Propacetamol in combination with intravenous patient-controlled analgesia for post cesarean section uterine contraction pain: A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Propacetamol, an intravenous prodrug of paracetamol, can be employed alongside intravenous patient-controlled analgesia (IVPCA) to decrease opioid consumption and associated side effects. While prior studies focused on propacetamol's efficacy in incisional wound pain, its effectiveness for uterine contraction pain remains underexplored. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective randomized controlled trial recruit parturients with ASA physical status class II, undergoing scheduled cesarean delivery at gestational age 36 weeks or greater. All parturients received spinal anesthesia and

Neuromuscular Performance Changes in Response to the Australian Special Forces Selection Course.

INTRODUCTION: Strenuous military activities, such as Special Forces (SF) selection courses, are known to involve high physical loads in the presence of food and sleep deprivation, which can have detrimental impacts on physical performance. Understanding the magnitude of performance deficit and the time required for recovery associated with these events, is important for injury prevention and maintaining operational readiness. The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in physical performance in response to the Australian SF Selection Course (SF-SC) and to monitor recovery through

Combining Noninvasive Brain Stimulation and Physiotherapy to Improve the Management of Chronic Low Back Pain in Veterans: Protocol for a Multi-Arm Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is the most common chronic pain condition in veterans, but the effectiveness of standard management approaches is modest. Addressing the psychological risk factors of chronic pain that are often observed in this population (eg, anxiety, depression, stress and mood disorders) may be important to enhance outcomes. Psychologically informed physiotherapy (PiP) identifies and mitigates the negative impacts of emotional and cognitive factors alongside the biomedical aspects of chronic LBP to improve physical functioning and has shown promising results in this populati

Effects of dynamic taping and moderate-intensity TheraBand training versus usual care on pain, disability, and well-being in adult National Cadet Corps with chronic heel pain: a pilot and feasibility trial.

INTRODUCTION: Identifying appropriate pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) candidates is a challenge in planning for the safe and effective roll-out of this strategy. We explored the use of a validated HIV risk screening tool, HIV Incidence Risk Index for Men who have Sex with Men (HIRI-MSM), to identify "optimal" candidates among MSM testing at a busy sexual health clinic's community testing sites in Toronto, Canada. METHODS: Between November 2014 and April 2015, we surveyed MSM undergoing anonymous HIV testing at community testing sites in Toronto, Canada, to quantify "optimal" candidates for sc

Autonomic Nervous System Responses to Rest and Exertion Following Concussion (the Measuring ANSWERS Study): Protocol for a 2-Aim Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysregulation is increasingly linked to concussion. However, studies examining the relationship between concussion and ANS measures, such as heart rate (HR), HR variability (HRV), and pupillary light reflex (PLR), are limited by small sample sizes, inconsistent control of confounders, and methodological heterogeneity, thereby limiting clinical translation. OBJECTIVE: The Measuring Autonomic Nervous System in Warfighters Following Exertion and Resting Stressors (ANSWERS) study aims to address these limitations by incorporating adequate sample sizes, u

Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Restore Standards in Medical and Dental Education in Pakistan.

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

US Army Accession and Retention Standards: Impact on Obesity and Medical Readiness.

INTRODUCTION: Military body fat standards were implemented in the 1980s to prevent obesity and associated poor military readiness. In the past 2 decades, enforcement of existing Army body composition standards has been eroded by the steady increase in national obesity rates, the demand for new recruits especially during the 2007 surge in Iraq, and the COVID epidemic in 2020. The diminishing qualified recruit pool puts a new focus on accession standards. The purpose of accession standards is to ensure that recruits will meet soldier standards, but accession standards have been relaxed to improv

Dual intra-articular injections of corticosteroid and hyaluronic acid versus single corticosteroid injection for ankle osteoarthritis: a randomized comparative trial.

BACKGROUND: Intra-articular corticosteroid injection is commonly used for pain relief in ankle osteoarthritis (OA). The effects of corticosteroids (CS) are short-lived, whereas hyaluronic acid (HA) have longer-lasting effects. The objective was to compare the efficacy of dual injections of CS and HA to CS alone. We hypothesized that intra-articular injections of dual agents would be more effective than CS alone. METHODS: A single-blind, randomized, controlled trial was designed to investigate this hypothesis. 135 patients with ankle OA were enrolled into an intra-articular CS injection group

Predicting Maximal Military Occupational Task Performance from Physical Fitness Tests Using Machine Learning.

PURPOSE: Optimal performance in military tasks is crucial for operational success. These tasks are often simulated in training, assessing personnel performance within a military environment. However, these assessments are time-consuming and a potential injury risk. Physical characteristics such as muscular strength, power, aerobic endurance, and circumferences can be used to predict these dynamic and demanding tasks. Utilizing machine learning models to predict assessment outcomes may lead to optimized management of personnel, time, and interventions in the military. METHODS: This study recru

This study aimed to investigate the effect of heel height on patellofemoral joint stress (PFJS) in young women during stair descent. A total of 25 healthy females were recruited. They were instructed to descend a six-step staircase while wearing heeled shoes of different heel heights: flat heel (1 cm), low heel (3 cm), medium heel (5 cm), and high heel (7 cm). Then, PFJS was calculated using kinematic and kinetic data obtained from a biomechanical model of the patellofemoral joint. Compared with the flat heel condition, the high, medium, and low heel conditions resulted in significant increase

Avoiding "Too Tall" and "Too Short": The Effect of the Community on the Regulation of Body Height.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence emphasizes the role of social signaling in the regulation of human growth. AIM: To disentangle the influence of physical living conditions such as wealth, health, nutrition, and education from influences that are transmitted among members of the social group. We consider the spectrum of all historically possible heights ("transgenerational growth potential") and disentangle the influence of the physical living conditions from influences that are transmitted among members of the same social group. We ask (1) what is the magnitude of the "transgenerational growth pot
