Protective Factors Predict Resilient Outcomes in Clinical High-Risk Youth with the Highest Individualized Psychosis Risk Scores.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Studying individuals at Clinical High Risk (CHR) for psychosis provides an opportunity to examine protective factors that predict resilient outcomes. Here, we present a model for the study of protective factors in CHR participants at the very highest risk for psychotic conversion based on the Psychosis Risk Calculator. STUDY DESIGN: CHR participants (N = 572) from NAPLS3 were assessed on the Risk Calculator. Those who scored in the top half of the distribution and had 2 years of follow-up (N = 136) were divided into those who did not convert to psychosis (resilient,

Characterizing short-term linear and nonlinear heart rate variability in typically developing children and adolescents.

Linear heart rate variability (HRV) quantifies heart rate (HR) changes due to stochastic processes while nonlinear HRV captures the complexity of the HR structure. Although linear HRV in childhood and adolescence has been explored, little is known about nonlinear HRV. The present study characterized short-term linear and nonlinear HRV in typically-developing children (7-12 years, n = 35) and adolescents (13-17 years, n = 29). HRV during quiet rest was assessed using a three-lead electrocardiogram for 5-min and analyzed using linear (time and frequency domain) and nonlinear (Poincáre analysis,

Hippocampal volume and persistent distressing psychotic-like experiences across early adolescence: the moderating role of physical activity.

BACKGROUND: Persistent distressing psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) in youth are associated with cognitive, functional, and psychiatric impairments. Reduced hippocampal volume (HV) is a nonspecific neurodevelopmental risk marker across psychiatric disorders. While physical activity is associated with better mental health, the characteristics of physical activity most relevant to these outcomes remain unclear. This study examined whether HV is associated with persistent distressing PLEs in early adolescence and whether physical activity, particularly team sports, moderates this relationship.

Add Health becomes an aging study: conceptualization, history and Wave VI design, response, and descriptive health data.

OBJECTIVES: This paper describes the history and previous research contributions of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) and provides an overview of the recently completed Wave VI (average age 44 years) design and content. We provide a comparison of basic Wave VI data with two major U.S. cross-sectional health studies. We then report descriptive distributions for several survey-based health measures in Wave VI, both for the overall cohort as well as for subgroups. Finally, we discuss ways that Add Health data can be used to make important contributions to

Evaluating Computerised Assessment of Motor Imitation (CAMI) for identifying autism-specific difficulties not observed for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder or neurotypical development.

BACKGROUND: Reliable and specific biomarkers that can distinguish autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) from commonly co-occurring attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are lacking, causing misses and delays in diagnosis, and reducing access to interventions and quality of life. AIMS: To examine whether an innovative, brief (1-min), videogame method called Computerised Assessment of Motor Imitation (CAMI), can identify ASD-specific imitation differences compared with neurotypical children and children with ADHD. METHOD: This cross-sectional study used CAMI alongside standardised parent-

Adapting to the Disconnection: An Examination of School Alienation and Adolescent Gun Carrying.

OBJECTIVE: As school shootings and youth gun violence continue to rise in the United States, it is imperative to identify risk factors linked to gun carrying among adolescents. This study examines the relationship between perceived school alienation and the likelihood of adolescents carrying a gun to school. Specifically, it tests whether school alienation increases adolescent inclination to carry a gun to school. METHODS: This study used an all-male sample from waves I (1994-1995) and II (1996) of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) with a final analyti

The contribution of genetic and environmental influences underlying disordered eating to exposure to weight-conscious peers.

BACKGROUND: Girls with predispositions for disordered eating (DE) may select into weight-conscious peer groups (i.e. peer groups that emphasize body weight/shape). However, factors driving selection into these peer groups remain unknown, as genetic and/or environmental predisposition to DE may lead girls to select weight-conscious peers. To explore what may drive selection, the present study investigated whether genetic or shared environmental influences underlie associations between DE and exposure to weight-conscious peers and whether effects differ by pubertal status. METHODS: Participants

Association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level and sex steroid hormone among 6-19-year old children and adolescents based on NHANES 2013-2016 data.

INTRODUCTION: Recent pediatric growth research is increasingly examining serum 25(OH)D and sex hormone interactions. While 25(OH)D is crucial for regulation of skeletal health and calcium-phosphorus homeostasis, sex hormones direct pubertal onset and maturation. Given that emerging evidence has revealed intricate 25(OH)D-sex hormone interplay in child development, the current research evaluates potential correlations of sex hormone profiles with 25(OH)D among 6-19-year old children and adolescents. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study utilized 2013-2016 NHANES data. Participants

Validation of the Multiracial Youth Socialization Brief (MY-Soc-B) Scale with adolescents.

The present study validates a brief version of the Multiracial Youth Socialization Scale, the MY-Soc-B, which assesses Multiracial youths' experiences of receiving messages from their caregivers about race and culture. Using a sample of 318 diverse Multiracial American adolescents (Mage = 16.01; SD = 1.30), the original 62 items were reduced to 24 items via an examination of confirmatory factor analyses and conceptual clarity and fit of item content. The model fit strongly supported retaining the eight-factor structure from the original full version. Validity and reliability of the eight subsc

Auxology - an update 2025.

Growth is a dynamic process and a mirror of health. Documenting child and adolescent growth includes careful, and if possible, longitudinal recordings of height, weight, and indicators of the state of maturity. Measurements should be translated into centiles or z-scores. Changes in height z-scores are related to the progress in maturation, and sensitive to growth arrests and catch-up growth. Heritability studies and genome-wide association studies have traditionally been applied to assess the intrinsic regulators of growth. Nutritional, environmental and socio-economic factors are usually cons
