Not a firearm: A case report of a fatal penetrating pseudo-ballistic neck injury from defective airbag deployment.

Fatal injuries caused by defective airbag inflators are increasingly recognized as a distinct forensic and medicolegal issue. We describe the case of a 51-year-old male driver who was transported by emergency medical services following a low-speed frontal collision with a palm tree and was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. Review of surveillance footage showed that the driver abruptly swerved in an attempt to avoid a motorcyclist immediately before impact. Emergency services were alerted by witnesses, and police investigation documented limited frontal damage localized to the front bum

A geospatial analysis of subway-related fatalities in New York City (2008-2021).

The New York City (NYC) subway system is one of the largest rapid transit systems in the world. With an annual ridership of 1 billion people, subway-related fatalities present a significant public health concern. Properly contextualizing such fatality data is imperative to understanding relevant risk factors. This paper reviews all subway-related fatalities in NYC occurring between 2008 and 2021 (n = 838). Descriptive statistics for fatalities considered manner of death, decedent demographics, season of death, and day of the week when the death occurred. In addition, a geospatial approach was

Analysis of walking speeds and success rates on mid-block crossings using virtual reality simulation.

A focus is set worldwide to study pedestrian behavior in road situations associated with a high frequency of crashes. This paper presents the results from a virtual reality simulation study that recorded pedestrians performing mid-block crossings on a straight segment of an urban street. The experiment was designed with eight scenarios with combinations of one or two lanes, two vehicle speeds, and constant or variable gaps between vehicles. The experiment was conducted with 48 subjects producing 538 crossing observations. The results show that subjects, on average, watched about 5 vehicle gaps

Partial isolated tear of the popliteus tendon following an in-car traffic accident: A rare cause of knee pain: A CARE-compliant case report.

RATIONALE: Lesions caused by traffic accidents are often microscopic and minimal; therefore, their diagnosis can be easily overlooked. Moreover, when it is a rarely reported type of lesion, it can be even more easily undiagnosed. Isolated popliteal injuries are uncommon and have rarely been reported. PATIENT CONCERNS: In this case study, we describe a right partially isolated popliteus tendon rupture that was undiagnosed for 2 years in a patient with posterior knee pain after an in-car traffic accident. A 49-year-old female patient presented with right knee pain that had persisted for 2 years

Stabbed by motorcycle? Reconstruction of an unusual traffic accident.

The reconstruction of traffic accidents involving powered two-wheelers (PTWs) frequently proves to be a challenging task. A case in which a fatal head-on crash of a PTW with a small truck where only minor vehicles damage was observed but resulted in isolated fatal chest trauma is discussed here. External examination of the corpse revealed two lacerations on the back, at the first glance implying sharp trauma. Based on the accident traces, the technical expert assumed an emergency break of the PTW rider resulting in a rotation of the PTW in terms of a wheelie on the front wheel. The first conta

Effects of an integrated collision warning system on risk compensation behavior: An examination under naturalistic driving conditions.

Collision warning systems can improve traffic safety, while their safety benefit may be lessened due to improper risk compensation or system misuse. There are limited studies of advanced safety systems increasing unexpected risky driving behavior, especially with adolescent drivers. This study is designed to address this research gap in two main areas: 1) it seeks to examine whether and how the introduction of advanced driver-assistance systems influences drivers' risk compensation behavior (e.g., increase of hard braking frequency), and 2) it investigates key factors (e.g., distraction) that

An examination of teen drivers' car-following behavior under naturalistic driving conditions: With and without an advanced driving assistance system.

Teen drivers are overrepresented in motor vehicle crashes, and most studies concluded it was mainly due to their lack of experiences and tendencies of risk-taking. The design of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) aims to provide assistance in multiple stages in human information processing during driving, including environmental sensing, information processing, decision making, and vehicle controlling, in order to improve driving safety. It is expected that novice drivers may benefit more from using ADAS than adult drivers as such technologies can compensate for their frequent errors.

Bilothorax Associated with Bile Peritonitis in a Dog with No Diaphragmatic Disruption: A Case Report.

A 4-year-old intact male mixed-breed dog was presented with vomiting and severe depression of 6-day duration after being struck by a car 2 weeks before presentation. Clinical examination revealed hypothermia, respiratory difficulty, jaundice, and a bicavitary (pleural and peritoneal) effusion. Hematological and biochemical abnormalities included neutrophilic leukocytosis, increased total bilirubin concentration, and increased serum lipase activity. Biochemical and cytological evaluation of both abdominal and thoracic fluids were suggestive of bilious effusions. During celiotomy, a rupture of t

A single session of trip-specific training modifies trunk control following treadmill induced balance perturbations in stroke survivors.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with stroke are at significant risk of falling. Trip-specific training is a targeted training approach that has been shown to reduce falls in older adults and amputees by enhancing the compensatory stepping response required to prevent a fall. Still, individuals with stroke have unique deficits (e.g. spasticity) which draws into question if this type of training will be effective for this population. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate if a single session of trip-specific training can modify the compensatory stepping response (trunk movement, step length/duration, reaction time) of in

Rapid wound healing in a reef manta ray masks the extent of vessel strike.

Increasing vessel traffic in the marine environment due to commercial and recreational activities has amplified the number of conflicts with marine animals. However, there are limited multi-year observations of the healing rate of marine animals following vessel strike. Here we document the healing rate of a reef manta ray Mobula alfredi, following lacerations caused by a propeller along the pectoral fin. We demonstrate a high healing capacity, with wound length following a negative exponential curve over time. Lacerations healed to 5% of the initial wound length (i.e. 95% closure) within 295

Cranial and spinal injuries in motorcycle accidents: A hospital-based study.

BACKGROUND: Injuries caused by motorcycle accidents have been reported in several studies with an examination from a general trauma point of view. However, to our knowledge, there is no detailed study specific to central nervous system injuries. This research was focused on central nervous system injuries associated with motorcycle accidents. METHODS: The medical records of 540 patients who were admitted to the emergency department between 2008 and 2016 as the result of a motorcycle accident were retrospectively evaluated. Data were collected from electronic medical records, follow-up forms,

Association of BMI with overall and cause-specific mortality: a population-based cohort study of 3·6 million adults in the UK.

BACKGROUND: BMI is known to be strongly associated with all-cause mortality, but few studies have been large enough to reliably examine associations between BMI and a comprehensive range of cause-specific mortality outcomes. METHODS: In this population-based cohort study, we used UK primary care data from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) linked to national mortality registration data and fitted adjusted Cox regression models to examine associations between BMI and all-cause mortality, and between BMI and a comprehensive range of cause-specific mortality outcomes (recorded by Int

Observing the observation of (vulnerable) road user behaviour and traffic safety: A scoping review.

Behavioural observation studies in road safety research collect naturalistic data of road users that are not informed (beforehand) of their participation in a research project. It enables the observation of behavioural and situational processes that contribute to unsafe traffic events, while possible behavioural adaptations due to the road users' recognition of being observed are minimized. The literature in this field is vast and diverse, with studies dating back to the 1930s. The aim of this paper is to summarize the research efforts in the domain of road user behavioural observation researc
