The Genomic landscape of short tandem repeats across multiple ancestries.

Short Tandem Repeats (STRs) have been found to play a role in a myriad of complex traits and genetic diseases. We examined the variability in the lengths of over 850,000 STR loci in 996 children with suspected genetic disorders and 1,178 parents across six separate ancestral groups: Africans, Europeans, East Asians, Admixed Americans, Non-admixed Americans, and Pacific Islanders. For each STR locus we compared allele length between and within each ancestry group. In relation to Europeans, admixed Americans had the most similar STR lengths with only 623 positions either significantly expanded o

[Association between oral health and cognitive decline in older Chileans].

OBJECTIVE: To identify the association between oral health and suspected cognitive impairment in older adults in Chile. METHOD: Cross-sectional study including 1826 people ≥60 years who participated in the National Health Survey of Chile, 2016-2017. Oral health was evaluated by the number of teeth, presence of caries, use of dental prostheses, self-reported oral health, and pain and/or discomfort in the oral cavity. Cognitive impairment was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). The association was evaluated by logistic and linear regression, adjusted for sociodemographic an

Examining Increasing Racial Inequities in Opioid Overdose Deaths: a Spatiotemporal Analysis of Black and White Decedents in St. Louis, Missouri, 2011-2021.

The third wave of the opioid overdose crisis-defined by the proliferation of illicit fentanyl and its analogs-has not only led to record numbers of overdose deaths but also to unprecedented racial inequities in overdose deaths impacting Black Americans. Despite this racialized shift in opioid availability, little research has examined how the spatial epidemiology of opioid overdose death has also shifted. The current study examines the differential geography of OOD by race and time (i.e., pre-fentanyl versus fentanyl era) in St. Louis, Missouri. Data included decedent records from the local me

Association of age-related eye diseases with cognitive frailty in older adults: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Age-related eye diseases and cognitive frailty (CF) are both important predictors of adverse health outcomes in older adults, however, little is known about their association. AIMS: To demonstrate the association between age-related eye diseases and cognitive frailty in a population of Iranian older adults. METHODS: In this cross-sectional, population-based study, we included 1136 individuals (female n = 514) aged 60 years and older (mean 68.8 ± 6.7 years) who participated in the second cycle of the Amirkola Health and Aging Project (AHAP) between 2016 and 2017. Gut Microbiome Composition and Its Association with Sleep in Major Psychiatric Disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep disturbances are highly prevalent across most major psychiatric disorders. Alterations in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, neuroimmune mechanisms, and circadian rhythm disturbances partially explain this connection. The gut microbiome is also suspected to play a role in sleep regulation, and recent studies suggest that certain probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, and fecal microbiome transplantation can improve sleep quality. METHODS: We aimed to assess the relationship between gut-microbiota composition, psychiatric disorders, and sleep quality in this cross-sectio

ARMC5-negative primary bilateral macronodular adrenal hyperplasia.

A woman in her 60s with chronic fatigue, depressed mood and proximal muscle weakness was referred to our endocrinology department. Physical examination revealed facial plethora, atrophic skin and ankle oedema. Adjuvant blood and urine analyses indicated endogenous ACTH-independent Cushing syndrome. Abdominal imaging showed bilateral macronodular adrenals, measuring 58.9 × 29.7 mm on the right and 55.6 × 42.6 mm on the left. Primary bilateral macronodular adrenal hyperplasia was confirmed by pathology after bilateral adrenalectomy. Gradual mental and physical recovery was observed in the months

Neural variability in three major psychiatric disorders.

Across the major psychiatric disorders (MPDs), a shared disruption in brain physiology is suspected. Here we investigate the neural variability at rest, a well-established behavior-relevant marker of brain function, and probe its basis in gene expression and neurotransmitter receptor profiles across the MPDs. We recruited 219 healthy controls and 279 patients with schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, or bipolar disorders (manic or depressive state). The standard deviation of blood oxygenation level-dependent signal (SDBOLD) obtained from resting-state fMRI was used to characterize neural

Repetitive Negative Thinking As a Transdiagnostic Prospective Predictor of Depression and Anxiety Symptoms in Neurodiverse First-Semester College Students.

BACKGROUND: Improving the understanding and treatment of mental health concerns, including depression and anxiety, are significant priorities for autistic adults. While several theories have been proposed to explain the high prevalence of internalizing symptoms in autistic populations, little longitudinal research has been done to investigate potential causal mechanisms. Additional research is needed to explore how proposed contributors to depression from general population research predict and/or moderate the development of internalizing symptoms in autistic individuals. In this study, we inv

A double-blind, sham-controlled, trial of home-administered rhythmic 10-Hz median nerve stimulation for the reduction of tics, and suppression of the urge-to-tic, in individuals with Tourette syndrome and chronic tic disorder.

Tourette syndrome (TS) and chronic tic disorder (CTD) are neurological disorders of childhood onset characterized by the occurrence of tics; repetitive, purposeless, movements or vocalizations of short duration which can occur many times throughout a day. Currently, effective treatment for tic disorders is an area of considerable unmet clinical need. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a home-administered neuromodulation treatment for tics involving the delivery of rhythmic pulse trains of median nerve stimulation (MNS) delivered via a wearable 'watch-like' device worn at the wrist. The case of an abused child exposed to the direct danger of serious damage to health in the form of a permanent mental illness.

Prolonged exposure to violence in any form takes a toll on children's health. It may increase the risk of multiple mental disorders appearing in adult life. Such disorders may be of severe intensity, and in extreme cases, they can even disable normal functioning both individually and socially. The present case concerns an eight-year-old girl subjected to all forms of abuse (sexual, physical, psychological and negligence) in her biological family. The foster parents made a notification of a suspected criminal offence based on their multiple observations of behavioral disorders of the child. Aft
