Standardized quantum transistor block enables differentiable learning on gait dynamics.

We introduce the Quantum Transistor (QT), a standardized variational quantum building block inspired by the operating-point and gain semantics of classical transistors. The QT is specified as a two-qubit template (gate g, channel t), but the experiments reported here instantiate the non-entangling special case in which g is deterministically prepared in [Formula: see text] and is not reused; consequently, the controlled-[Formula: see text] bias reduces to an unconditional single-qubit [Formula: see text] on the channel qubit t. In this instantiation the QT implements an analytically tractable,

Determining the influence of video-based benchmarking (VBB) on examiner variability in objective structured clinical exams (OSCE): The Align study.

INTRODUCTION: Reducing examiner variability in Objective Structured Clinical Exams (OSCEs) is a priority within clinical performance assessment. In contrast to typical OSCE examiner training, video-based benchmarking (VBB) involves examiners scoring videos a/from their specific station b/shortly before the OSCE and then reflecting on and discussing scores/justifications agreed by an expert panel. Whilst realist evaluation has described mechanisms and contexts by which VBB may operate, VBB's overall efficacy is unknown. METHODS: We performed a multi-centre (12 UK medical schools) stratified ra

Phase-contingent resilience effects in multilingual medical students: a cross-sectional examination of student demands-resources theory.

INTRODUCTION: The Student Demands-Resources (SDR) theory proposes that psychological and environmental resources may become more relevant as situational demands increase. This mechanism remains underexamined in medical students. We assessed whether resilience and language proficiency were associated with academic engagement across training phases in a multilingual medical cohort. METHODS: We surveyed 422 medical students at an international medical school (May-September 2024). Hierarchical multiple regression modeled academic engagement (UWES-9S) as a function of psychological resilience (BRS

Pain at the end of life in patients with cancer: a population-based study on prevalence, relief, and the role of pain assessment.

BACKGROUND: Pain is common in advanced cancer, and its assessment is recognized as crucial for effective management. However, real-world evidence on pain prevalence, relief, and the impact of structured pain assessment across cancer types at the end of life remains limited. METHODS: We analyzed data from 215,317 patients who died from cancer reported to the Swedish Register of Palliative Care (2011-2023). Data are based on validated end-of-life questionnaires completed by healthcare providers after the patient's death. Patient characteristics and provider-reported pain outcomes (prevalence of

Specific and shared mechanisms mediating pain intensity and functional outcomes in chronic neck pain.

BACKGROUND: To date, very few studies have used mediation analysis to explore the reasons why people with chronic neck pain improve after physical therapy intervention involving manual therapy or exercise. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate which specific mechanisms (mobility, pain modulation and endurance) and shared mechanisms (self-efficacy, working alliance, engagement, fear, and positive coping) mediated the effects of treatment on clinical outcomes at 4-weeks and 6-months in individuals with chronic neck pain. METHODS: The study incorporated planned indirect‑only mediation analyses to evaluate bo

[A systematic study of first pharmacological work on origins of Chinese medicinal materials using modern scientific nomenclature: Catalogus Medicamentorum Sinensium].

Published in 1856, Catalogus Medicamentorum Sinensium stands as the earliest known modern pharmacological work in existence. Compiled by the Russian scholar Alexander Tatarinov during the 19th century, this groundbreaking study systematically documented and identified the botanical origins of 495 Chinese medicinal materials procured from Beijing, supplemented with plant specimens collected in China. It represents the first application of modern scientific nomenclature, combining Latin binomial names with specified medicinal parts, for the systematic classification of Chinese medicinal material

The Adverse Childhood Experiences Paradigm and Forensic/Correctional Populations: A Scoping Review.

As adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are increasingly referenced in criminology, several factors question the salience of ACEs to forensic and correctional populations in both the juvenile and adult criminal justice systems. Here, our scoping review of 99 studies examines the ACEs paradigm and its application to forensic/correctional populations by (1) synthesizing research on ACEs among diverse forensic/correctional populations, particularly youth but also among adults for whom childhood and adolescent adversity has sentencing implications, (2) highlighting intervening processes which medi

Nicotine Effects on Vestibular Function in Pilot Selection.

INTRODUCTION: An optimal spatial orientation is essential for pilots. Therefore, pilot applicants in the Royal Danish Air Force undergo various ear-nose-throat evaluations. It is recommended to avoid alcohol for a minimum of 24 h before evaluation. No recommendation has been made regarding nicotine and, with the increasing availability of nicotine through pouches and other products, it is therefore relevant to examine its impact on vestibular function, particularly on nystagmus, which plays a key role in clinical vestibular assessment. METHODS: We conducted a structured literature search usin

Study of topical anaesthetic for paediatric laser procedures (STAPLE): a protocol for a feasibility and pilot randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous vascular anomalies and scars can cause significant physical and psychosocial difficulties for children, but can be ameliorated with pulsed dye laser (PDL) and neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet (Nd:YAG) laser treatment. Given that multiple rounds of treatment are often required, and that the procedures are painful, achieving adequate analgesia is imperative in this setting. Paediatric procedural pain management guidelines suggest that multimodal non-pharmacological and pharmacological analgesia should be used for such procedures; however, the place of topical anae

Magnetocardiography in diagnosis of MINOCA: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Currently, there is a paucity of accurate, convenient, rapid, and efficient diagnostic approaches for myocardial infarction with non-obstructive coronary arteries (MINOCA) in patients who have undergone coronary angiography (CAG) or coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) confirming non-obstructive coronary arteries, particularly when the ECG is normal or non-diagnostic. Given that MINOCA is pathologically characterized by myocardial ischemia and abnormal local electrical activity, magnetocardiography (MCG), which can sensitively detect changes in myocardial depolarization

Isolated Proximal Femoral Valgus Osteotomy for Hinge Abduction Improves Femoroacetabular Relationship in Patients With Perthes Disease.

BACKGROUND: Proximal femoral valgus osteotomy is a recognized salvage procedure for managing hinge abduction in Perthes disease. Although proximal femoral valgus osteotomy aims to improve joint congruency, previous studies have been limited by heterogeneous methodologies and concomitant procedures, making it difficult to determine its isolated effect. Furthermore, no study of which we are aware has specifically examined how proximal femoral valgus osteotomy influences acetabular development or lower limb alignment over time. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Is isolated proximal femoral valgus osteotom

Defining Inactivity of Juvenile Spondyloarthropathies: Delphi Study Among Pediatric Rheumatology Academy (PeRA) From Türkiye.

INTRODUCTION: Juvenile spondyloarthropathies (JSpA) are a group of chronic inflammatory diseases that differ in their clinical features and course from adult spondyloarthropathies and other subtypes of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Therefore, defining disease inactivity in JSpA requires specific criteria. This Delphi study aimed to establish a national consensus on its core clinical, laboratory, and radiological domains. METHODS: A total of 27 pediatric rheumatologists participated in the Delphi survey, conducted in two rounds. Participants were asked multiple-choice and Likert-type qu

In Vitro Hip Biomechanical Positioning Device Integrated with Clinical Imaging.

While in vitro hip biomechanics are well-studied, the lack of radiolucent testing platforms makes it difficult to validate joint mechanics at specified positions against gold-standard clinical imaging without introducing metal artifacts. We developed a low-cost, non-ferrous, and radiolucent testing fixture designed to bridge this gap by aligning benchtop loading with International Society of Biomechanics (ISB) recommendations. The testing device and a dedicated drill guide were 3D printed from tough polylactic acid (PLA), enabling controlled flexion-extension and internal-external rotation (IR
