OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the extent to which elderly people with cognitive impairment are able to answer questions about their quality of life.Design and setting308 elderly residents were interviewed within 2 weeks of admission to one of 30 residential or nursing homes in north-west England.
MEASURES: The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Lancashire Quality of Life Profile (Residential) (LQOLP(R)), the Crichton Royal Behaviour Rating Scale (CRBRS) and the HONOS-65+.

BACKGROUND: Little information is available on the costs of residential care for people with mental health problems, and there are very few research data on how or why the costs of provision vary.
METHOD: As part of a broader study based on data collected from across the residential care sectors in eight districts and using multiple regression analysis, research has examined whether and which resident characteristics are associated with higher or lower costs.

The school-home for "psychopathic" children, Mellansjö, was founded in 1928. The initiator was Alice Hellström, a teacher and physician. She was a child psychiatric pioneer in Sweden. Medical screening of applicants to residential homes for older people has been shown to redirect inappropriate applications, although other outcomes have not been reported. This study assessed 117 applicants, of whom 63% were medically examined and offered medically directed interventions if indicated. All applicants were then reassessed at 6 and 12 weeks. A retrospective chart review was undertaken to collect and report data on the prevalence and characteristics of pain in persons with terminal-stage AIDS. A convenience sample consisting of 50 patient charts at a residential AIDS hospice was utilized. Data were collected from the McCaffery Initial Pain Assessment Tool (IPAT) (1983) which was completed at the time of each hospice admission. We examined changes over 28 days in mood states, craving for cocaine, and sleep during short-term abstinence reported by 12 male, predominantly intravenous-using, cocaine-addicted subjects residing in a research facility. Medical screening of 100 old people at the time of their acceptance for admission to residential (part 3) care revealed a great deal of previously unreported yet treatable illness. As a result of screening, alternative care was thought more appropriate in 32 cases--hospital admission in 16, sheltered housing in 4, and remaining at home in 12. It is therefore suggested that the time of translocation of an old person from independent to institutional living is a time when medical screening is particularly appropriate.

The health problems of 160 adolescents in four residential facilities of the Quebec social welfare court were studied. At the time of admission 44% had at least one problem requiring consultation with a specialist and 80% had an average of two problems requiring primary care.
