Hearing loss, hearing-aid use, and mortality risk: individual participant data meta-analysis of population-based studies from Australia, Iceland, and the USA and a replication study from Norway.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss is associated with poorer health, depression, cognitive decline, and perhaps, with increased mortality risk. Whether hearing aids ameliorate this association is not well understood. We conducted a meta-analysis with a replication study to examine associations between hearing loss, current use of hearing aids, and mortality. METHODS: Hearing threshold data, all-cause mortality, and cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related mortality (available across datasets) were analysed using individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis of three combined population-based studies: Blu

Novel Systemic Inflammatory Indices (SII and SIRI) as Mediators Between BMI and Hearing Loss.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the associations between body mass index (BMI) and hearing loss (HL), and to explore the mediating role of inflammation using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). METHODS: A cohort of 5489 participants aged ≥20 years from six NHANES cycles (2005-2012 and 2015-2018) was evaluated. Linear regression analysis was used to assess the relationships between BMI and HL. Three models were developed: (1) the association between BMI and low-frequency (LF) HL and speech-frequency (SF) HL; (2) the association between BMI and inflam

Prevalence and risk factors of hearing impairment in older Singaporeans: a population-based study.

INTRODUCTION: We investigated the prevalence and risk factors of hearing impairment (HI) and significant hearing impairment (SHI) in a multi-ethnic older Asian population. METHODS: We included 2,494 adults aged ≥60 years from a population-based study. Hearing was evaluated using a SHOEBOX portable audiometer, with any HI defined as a pure-tone average hearing threshold >25 dB and SHI defined as >40 dB, based on the better-hearing ear. Sociodemographic, lifestyle and clinical characteristics were collected via a standardised clinical examination and validated questionnaires. Weighted prevalenc

Clinical Practice Guideline: Tinnitus Update.

OBJECTIVE: Tinnitus is the perception of sound without an external source. More than 50 million people in the United States have reported experiencing tinnitus, resulting in an estimated prevalence of 10% to 15% in adults. The focus of this guideline is on tinnitus that is both bothersome and persistent (lasting 6 months or longer), which often negatively affects the patient's quality of life. The target audience for the guideline is any clinician, including allied health professionals, involved in managing patients with tinnitus. The target patient population is limited to adults (18 years an

Multi-sequence MRI signal intensity ratios as candidate imaging correlates for audiovestibular dysfunction in vestibular schwannoma.

INTRODUCTION: Vestibular schwannoma (VS) typically induces gradual sensorineural hearing impairment and vestibular dysfunction. Nevertheless, clinically applicable non-invasive candidate imaging markers capable of reflecting pathological alterations within the inner ear have not yet been well established. The present study sought to systematically investigate the correlative relationships between labyrinth signal intensity ratios acquired from multi-sequence inner ear magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and audiovestibular functional deficits in patients diagnosed with VS. METHODS: A total of 22

Evaluating the effect of spectacle correction for refractive errors and presbyopia on cognitive function in rural older adults in China: protocol for a randomised, parallel-group, superiority trial.

BACKGROUND: Vision impairment and mild cognitive impairment are highly prevalent in ageing rural populations of low- and middle-income countries. Observational studies suggest that vision correction may slow cognitive decline, but robust causal evidence-particularly from rural China-is lacking, despite an ongoing randomised controlled trial (RCT) in India. Our RCT will evaluate whether providing near and/or distance vision correction can slow cognitive decline among older adults in rural China, generating context-specific evidence to guide national policy and global healthy ageing strategies.

Relative Roles of Middle Ear Bulla Volume and Eustachian Tube Function in Diving-related Barotrauma: An Experimental Pressure Chamber Study in Guinea Pigs.

HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that isolated changes in middle ear air volume do not increase the risk of diving-related middle ear barotrauma, and that Eustachian tube function is the primary determinant of barotrauma development. BACKGROUND: The relative contributions of middle ear air volume and Eustachian tube function to the development of diving-related middle ear barotrauma remain controversial. This first experimental comparative study aimed to differentiate the effects of middle ear air volume alteration and Eustachian tube function on barotrauma in guinea pigs exposed to high pressure.

Does Obesity Predispose Patients to Superior Semicircular Canal Dehiscence?

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) is an otologic condition characterized by a bony roof defect of the superior semicircular canal, which can result in auditory and vestibular symptoms. Given the proposed associations between elevated intracranial pressure and SSCD development, as well as the established relationship between obesity and intracranial hypertension, we hypothesized that a higher body mass index (BMI) would be associated with an increased radiographic prevalence of SSCD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated consecutive adult patients who underwen

'Better Ear' Self-Perception Aligns with Audiometry: Insights from Machine-Learning Modeling.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Accurate self-perception of interaural hearing asymmetry is crucial for clinical decision-making and communication strategies, yet the relationship between objective audiometric patterns and subjective awareness remains poorly characterized. Using nationally representative data from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, this study employed a machine learning approach to model the probability that an individual's self-reported "better-hearing" ear matches the audiometrically defined one. METHODS: A Light Gradient Boosting Machine classifier was train

An algorithm underlying directional hearing in fish.

Humans and other land vertebrates localize sound by comparing the signals in each ear. Even though these differences are virtually absent underwater, fish are still able to sense the direction of sound. In 1975, Arie Schuijf proposed that this ability could arise from a comparison of the particle motion phase and the pressure phase of sound, a prediction that was recently confirmed experimentally for near-field sounds. However, in natural environments, sounds arrive from variable distances, altering the motion-pressure-phase relationship. Thus, directional hearing and distance hearing are pote
