[Alcohol and balance disorders (author's transl)].

The optokinetic, horizontal, per- and postrotatoric nystagmus was recorded before the consumption of alcoholic beverages by 20 young test persons as well as 2, 4, and 6 h later. The results showed that the most evident alterations cannot be recorded during the highest blood alcohol concentration but only 6 h after the consumption of alcohol. It was evaluated that the decomposition products of alcohol provoked the vestibular disorders.

Compulsory blood alcohol testing of road crash casualties in Victoria: the first three years.

The history, rationale and implementation of legislation for compulsory blood alcohol tests on adult road crash casualties presenting at Victorian hospitals are reviewed. Drinking drivers admitted to casualty departments can now be identified and prosecuted; doctors can obtain blood alcohol test results on road crash casualties without threat of litigation; drinking drivers with alcohol problems may be directed to appropriate re-education or rehabilitation programmes; the opportunity also exists for treatment of non-driver casualties with alcohol problems. In the first three years of testing,

The dipsogenic effect of alcohol and the loss of control phenomenon.

A counterbalanced within-subjects design was employed to assess the acute effects of alcohol ingestion on thirst and fluid intake and to relate these effects to the dehydration known to result from acute ingestion of alcohol. Fourteen male nonalcoholic social drinkers between the ages of 18 and 30 consumed 0.8 gm of alcohol/kg body weight during one experimental session and a placebo (0.05 gm/kg) of equal volume during the other. During the 90-minute drinking period and for one hour both before and afterward, urine specimens were collected. After the drinking period, blood alcohol levels and u

[Genetic control of the ethanol effect on the human EEG].

26 identical and 26 fraternal twin pairs were subjected to 1,2 ml/kg alcohol loading under standardized conditions; furthermore, 13 non-twin persons were repeatedly subjected to the same procedure in order to test the intraindividual variability. The alcohol effect was pursued by repeated EEG recordings. The EEGs of identical twins proved to react identically to alcohol loading, whereas the EEGs of fraternal twins became more dissimilar during the course of the experiment. The identical reaction of the brain wave pattern in monozygotic twins cannot be attributed to more similar blood alcohol c

Genetic control of ethanol action on the central nervous system. An EEG study in twins.

The purpose of the investigation is to claify the genetic contribution to the interindividual variability of ethanol action on the central nervous system. The 52 adult male healthy twin pairs (26 MZ, 26 DZ) got 1.2 ml/kg ethanol p.o. under standardized conditions; furthermore, 13 non-twin subjects were repeatedly subjected to the same procedure in order to test the intraindividual variability. The EEG was recorded before and 60, 120, 180, and 240 min after alcohol intake. The EEGs were off-line analyzed by means of a computer program for time domain analysis. As was already known, on the avera

Alcohol, road crash casualties, and countermeasures.

Alcohol is a major contributing factor in over one-third of all road fatalities in this community. Almost half the fatalities occur in people aged less than 25 years of age. Results of recent compulsory blood test legislation in Australia and New Zealand are presented and provide incontrovertible evidence of the vast extent of the problem of alcohol on the road. The social and drinking profiles of road crash casualties with blood alcohol concentrations greater than .05 g/100 ml differ from those of other casualties. Countermeasures used in the control of this epidemic include legislation, impr

The effects of fructose and other substances on acetaldehyde and ethanol metabolism in the rat.

The purpose of this study was to test the comparative effectiveness of fructose, glucose, sucrose and alanine in increasing the rates of ethanol and acetaldehyde clearance. Intravenously administered fructose was found to be most effective, followed by alanine in increasing the rate of blood alcohol clearance. Administration of any one of the test substances during ethanol metabolism did not result in a significant change in the levels of blood acetaldehyde. Fructose partially prevented the ethanol-mediated changes in the concentration ratios of lactate/pyruvate and beta-hydroxybutyrate/acetoa

Reversal of ethanol intoxications in humans: an assessment of the efficacy of propranolol.

The effect of post-ethanol ingestion of a single dose of propranolol on acute intoxication was studied in 13 healthy male volunteers. A within subjects, double-blind, crossover design was employed. Each subject participated in two experimental sessions. In each session, subjects took a battery of tests under three conditions: Sober, Alcohol (0.8 g/kg) and Alcohol (1.1 g/kg) + Pill, in that order. The pill contained propranolol (40 mg) in one session and placebo in the other. Ethanol significantly reduced motor coordination, memory and divided attention performance and altered mood scores. Acute tolerance to ethanol in the rat.

Male Wistar rats were examined on the moving belt test at approximately 10, 30 and 60 min after administration of ethanol in doses ranging from 1.0-2.8 g/kg. Immediately after the test, each animal was sacrificed and ethanol concentrations were measured. The regression line of impairment as a function of brain alcohol concentration showed a progressive shift toward higher brain levels with increasing time after alcohol administration. The results confirm the existence of acute tolerance to ethanol, as defined by reduced impairment of function for a given blood level on the falling versus the r

The effect of gravity of positional alcohol nystagmus phase II in man.

On request from the Swedish state authorities for health and civil air transport (Socialstyrelsen and Luftfartsstyrelsen) experiments were performed in order to establish the duration of the vestibular disturbances after alcohol intake related to rules for aviation safety. It is known that the threshold for provocation of positional alcohol nystagmus (PAN) is lowered under the influence of gavity forces above normal. It has been suggested that PAN II could be provoked by g-loads as late as 48 hours after a small alcohol intake. Our experiments were performed in a human centrifuge with g-values

Drug interactions: the effect of alcohol and meprobamate applied singly and jointly in human subjects. V. Summary and conclusions.

The design, analysis and conclusions of the series of experiments by Carpenter et al., Ashford and Cobby, and Cobby and Ashford [J. Stud. Alc., Suppl. No. 7, pp. 54-176, 1975] are reviewed. Mathematical models of the joint action of drugs were developed and data obtained to test the models by studying the action of alcohol and meprobamate singly and in combination in human subjects. The data proved to be too limited in the range of drug concentrations in the blood necessary to identify the single most appropriate model. Carpenter et al. analyzed the data by analysis of variance, which involves

[Pharmacokinetic studies on absorption and excretion of oxazepam in Combination with alcohol (author's transl)].

The influence of 7-chloro-1,3-dihydro-3-hydroxy-5-phenyl 2H-1,4-benzodiazepin-2-one (oxazepam, Adumbran) (30 mg) on the effects produced by alcohol (0.75 g/kg) and vice versa was studied in 14 male test subjects using the following scheme: (A) alcohol; (B) placebo; (C) oxazepam; (D) oxazepam and alcohol combined; (E) alcohol given 30 min prior to oxazepam. Blood and serum levels were determined and excretion in the urine was tested during the 7-h duration of the experiment. The blood alcohol curves show a similar course, leading to the conclusion that oxazepam has no influence on the eliminati

Ventricular function in noncardiacs with alcoholic fatty liver: role of ethanol in the production of cardiomyopathy.

Since many patients with cardiomyopathy have a history of chronic ethanolism often associated with malnutrition, we have evaluated left ventricular (LV) function in alcoholics with fatty liver, who had no clinical evidence of cardiac or nutritional disease. During an afterload test of LV function the pressor response to angiotensin evoked a threefold rise of enddiastolic pressure in the alcoholic group which was substantially greater than the 4 mm Hg rise in control subjects. The stroke volume and stroke work response in the noncardiac alcoholic was significantly less than in controls. Diminis
