Utilization of weight management treatment and subsequent cardiovascular events among patients with breast cancer.

PURPOSE: Overweight and obese breast cancer (BC) survivors face higher risks of recurrence and all-cause mortality, including from cardiovascular disease (CVD). Weight management therapy (WMT) may reduce cardiovascular events (CVE). We assessed trends in WMT in BC survivors and evaluated rates of CVE. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the MarketScan Database, including overweight and obese patients (18-95 years) with invasive BC (2009 -2021), who underwent breast surgery. Exclusions were prior bariatric surgery or secondary cancers. Patients were categorized by weight s

Age inconsistent brain atrophy following post cardiac arrest brain injury (PCABI): case report and review of literature.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Age-inconsistent brain atrophy refers to brain shrinkage that is not proportional to chronological age. This case report is first to report a young patient who developed age-inconsistent brain atrophy due to post cardiac arrest brain injury (PCABI). Due to limitations in the available data, we report our experience and novel magnetic resonance (MR) imaging changes in the brain over the course of 2 months. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 28-year-old woman who developed sudden cardiac arrest during a routine cesarean section, with loss of consciousness for

Adiposity and the first-onset of diagnosed mental illnesses: a population-based cohort study of 10 million UK adults.

BACKGROUND: Whether both high and low BMI are risk factors for mental illnesses is unclear, especially serious mental illnesses. Experimental evidence suggests that metabolic pathways might mediate the association, but this is uncertain. To examine associations between BMI and the first-onset of diagnosed mental illnesses with assessment for mediating effects of cardiometabolic disorders. METHODS: Using the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink (2000-2022), individuals ≥ 18 years with a recorded BMI assessment were included. Diagnosed mental illnesses were ascertained via clinical diagnoses,

Effects of sevoflurane inhalation anesthesia versus propofol intravenous anesthesia on postoperative cognitive function in patients with malignant tumors: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Both propofol and sevoflurane, commonly used anesthetics, may cause brain oxygen metabolism abnormalities potentially linked to postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD), though their precise relationship with POCD requires further study. OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate sevoflurane inhalation versus propofol intravenous anesthesia effects on postoperative cognitive function in cancer patients. METHODS: We searched PubMed, EMbase, Cochrane Library, CBM, CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, and Chinese Biomedical Literature databases (from January 10, 2023) using keywords including Anaesthes

Identification of atopic dermatitis-associated diseases based on the National health and nutrition examination survey (NHANES) 2013-2018.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is the most common chronic inflammatory skin disease. Massive cohort studies revealed that AD was associated with allergic diseases, inflammatory diseases, autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and mental disorders. We comprehensively and systematically analyzed the correlation between AD and diseases to identify AD-associated diseases (ADADs). We involved 17,924 individuals from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (2013-2018) dataset, and analyzed the correlation between AD and 422 diseases classified by International Classification of

An Unusual Case of Anterior Mediastinal Cystic Echinococcosis Successfully Resolved with Multidisciplinary Approach.

Human echinococcosis is a zoonotic disease caused by accidental ingestion of tapeworm eggs of the genus Echinococcus, shed in the feces of animal definitive host. In the human duodenum, these eggs release oncospheres, which penetrate the intestinal wall and via the bloodstream reach the liver-the most common site for development of cysts. However, it is important to remember that any other organ can be affected via the bloodstream, due to larvae size. In Europe, the most diagnostically relevant species are Echinococcus granulosus, with a median incidence of 0.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, a

Lipomatous hypertrophy of cardiac interatrial septum: A case report.

RATIONALE: Lipomatous hypertrophy (LH) of the cardiac interatrial septum is a rare benign lesion of the heart, usually described as a nonencapsulated mass arising from the atrial septum, with common symptoms, such as atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia, and syncope. It is very important to detect LH as early as possible; however, this can be difficult due to the rarity of the condition. PATIENT CONCERNS: Here, we report the unique case of a 60-year-old-man who was found to be unconscious in his car by a paramedic. The patient was declared dead after a preliminary diagnosis of un

Intestinal Amoebiasis Associated With Inflammatory Bowel Diseases: An Eight-Year Retrospective Study at Ibn Sina University Hospital, Rabat, Morocco (2014-2022).

Introduction Amoebiasis, caused by the protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica, remains a significant public health concern in our country due to its endemicity. It poses a unique challenge in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), where its symptoms often mimic disease flare-ups, leading to diagnostic uncertainty and potential delays in appropriate management. The overlap in clinical presentation between amoebiasis and IBD exacerbations can result in misdiagnosis or inappropriate treatment, further complicating patient outcomes. In this context, our study was designed to explore and

Psychosocial dimensions of pain disparities in youth diagnosed with unspecified abdominal pain in an emergency department.

Diagnosis ambiguity, paired with pain care inequities experienced by marginalized groups may increase risk for ongoing pain and impairment in children diagnosed with unspecified abdominal pain in the pediatric emergency department (PED). This cross-sectional study examined psychological, caregiver, cultural, and socio-ecological factors associated with pain-related impairment in an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse population diagnosed with unspecified abdominal pain in a PED. The sample included 111 children 8-17 years old (59.8 % female, 72.7 % Latinx) and their caregivers. Exclusion

Misclassification of opioid-involvement in drug-related overdose deaths in the United States: A scoping review.

PURPOSE: Most drug-related deaths in the United States (US) in 2022 involved opioids. However, methodological challenges in overdose surveillance may contribute to underestimation of opioid involvement in the overdose crisis. This scoping review aimed to synthesize existing literature to examine the breadth and contributing sources of misclassification of opioid-related overdose deaths. METHODS: In October 2022, we searched PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus for studies on overdose surveillance, death certificates, and medicolegal death investigation (MDI) systems in the US published in 2013-

Use of patient-reported global assessment measures in clinical trials of chronic pain treatments: ACTTION systematic review and considerations.

Establishing clinically meaningful changes in pain experiences remains important for clinical trials of chronic pain treatments. Regulatory guidance and pain measurement initiatives have recommended including patient-reported global assessment measures (eg, Patient-Global Impression of Change [PGIC]) to aid interpretation of within-patient differences in domain-specific clinical trial outcomes (eg, pain intensity). The objectives of this systematic review were to determine the frequency of global assessment measures inclusion, types of measures, domains assessed, number and types of response o

Characteristics of deceased subjects transported to a postmortem imaging center due to unusual death related to epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with epilepsy have high risk of experiencing uncommon causes of death. This study aimed to evaluate patients who underwent unusual deaths related to epilepsy and identify factors that may contribute to these deaths and may also include sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). METHODS: We analyzed 5291 cases in which a postmortem imaging (PMI) study was performed using plane CT, because of an unexplained death. A rapid troponin T assay was performed using peripheral blood samples. Clinical information including the cause of death suspected by the attending physician, bo

Neurodivergence and Threat: A Case Study on the Risk of Violent Fixations in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Mass shootings have increasingly captured public attention in recent decades, prompting closer examination of the mental health of those responsible. This scrutiny often focuses on individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). While epidemiological evidence is mixed on whether these individuals are more likely to commit acts of violence than the general public, certain behavioral characteristics may make them more vulnerable to extremist ideations. This case study focuses on a 17-year-old male patient who initially presented with suicidal behavior, late
