Individuals with unilateral chronic ankle instability exhibit deficits in bilateral postural control, muscle strength and proprioception.

To investigate whether people with unilateral chronic ankle instability (CAI) have deficits in bilateral static and dynamic postural control, ankle muscle strength and ankle proprioception. A total of 31 participants with CAI and 31 non-CAI controls were recruited. Static postural control was assessed using root mean square (RMS) of the plantar centre of pressure (CoP) displacements during single-leg stance. Dynamic postural control was evaluated by measuring the time to stabilisation (TTS) following a single-leg drop onto a force plate. Ankle proprioception and muscle strength were measured u

Plantar pressure distribution has potential to be an adjunct to predict return to sport after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: An observational study.

INTRODUCTION: The human foot plays an important role in the biomechanical function of the lower limb. Plantar pressure distribution (PPD) can be a useful way to gauge functional knee stability. The objective of the study was to determine whether PPD can be used as an objective criterion for return to sports post anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR). METHODS: Over a period of 18 months, 54 symptomatic, MRI-confirmed, isolated ACL tear patients were enrolled in the study. Plantar pressure distribution was documented preoperatively and at 3, 4, 5, and 6 months postoperatively.

Physiological monitoring of movement and manoeuvrability during a military skiing exercise.

INTRODUCTION: Military forces receive training in various high-altitude warfare techniques to safeguard border regions and lives. Skiing is one of such practices where research evidences are limited. Therefore, a study was conducted to continuously monitor the physiological status of soldiers during military skiing practice to quantify the actual demands. METHODS: 11 Indian soldiers skied a distance of 8 km while carrying 18 kg of military equipment. Physiological status and heart rate variability (HRV) were continuously recorded throughout the exercise. The participants completed the event i

An Examination of Modifiable Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors and Fitness in Reserve Officers' Training Corps Cadets.

INTRODUCTION: The U.S. Army developed the Holistic Health and Fitness system and Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) to support the overall readiness of soldiers from a framework that assesses multiple domains of health. Although modifiable healthy lifestyle behaviors (MHLB)-diet, sleep, and physical activity (PA)-are presumed to influence ACFT performance, research on this relationship, particularly among Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) cadets, is limited. This study examines the relationship between MHLB and ACFT performance to understand their impact on fitness outcomes. MATERIALS AND

Novel Deep Learning Model to Estimate Knee Flexion and Adduction Moments With Wearable IMUs During Treadmill and Overground Walking.

A major issue after total knee replacement (TKR) surgery is asymmetric gait kinetics, which increases knee loads on the non-operated knee. This imbalance accelerates osteoarthritis (OA) progression, often leading to a second contralateral TKR. There is a clear need for an advanced wearable system with multiple sensors to accurately estimate gait kinetics in natural environments. This study aims to develop a machine learning framework that exclusively uses wearable inertial measurement units (IMUs) during overground and treadmill walking to estimate knee flexion moment (KFM) and knee adduction

Sitting-rising test scores predict natural and cardiovascular causes of deaths in middle-aged and older men and women.

AIMS: In a previous study, the ability to sit and rise from the floor was associated with all-cause mortality. Now, we aim to assess whether sitting-rising test (SRT) scores also predict premature natural and cardiovascular (CV) deaths. This is a prospective cohort design study. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 4282 adults aged 46-75 years (68% men) performed sitting and rising from the floor, which was scored from 0 to 5, with one point being subtracted from 5 for each support used (hand/knee) and 0.5 for an unsteadiness execution. The final SRT score was obtained by adding sitting and rising

Use of a wearable remote gait monitor BioIntelliSense Biobutton among residents in a nursing home: feasibility study.

Falls are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among older adults, yet objective gait data in nursing homes are rarely available to inform clinical decision-making. We conducted a 30-day observational feasibility study using a lightweight, torso-mounted wearable sensor to continuously measure gait in 16 nursing home residents. Linear mixed-effects models evaluated hourly and daily associations among step count, gait symmetry, foot strength, time, self-reported activity status (active vs inactive), and walking status (independent vs requiring assistance). Daily step counts declined driven

Acute Endurance Exercise Amends the Circulating MicroRNA Profile in Response to Exercise Dosage.

INTRODUCTION: Regular exercise, particularly continuous endurance activity, is known to help prevent and manage various chronic conditions. It remains unknown which cellular and molecular mechanisms underpin the adaptive response to exercise, despite new research suggesting that epigenetic mechanisms, particularly microRNAs (miRNAs), may play a role in the formation and regulation of exercise-related alterations. A "fitness score" was created by integrating the analysis of miRNAs as epigenetic biomarkers, genetic predispositions, and food and supplement consumption in order to gauge an individ

Fluid balance during hot-dry and warm-humid heat stress while adhering to occupational hydration recommendations.

PURPOSE: Current National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) hydration recommendations advise consuming approximately 237 mL of water every 15 to 20 min during work in the heat to limit body mass loss (BML) to <2%. However, whether fluid balance differs between hot-dry (HD) and warm-humid (WH) environments when workers adhere to these recommendations remains unclear. Therefore, this study evaluated fluid balance during simulated work in HD and WH conditions while following the prescribed hydration strategy. METHODS: Twenty healthy adults (10 females; 24 ± 5 y) completed 2 ra

Estimation of Cardiorespiratory Fitness in Military Applicants Using Seismocardiography.

INTRODUCTION: A run test is used in the assessment of physical fitness in military applicants. Seismocardiography is a fast, non-invasive method for estimation of cardiorespiratory fitness which could replace conventional run tests. We aimed to assess the association between distance covered at a 12-minute run test and estimated maximum oxygen uptake using seismocardiography. We hypothesized was that there was a significant correlation between the distance measured at a 12-minute run test and the estimated maximum oxygen uptake determined by seismocardiography. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We inclu
