Breaking tradition: should biostatistics doctoral qualifying exams evolve to better serve our students' ability to demonstrate readiness to conduct independent research?

Doctoral programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education often include qualifying exams as a central component of the curriculum. While these exams are designed to assess a student's knowledge and potential to conduct independent research as part of the culminating dissertation phase of their studies, they can also inadvertently perpetuate structural biases and barriers for underrepresented groups. Biostatistics programs have increasingly focused on efforts to address diversity. While some programs had long-standing initiatives, others began following the summer

Spaced repetition and other key factors influencing medical school entrance exam success: insights from a French survey.

BACKGROUND: First-year medical candidates encounter steep learning demands when transitioning from high school to university. Spaced repetition– a method of distributing review sessions over time– improves long-term memory retention. This study assessed its effectiveness alongside lifestyle and academic factors in students preparing for the medical school entrance examination. METHODS: In 2023, all 618 candidates at the University of Rouen were invited to complete a post-exam, self-administered questionnaire; 523 responded (84.6%). We collected data on revision methods (e.g., spaced repetition

Parental medical background and pre-admission preparedness in China's medical student selection.

INTRODUCTION: While children of medical professionals are globally overrepresented in medical schools, evidence from China remains limited. This study examines parental medical background prevalence among Chinese medical undergraduates, its association with admission outcomes, and disparities in pre-admission preparedness within China's meritocratic National College Entrance Examination (NCEE) system - a critical context given its role as the primary gateway to higher education. METHODS: Using data from the 2021 China Medical Student Survey (CMSS), a nationally representative sample of 19,299

Predicting Academic Difficulties and National Physical Therapy Examination Success in a Doctor of Physical Therapy Program: The Role of Admissions Variables and Course-Specific Performance.

INTRODUCTION: The rise in Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) programs has coincided with a decrease in applicants, creating challenges in maintaining admissions standards while ensuring student success. This study aimed to determine whether admissions variables predict academic difficulty and to assess their relationship with National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) outcomes. REVIEW OF LITERATURE: A literature review suggests that undergraduate grade point average (GPA), particularly prerequisite GPA, can predict DPT performance and NPTE success, although findings are inconsistent. This stu

Do cognitively based medical selection assessment scores predict doctors' clinical competency? A protocol for a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Internationally, medical schools increasingly use cognitively based selection assessments to select applicants. These tests evaluate cognitive performance and show some predictive validity for academic attainment during medical school, often incremental to that provided by secondary school grades. However, their use imposes burdens on applicants and institutions. They may also disadvantage certain under-represented groups. Therefore, to justify their adoption, these assessments should ideally predict doctors' future clinical competency, which can be evaluated by clinical outcomes

Predicting COMLEX-USA Level 2-CE using medical school performance and use for student advising.

CONTEXT: As Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination-USA (COMLEX-USA) Level 1 has changed to Pass/Fail scoring, residency programs that required minimum Level 1 scores for applicant consideration may choose to focus on COMLEX-USA Level 2-Cognitive Evaluation (Level 2-CE) target scores for applicant selection. Therefore, finding ways to predict passing and high Level 2-CE performance based on students' past performance and to guide their study accordingly is essential for helping students succeed in and beyond medical school. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this retrospective study i

Testing the Limits: Revisiting Standardized Testing in Pharmacy Education.

Standardized tests have long served as tools in higher education admissions to assess academic readiness and predict student success. The Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT), established in 1974, historically played a crucial role in evaluating prospective student pharmacists. Research consistently linked higher PCAT scores with stronger academic performance in pharmacy programs. However, criticisms of standardized testing, such as biases against underrepresented and low-income students, prompted a shift toward test-optional policies in many institutions. The COVID-19 pandemic, along with a

How professional and academic pre-qualifications relate to success in medical education: Results of a multicentre study in Germany.

OBJECTIVE: Every year, many applicants want to study medicine. Appropriate selection procedures are needed to identify suitable candidates for the demanding curriculum. Although research on medical school admissions has shown good predictive validity for cognitive selection methods (undergraduate GPA, aptitude tests), the literature on applicants with professional and/or academic experience prior to entering medical school remains slim. In our study, we therefore aimed to examine the association between academic success in medical school and having previously completed vocational training in t

What Predicts Graduate Public Health Student Success? Evidence for Admission Committees in a Post-Affirmative Action Landscape.

OBJECTIVE: A severe staff shortage and a dearth of professionals from underrepresented backgrounds in the public health workforce are contributing to poor health outcomes in the United States. Schools and programs can mitigate these problems by admitting more graduate public health students overall and from underrepresented backgrounds. We identified predictors of foundational graduate public health course grades and graduate grade point average (GPA), sharing evidence to remove application factors that are admission barriers and do not predict student outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a linear
