condition and the most appropriate care setting. Primary care has been suggested as a key site to identify and treat obesity in children. AIM: To identify children from general practice databases with a body mass index (BMI) categorised as 'obese', and invite them for a primary care consultation and possible referral to a specialist secondary care clinic. DESIGN AND SETTING: Targeted screening of GP practice databases for obese childr

Growth and development of overweight and obese girls.

INTRODUCTION: The pattern of development of obesity during childhood and adolescence is unclear, hindering preventive strategies. AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of this study was to investigate the differences in growth and tempo of maturation between overweight or obese and normal weight girls. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The data were obtained from 1008 schoolgirls aged 16-18 years for whom earlier data on weight and height were available. The height and body mass were measured and the BMI was calculated. Height and weight in early life were assessed by medical records review. Underweight, overweigh

Shorter sleep may be a risk factor for impaired bone mass accrual in childhood.

The purpose of the study was to investigate whether sleep duration during early childhood was associated with fat mass and bone mineral content (BMC). BMC and fat mass were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry in children (n=336) aged 4-12 yr. Sleep was quantified according to parental report of hours slept at night and napping. The relationship between sleep pattern and body composition was tested using analysis of variance including confounding factors. Based on the sample distribution, children were grouped into tertiles of sleep duration. BMC was greater in children with longer sle

Cow milk consumption, insulin-like growth factor-I, and human biology: a life history approach.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the life history consequences of cow milk consumption at different stages in early life (prenatal to adolescence), especially with regard to linear growth and age at menarche and the role of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) in mediating a relationship among milk, growth and development, and long-term biological outcomes. METHODS: United States National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 1999 to 2004 and review of existing literature. RESULTS: The literature tends to support milk's role in enhancing growth early in life (prior to age 5 years),

Early markers of adult obesity: a review.

The purpose of this review was to evaluate factors in early childhood (≤5 years of age) that are the most significant predictors of the development of obesity in adulthood. Factors of interest included exposures/insults in the prenatal period, infancy and early childhood, as well as other socio-demographic variables such as socioeconomic status (SES) or birth place that could impact all three time periods. An extensive electronic and systematic search initially resulted in 8,880 citations, after duplicates were removed. Specific inclusion and exclusion criteria were set, and following two scre

Short but catching up: statural growth among native Amazonian Bolivian children.

The ubiquity and consequences of childhood growth stunting (<-2 SD in height-for-age Z score, HAZ) in rural areas of low-income nations has galvanized research into the reversibility of stunting, but the shortage of panel data has hindered progress. Using panel data from a native Amazonian society of foragers-farmers in Bolivia (Tsimane'), we estimate rates of catch-up growth for stunted children. One hundred forty-six girls and 158 boys 2 < or = age < or = 7 were measured annually during 2002-2006. Annual Delta height in cm and in HAZ were regressed separately against baseline stunting and co

Early overnutrition results in early-onset arcuate leptin resistance and increased sensitivity to high-fat diet.

Childhood obesity increases the risk of adult obesity and diabetes, suggesting that early overnutrition permanently programs altered energy and glucose homeostasis. In the present studies, we used a mouse model to investigate whether early overnutrition increases susceptibility to obesity and insulin resistance in response to a high-fat diet (HFD). Litters from Swiss Webster dams were culled to three [chronic postnatal overnutrition (CPO)] or 10 (control) pups and then weaned onto standard chow at postnatal day (P) 23. At 6 wk of age, a subset of mice was placed on HFD, and glucose and insulin

Body size and growth from birth to 2 years and risk of overweight at 7-9 years.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the potential association between growth during the first 2 years of life and the risk of overweight in childhood. METHODS: Overweight status of 1 582 French children aged 7-9 years in 2000 was estimated, using measured weight and height data collected retrospectively. Overweight was estimated using measured weight and height. Linear mixed models identified six growth parameters associated with later overweight: weight, length and body mass index (BMI) attained at 1 year, average monthly weight and length gain, and average variation in monthly weight gain. RESULTS: In th

Diagnosis of a trend towards obesity in preschool children: a longitudinal study.

The study was planned to determine identifiable starting points of a trend towards obesity and the influence of variables in preschool children aged 0 to 6 years. In this longitudinal follow-up study, 102 children were enrolled. Anthropometric measurements such as weight-height centiles (specific for gender and age group), weight-height growth velocities, and body mass indices were taken annually and compared within each group from birth to 6 years. Family history and lifestyle variables were also recorded and compared. Our study has shown that gender does not affect the trend towards obesity.

Dental evidence for ontogenetic differences between modern humans and Neanderthals.

Humans have an unusual life history, with an early weaning age, long childhood, late first reproduction, short interbirth intervals, and long lifespan. In contrast, great apes wean later, reproduce earlier, and have longer intervals between births. Despite 80 y of speculation, the origins of these developmental patterns in Homo sapiens remain unknown. Because they record daily growth during formation, teeth provide important insights, revealing that australopithecines and early Homo had more rapid ontogenies than recent humans. Dental development in later Homo species has been intensely debate

Infancy weight gain predicts childhood body fat and age at menarche in girls.

CONTEXT: Rapid postnatal weight gain has been associated with subsequent increased childhood adiposity. However, the contribution of rapid weight gain during specific infancy periods is not clear. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine which periods of infancy weight gain are related to childhood adiposity and also to age at menarche in UK girls. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A total of 2715 girls from a prospective UK birth cohort study participated in the study. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Routinely measured weights and lengths at ages 2, 9, and 19 months were extracted from the local child hea

Self-regulation and rapid weight gain in children from age 3 to 12 years.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the extent to which self-regulatory capacities, measured behaviorally at ages 3 and 5 years, were linked to rapid weight gain in children from age 3 to 12 years. Self-regulation failure, or the inability to control an impulse or behavior, has been implicated as a mechanism in the development of overweight. DESIGN: Prospective longitudinal cohort study. SETTING: Home and laboratory-based settings in 10 sites across the United States. PARTICIPANTS: Data were drawn from 1061 children as part of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Ch

Growth differences by age of menarche in African American and White girls.

BACKGROUND: Because of the rapid increases in childhood obesity coupled with decreases in the median age of menarche, there is interest in how growth (body mass index [BMI] and height) in childhood may be associated with timing of menarche. OBJECTIVES: Two research questions were addressed in this article: (a) Within each race, at what ages were BMI and height differences evident among the early-, the mid-, and the late-onset groups? And (b) within each timing group, at what ages were BMI and height differences evident between White and African American girls? METHODS: The mother/child files

Antiepileptic drugs and hormones in children.

For physicians treating epileptic patients, endocrine disorders are of major importance. This is even more important during a stage of rapid growth, weight gain, skeletal and genital maturation under the effects of several hormones, as in childhood. There is a relatively complex and multifaceted relationship between antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), epilepsy and the neuroendocrine system. It is difficult to tell whether the changes in neuroendocrine system are due to epilepsy itself or due to the use of AEDs; however, it is a fact that some of these changes are, at least to some extent, drug-related

Does the secular increase in body mass in children contribute to the increasing incidence of type 1 diabetes?

BACKGROUND: The incidence of type 1 diabetes in children has increased in most developed countries after World War II, and simultaneously, normal children have experienced accelerated weight gain and growth. OBJECTIVE: We set out to explore whether any relationship can be seen between the incidence of childhood type 1 diabetes and changes in linear growth and body mass in Finnish children over a 12-yr period. METHODS: Incidence rates for type 1 diabetes in Finnish children under the age of 15 yr were obtained from the National Central Drug Registry. The rates were averaged for 3-yr intervals
