PURPOSE: Early identification of students at risk for poor United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE) Step 1 examination (Step 1) performance allows medical schools to provide targeted intervention for those students. Therefore, determination of metrics that identify struggling students is necessary for proper intervention. We hypothesize that; 1) student performance on pre-matriculation metrics will correlate with their Molecular and Cellular Foundations of Medicine (FDNS) course performance and 2) student performance in the FDNS course and on specific FDNS course objectives will co

IMPORTANCE: There has been disappointing progress in enrollment of medical students from racial and ethnic groups underrepresented in medicine, including American Indian or Alaska Native, Black, and Hispanic students. Barriers that may influence students interested in medicine are understudied.
OBJECTIVE: To examine racial and ethnic differences in barriers faced by students taking the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study used survey data (surveys administered between January 1, 2015, to December 31, 2018) from MCAT examinees li

The aging population, burnout, and earlier retirement of physicians along with the static number of training positions are likely to worsen the current physician shortage. There is an urgent need to transform the process for selecting medical students. In this Invited Commentary, the authors suggest that to build the physician workforce that the United States needs for the future, academic medicine should focus on building capacity in 3 overarching areas. First, medical schools need to develop a more diverse pool of capable applicants that better matches the demographic characteristics of heal

While the innovativeness of the flipped classroom (FC) approach promotes active participation and higher-order thinking among students, there are concerns about its effectiveness in terms of knowledge retention. Currently, there are no studies involving medical school biochemistry that evaluate this aspect of effectiveness. Thus, we conducted a historical control study that analyzed observational data from two freshman batches of the Doctor of Medicine program in our institution. Class 2021 (n = 250) served as the traditional lecture (TL) group while Class 2022 (n = 264) served as the FC group

BACKGROUND: The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is designed to inform members of the admissions committee about applicants' academic readiness for medical school. Although previous work has shown that MCAT scores have some predictive validity evidence for a variety of medical student outcomes, there is also a concern that the MCAT is overly emphasized by admissions committees, which may, for example, affect matriculant diversity. The purpose of this study was to understand whether deemphasizing the MCAT by blinding committee members to applicants' specific scores has resulted in matricul

PROBLEM: Lack of diversity in the physician workforce has well-documented negative impacts on health outcomes. Evidence supports the use of pathway or pipeline programs to recruit underrepresented in medicine students. However, data on how a pathway program should deliver instruction are lacking. This report describes a multiyear project to build such a system with the goal of increasing diversity within medical school cohorts and ultimately the physician workforce.
APPROACH: In the 2015-2016 academic year, the Ponce Health Sciences University started a 3-phase project to create a data-driven

PURPOSE: A regional quota program (RQP) was introduced in Japan to ameliorate the urban-rural imbalance of physicians. Despite concerns about the low learning abilities of RQP graduates, the relationship between the RQP and practical clinical competency after initiating clinical residency has not been evaluated.
METHODS: We conducted a nationwide cross-sectional study to assess the association between the RQP and practical clinical competency based on General Medicine In-Training Examination (GM-ITE) scores. We compared the overall and category GM-ITE results between RQP graduates and other r

Purpose: To investigate the effects of gender discrimination in Japan's medical school admission process and to assess whether the situation has improved since the disclosure of such discrimination in 2018. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using secondary data from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology. The proportions of male and female applicants vis-à-vis all successful candidates admitted from 2016 to 2021 were analyzed; four medical schools were found to be systematically guilty of discriminatory admission practices. BACKGROUND: Reduced mobility is a central feature of COPD. Assessment of mobility outcomes that can be measured digitally (digital mobility outcomes (DMOs)) in daily life such as gait speed and steps per day is increasingly possible using devices such as pedometers and accelerometers, but the predictive value of these measures remains unclear in relation to key outcomes such as hospital admission and survival.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review, nested within a larger scoping review by the MOBILISE-D consortium, addressing DMOs in a range of chronic conditions. Qualitative and quantita

INTRODUCTION: First-time pass rates of the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) have declined 7% from 2019 to 2022 with more than a third of schools experiencing a decline of ≥10%.
COMMENTARY: The cause of the decline is likely multifactorial and extends beyond the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Changes to the NAPLEX blueprint in 2021, curricular revisions in response to the implementation of Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education Standards 2016, and changes to prerequisite course requirements in response to declining enrollment must also be evaluated as potential

BACKGROUND: Students are selected for admission to the Northern Ontario School of Medicine University (NOSM U) MD degree program using criteria aiming to maximize access of persons thought most likely to practice in the region, including use of a geographic context score (GCS) which ranks those with lived experience in northern Ontario and/or rurality most highly. This study investigates the effect of this admissions process upon medical school academic performance.
METHODS: We used a retrospective cohort design combined with multiple linear regression analysis to investigate the relationship

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability among young children and adolescents and the effects can be lifelong and wide-reaching. Although there have been numerous studies to evaluate the impact of childhood head injury on educational outcomes, few large-scale studies have been conducted, and previous research has been limited by issues of attrition, methodological inconsistencies, and selection bias. We aim to compare the educational and employment outcomes of Scottish schoolchildren previously hospitalised for TBI with their peers.
