Primary extramedullary plasmacytoma of the kidney: a case report and literature review.

Primary extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) of the kidney is a rare indolent lymphoma characterized by the monoclonal proliferation of plasma cells outside the bone marrow. Owing to its special site of origin, it is highly prone to misdiagnosis in clinical practice. Herein, we report a case of primary extramedullary plasmacytoma of the kidney. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) of the patient revealed a left renal mass, and renal carcinoma was considered. After adequate preoperative preparation, the patient underwent a radical nephrectomy for renal carcinoma. Pathological and immunohistochemical

Parathyroid carcinoma: from diagnostic challenges to surgical management and long-term outcomes: A single-center retrospective analysis.

Parathyroid carcinoma (PC) is a rare malignant tumor, accounting for <1% of all cases of primary hyperparathyroidism. It is typically characterized by markedly elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels, severe hypercalcemia, and target organ damage. This study presents a single-center experience in the management of patients with PC and provides a review of the relevant literature. The clinical and laboratory data of 8 patients diagnosed with PC based on pathological examination between September 2008 and February 2024 at the Endocrinology Clinic of Akdeniz University Hospital (Antalya, Turkey

Sun protection and skin cancer screening after childhood cancer-A report from the Swiss Childhood Cancer Survivor Study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood cancer survivors (CCS) face elevated skin cancer risk, especially after radiotherapy or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The authors evaluated the prevalence and predictors of sun protection, sunburn, and physician skin examination (PSE) among CCS in Switzerland. METHODS: The authors surveyed CCS diagnosed <21 years and surviving ≥5 years after diagnosis about sun protection, sunburns during last summer, and PSE within the last year. They retrieved cancer-related data from the Swiss Childhood Cancer Registry and used multivariable logistic regression, stra

Surgical treatment of the patient with locally advanced esophageal cancer and concurrent thymoma after neoadjuvant therapy: a case report.

Locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) can be treated effectively with surgical resection following downstaging via preoperative neoadjuvant therapy. This case report details the successful management of a patient with ESCC complicated by thymoma, who underwent one cycle of neoadjuvant therapy followed by surgery, resulting in improved survival. The patient initially presented with dysphagia and was diagnosed with ESCC at a local hospital, where gastroscopy revealed a neoplasm located 28-30 cm from the incisors. Pathological examination confirmed ESCC, and the clinical stag

Primary extramedullary plasmacytoma of the nasal cavity: a case report of a resource-limited setting.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is an uncommon plasma cell neoplasm, representing approximately 3% of all plasma cell disorders, with a predilection for the upper aerodigestive tract. Lesions involving the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are exceedingly rare and may mimic other sinonasal malignancies, posing diagnostic challenges in resource-limited settings. CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old female presented with a gradually progressive right nasal obstruction associated with occasional epistaxis and nasal discharge. Examination revealed a greyish-white irreg

Evaluation of progression-free status at 24 months as a surrogate endpoint for overall survival in patients with human papillomavirus-positive oropharyngeal cancer: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: There is minimal evidence supporting the use of early clinical endpoints to evaluate the activity of initial treatment in human papillomavirus (HPV)-positive oropharyngeal cancer in the context of contemporary therapeutic approaches. The aim of this study was to assess progression-free status at 24 months as a potential surrogate endpoint for overall survival at the patient level, within a large, retrospective cohort of patients with HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancer. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we included all consecutive patients aged 18 years or older with newl

Primary nasopharyngeal Kaposi's sarcoma without cutaneous manifestations: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a neoplastic lymphovascular disorder. It typically appears on the skin of the upper and lower extremities, but can also occur on the mucosal surfaces of the head and neck. The most common site reported for head and neck injuries is within the oral cavity, particularly on the palate, and other mucosal sites, such as the nasopharyngeal area. Moreover, involvement of the nasopharynx without skin involvement is even rarer. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we present a rare case of HIV associated/epidemic KS in a 30-year-old man of African origin, where the primary man

Frequency of urogynecological complications after pelvic radiotherapy.

Pelvic radiotherapy is an integral part of treatment of many gynecological and other pelvic malignancies; however, it is associated with a risk of late urogynecological complications that can significantly affect the patients' quality of life. The most common problems include lower urinary tract symptoms, particularly urgency, urinary incontinence, and radiation cystitis, as well as vaginal stenosis, dryness, dyspareunia, lymphedema, and chronic pelvic pain. The incidence of these complications depends on the total radiation dose, radiotherapy technique used, combination with surgical treatmen

Olfactory Groove Meningioma Detected 10 Months after Cranial Radiotherapy in a Metastatic Ewing Sarcoma Survivor: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Secondary intracranial neoplasms are a well-recognized late complication of cranial radiotherapy. Among these, meningiomas are the most frequently reported radiation-associated tumors. However, olfactory groove meningiomas (OGMs) are uncommon, and their development after cranial irradiation with a very short latency remains exceptionally rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 38-year-old woman with Ewing sarcoma of the right thigh and brain metastases underwent multimodal treatment of surgical resection, VDC-IE chemotherapy, and subsequent cranial radiotherapy (54 Gy in 27 fractions). Inter-reader agreement and diagnostic accuracy of early postoperative magnetic resonance imaging for detecting macroscopic residual disease in neuroblastic tumors.

BACKGROUND: Accurate detection of macroscopic residual disease after neuroblastoma resection is essential for postoperative treatment decisions, including radiotherapy. Standard imaging follow-up is often performed at a time point when postoperative and therapy-related changes may hamper reliable differentiation between residual disease and reactive findings. OBJECTIVE: To assess inter-reader agreement and the diagnostic accuracy of early postoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for detecting residual disease after neuroblastoma surgery. METHODS: This retrospective single-center study

Solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma of the nasal cavity: integrating clinical, radiological and histological findings.

Solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma (SEP) is a rare plasma cell tumour that occurs in soft tissues without systemic involvement. This report describes a rare case of SEP in the nasal cavity, highlighting the diagnostic journey and treatment approach. The patient's nonspecific symptoms, such as right-sided nasal bleeding and facial pain, initially mimicked common nasal disorders. However, the persistence of these symptoms and the discovery of a polypoid mass on nasal endoscopy raised suspicions of a more serious underlying condition, leading to further investigation. Histopathological analysis

Post-Treatment MRI Features on First Follow-Up Imaging in Diffuse Gliomas After Near-Total Resection: A Real-World Exploratory Cohort Study.

Background and Objectives: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is essential for monitoring patients with diffuse gliomas after surgery and adjuvant therapy. However, the prognostic significance of imaging findings observed on the first post-treatment MRI remains incompletely defined in routine clinical practice. This study aimed to evaluate whether MRI features identified on the first post-treatment examination are associated with recurrence-free survival after near-total resection (NTR), defined for this real-world cohort as ≥80% volumetric tumor removal (which differs from the RANO Resect Group

The "perfect storm" in bladder oncology: a case of diverticular carcinoma with plasmacytoid features and its clinical ramifications.

BACKGROUND: Carcinoma arising within a bladder diverticulum is a rare and diagnostically challenging entity. Its management is further complicated by aggressive histological variants such as plasmacytoid urothelial carcinoma (PUC). The anatomical lack of muscularis propria in diverticula predisposes to early extra‑diverticular spread and impedes accurate clinical staging. The coexistence of a diverticular location and plasmacytoid histology creates a high‑risk clinical scenario with limited evidence to guide therapy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 74‑year‑old male with a history of high‑grade urothelia
