Children with medulloblastoma in Bristol are treated surgically and with craniospinal irradiation, and in some cases chemotherapy. Thirteen medium or long term survivors were investigated to determine their growth and endocrine function. Their rate of growth was considerably reduced through the first year of their illness and after spinal irradiation spinal growth was poor. Nine children developed growth hormone deficiency. A study was made of 200 patients with Hodgkin's disease in a prolonged remission (5-12 yrs.) resulting from radiation therapy. In a long-term period after treatment the patients' height and body mass usually correspond to those obtained at examination of the entire population. Cardiovascular complications from irradiation for breast carcinoma were assessed by history, physical examination, ECG recording, exercise test and heart volume determination before and two and six months after treatment in 197 unselected patients. A deterioration in general condition during therapy was reported by about 50 per cent of the patients, with shortness of breath and palpitation of the heart as the most frequent complaints and with a gradual improvement after therapy. Phantom breast syndrome (PBS) developed in 11 out of 31 (35.5%) consecutive young women, who had undergone mastectomy for breast cancer. Eighteen patients suffering from cystic craniopharyngeoma were treated with intracavitary irradiation. The beta-emitting radioisotope 90y (2.25 MeV) was instilled into the cyst following stereotactic puncture of the space-occupying lesion. The surgical approach was planned using angiograms and reconstructed transmission computer tomography (TCT) coronal and saggital sections. Sixteen patients with a rare tumor, adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) involving the external auditory canal, have been studied. Clinically, most patients complained of ear pain, often of several years duration. On physical examination, a mass or a nodule usually was identified in the ear canal. The assessment of activity in bone tumours after irradiation is somewhat uncertain. In most cases, the process of healing cannot be assessed. Twelve patients who developed non-Hodgkin's lymphoma with a follicular pattern during the first two decades of life were studied.
