Undiagnosed Undescended Testis in Young Adults in Saudi Arabia: Examination-Based Prevalence, Sociocultural Barriers to Early Care and Public Health Implications.

BACKGROUND: Undescended testis (UDT) persisting into adulthood increases risks of infertility and testicular cancer. In Saudi Arabia, delayed diagnosis is common and population prevalence of undiagnosed adult UDT is unknown. This study estimated point prevalence of previously unrecognized UDT among healthy young adult males in Riyadh and explored sociocultural barriers to early care. METHODS: A cross-sectional, examination-based screening was conducted January - August 2025 at Al Kharj Armed Forces Hospital. Simple random sampling recruited 1349 Saudi males aged 18-28 from university, militar

Prevalence and predictors of percent body fat-defined obesity among federal contingency force commandos in India: implications for military obesity standards.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is increasingly affecting military personnel, yet its accurate assessment remains challenging because body mass index (BMI) does not distinguish between fat and lean mass; percent body fat (PBF) offers a more physiologically meaningful alternative. However, data on PBF-defined obesity prevalence and its predictors among elite Indian military personnel, such as Indian federal contingency force (IFCF) commandos, remain scarce. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study among 116 IFCF personnel stationed in Gujarat, western India. PBF was measured using direct segmental mu

Quantifying the thermal demands of the British Military Annual Fitness Test: an observational study and randomised control trial.

INTRODUCTION: Thermal modelling of the British Army's annual physical employment test-Role Fitness Test (Soldier) (RFT(S))-indicated that the two-stage load carriage section may present a thermal risk to personnel (body core temperature >39.5°C). In response, the Army modified the RFT(S) by extending the transition time between load carriage sections from 5 to 15 min. This paper presents body core temperature (gastrointestinal temperature; TGI) data collected from a field-observational study of the modified RFT(S), and during a controlled laboratory load carriage study implementing the origina

Autonomic Nervous System Responses to Aviation Live-Fire Combat Training: An Effective Tool for Operator State Monitoring of United States Warfighter Aircrew.

BACKGROUND: Warfighters perform highly complex and dangerous combat missions are both physically and cognitively challenging. Meeting these physiological demands are regulated by the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Thus, continuously monitoring ANS activity during combat and training may critically inform military leadership of the current physiological state and ability of their warfighters to effectively execute mission tasks. The purpose of this study was to quantify ANS response throughout 540 minutes (9 hours) of aviation-related combat training drills performed in the UH-60 helicopter.

Implications of obesity in the US military: unfit to serve?

Obesity remains a significant public health concern with substantial implications for military readiness. Rising rates of overweight and obesity among service members challenge recruitment, retention and deployability. Although the military continues to screen and manage obesity, current body composition tools and policies often fail to capture true health risk or operational capability. This narrative review evaluates the prevalence and impact of obesity in the US military, critiques existing assessment methods and discusses recent policy updates across service branches. Particular attention

Trends in the prevalence of obesity among U.S. active component service members and civilians, 2013-2023.

Trends in obesity among U.S. active component service members (ACSMs) and civilians are relevant to military recruitment and retention, as excess body weight is a common disqualification for military service. This study utilized measured height and weight data from the Military Health System Data Repository for ACSMs (cumulative n=12,262,745) and the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for civilians ages 17-62 years (cumulative n=19,334). Accounting for the design of each data source, the prevalence of obesity (body mass index≥30 kg/m2) and body mass index (BMI) distributions were

Crafting veteran to baccalaureate nursing programs.

Upon leaving the military, veteran health care personnel have difficulty finding commensurate civilian employment, yet their military transcripts document a strong record of health care education and experience. Vigorous Veterans' Bachelor of Science in Nursing (VBSN) programs can provide military personnel with opportunities to become registered nurses. This article describes the incremental planning, curriculum design, prior-learning evaluation option implementation, and student veteran results from one VBSN program with a ten-year history of successful, sustainable delivery. What Are the Acute and Chronic Effects of Initial Military Training on Physiological and Neuromuscular Performance in Military Populations? A Narrative Review.

Initial military training (IMT) is designed to physically and mentally transition recruits from civilian to military personnel, typically lasting 6-14 weeks. Accordingly, the content and focus of IMT appear variable, and it is important to understand what effects this training has on recruits. This study reviewed existing literature regarding the acute and chronic effects of IMT on physiological and neuromuscular performance. Using a systematic style search strategy (Google Scholar, EBSCO, PubMed, Medline), 28 relevant studies were identified, focusing on longitudinal (n = 26) and acute (n = 6

Capability of Virtual Reality for Military Stress Inoculation Training: Stress induction using heart rate considering the influence of cybersickness, interest in technology, technology anxiety and movement.

Virtual reality (VR) offers new possibilities for training of military personnel; complex scenarios can be simulated where conventional training methods reach their limits. Besides that, its use in psychological skills training, such as stress control techniques as part of stress inoculation training (SIT), is conceivable. SIT requires a level of stress that renders the use of stress control techniques necessary. In this study, we examined how much stress can be induced using VR, and what impact cyber sickness, interest in technology, technology anxiety and movement influences have on stress i
