An investigation of the contribution of different turn speeds during standing turns in individuals with and without Parkinson's disease.

Issues around turning can impair daily tasks and trigger episodes of freezing of gait in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). Slow speeds associated with aging produce a more en-bloc movement strategy which have been linked with falls while turning. However, the influence of speed of turning on the complex whole-body coordination considering eye movements, turning kinematics, and stepping characteristics during turning has not been examined. The aim of this study was to investigate if individuals with PD have a different response to changes in turning speed compared to healthy older adul

Unravelling delayed therapy escape after thalamic deep brain stimulation for essential tremor? - Additional clinical and neuroimaging evidence.

BACKGROUND: Delayed therapy escape after thalamic deep brain stimulation (DBS) for essential tremor is a serious yet frequent condition. It is often difficult to detect this process at onset due to its gradual evolution. OBJECTIVE: Here we aim to identify clinical and neuroimaging hallmarks of delayed therapy escape. METHODS: We retrospectively studied operationalized and quantitative analyses of tremor and gait, as well as [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET of 12 patients affected by therapy escape. All examinations were carried out with activated DBS (ON) and 72 h after deactivation (OFF72h

Impact of uterine malformations on pregnancy and neonatal outcomes of IVF/ICSI-frozen embryo transfer.

STUDY QUESTION: What is the impact of uterine malformations on reproductive and neonatal outcomes of IVF/ICSI-frozen embryo transfer? SUMMARY ANSWER: Unification defective uteri are associated with poorer neonatal outcomes including higher preterm delivery rate and lower birthweight, and septate uteri are associated with worse fertility outcomes including higher miscarriage and lower live birth rates (LBRs). WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Several studies have investigated the negative effects of uterine malformations on pregnancy outcomes. However, an all-round and definitive conclusion has not been

Folic acid supplementation and malaria susceptibility and severity among people taking antifolate antimalarial drugs in endemic areas.

BACKGROUND: Description of the condition Malaria, an infectious disease transmitted by the bite of female mosquitoes from several Anopheles species, occurs in 87 countries with ongoing transmission (WHO 2020). The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that, in 2019, approximately 229 million cases of malaria occurred worldwide, with 94% occurring in the WHO's African region (WHO 2020). Of these malaria cases, an estimated 409,000 deaths occurred globally, with 67% occurring in children under five years of age (WHO 2020). Malaria also negatively impacts the health of women during pregnancy,

Twelve Weeks of a Staged Balance and Strength Training Program Improves Muscle Strength, Proprioception, and Clinical Function in Patients with Isolated Posterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries.

Ligament reconstruction is indicated in patients with an isolated posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injury who fail conservative treatment. To eliminate the need for PCL reconstruction, an ideal rehabilitation program is important for patients with an isolated PCL injury. The purpose of this study was to investigate the improvement in functional outcome, proprioception, and muscle strength after a Both Sides Up (BOSU) ball was used in a balance combined with strength training program in patients with an isolated PCL injury. Ten patients with isolated PCL injuries were recruited to receive a 12

Stretch reflex changes in ACL-deficient individuals and healthy controls during normal and surprise landings.

No studies in ACL-D individuals have examined neuromuscular adaptations during landing from a jump where an unexpected mechanical event changes the pre-programmed course of movement. The purpose of this study was to compare pre- and post-landing muscle activation in ACL-D individuals and uninjured controls during normal and surprise landings. Nineteen ACL-D and 17 uninjured volunteered. Participants performed repeated single leg landings from 30 and 15 cm heights. During 15 cm landings, a single surprise landing was performed where participants unexpectedly fell through a false surface at 15 c

Erlangen Score as a tool to predict progression from mild cognitive impairment to dementia in Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: The previously described and validated Erlangen Score (ES) algorithm enables interpretation of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease (AD), ordering them on an ordinal scale: from neurochemically normal (ES = 0) through improbable AD (ES = 1), possible AD (ES = 2 or 3), to probable AD (ES = 4). Here we assess the accuracy of the ES in predicting hazards of progression from the mild cognitive impairment (MCI) stage of AD to the dementia stage of the disease (Alzheimer's disease dementia (ADD)) in a novel, single-center cohort. METHODS: Baseline CSF biomarke

Characterizing slip-like responses during gait using an entire support surface perturbation: Comparisons to previously established slip methods.

BACKGROUND: The characteristics of experimentally induced slips (low-friction surfaces and non-motorized platforms) in laboratory settings are influenced by participant gait velocity, contact surface area, and level of friction between the foot and surface. However, motorized platforms that could account for these factors during slip-like paradigms have not been extensively used. RESEARCH QUESTION: How does slip-like perturbations evoked via a motorized platform change gait characteristics and postural stability during overground walking? METHODS: Ten healthy young adults performed 4 overgro

Cognitive impairment in patients with end-stage renal disease: Accelerated brain aging?

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease exhibits a prominent premature aging phenotype in many different organ systems, including the brain. Nevertheless, a comprehensive characterization of brain aging in non-demented patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is lacking and it remains unclear if the collective changes of cognitive functions and brain structures in ESRD is compatible with aging. METHODS: We compared 56 non-demented, independently living dialysis patients (mean age 59.4 ± 11.0 years; mean dialysis vintage of 5.9 years) and 60 non-dialysis controls on a battery of neuropsychologi

An intelligent warning model for early prediction of cardiac arrest in sepsis patients.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis-associated cardiac arrest is a common issue with the low survival rate. Early prediction of cardiac arrest can provide the time required for intervening and preventing its onset in order to reduce mortality. Several studies have been conducted to predict cardiac arrest using machine learning. However, no previous research has used machine learning for predicting cardiac arrest in adult sepsis patients. Moreover, the potential of some techniques, including ensemble algorithms, has not yet been addressed in improving the prediction outcomes. It is required to find methods for

Pathogenicity comparison of duck Tembusu virus in different aged Cherry Valley breeding ducks.

BACKGROUND: Although several studies have revealed that the sensitivity of ducklings to duck Tembusu virus (DTMUV) was related to age, however, DTMUV was originally isolated from egg-laying ducks, and the ovary was the target organ of this virus. Cherry Valley breeding ducks aged 15- and 55-week-old (they are reserve breeding ducks and the normal egg-laying breeding ducks, respectively) were infected with DTMUV, using intramuscular injection, to study the effect of age-related difference on the pathogenicity of DTMUV in breeding ducks. RESULTS: Examinations of clinical symptoms, gross and mic
