BACKGROUND: Guidelines to prevent and treat hypertension advocate the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet.
METHODS: We studied whether a greater concordance with the DASH diet is associated with reduced incidence of hypertension (self-reported) and mortality from cardiovascular disease in 20,993 women initially aged 55 to 69 years. We created a DASH diet concordance score using food frequency data in 1986 and followed the women for events through 2002.

BACKGROUND: The oxygen uptake efficiency slope (OUES) is a new exercise parameter that provides prognostic power in patients with CHF. Little is known about the effects of exercise training (ET) on OUES.
AIM: To describe the response of OUES to 6 months of ET in CHF patients and compare its evolution to that of other exercise variables.
METHODS: 35 patients with CHF (NYHA II-III, age 54+/-9y, LVEF 31+/-10%) performed 3 maximal exercise tests, i.e. at the start, middle and end of a 6 month ET program. OUES, PeakVO(2), ventilatory anaerobic threshold (VAT) and slope VE/VCO(2) were determined.

BACKGROUND: Frequent exacerbations are associated with a faster decline in FEV(1), impaired health status, and worse survival. Their impact and temporal relationship with other outcomes such as functional status, dyspnea, and the multidimensional body mass index, obstruction, dyspnea, exercise capacity (BODE) index remain unknown.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the longitudinal patterns of recovery among workers with compensated occupational back injuries.
METHODS: A longitudinal cohort study, with one-year follow-up via structured telephone interviews, among respondents off work because of "new" back injuries. Self-reported pain intensity was recorded at baseline and at four follow-up time points over the course of one year. Workers who answered the questionnaire on at least three occasions (n = 678) were classified into clusters according to their patterns of pain intensity over time using a two-step cluster analysis.

Here we describe replantation and transplantation as a treatment conducted in a 16-year-old patient following a bicycle accident. An avulsed left central incisor in maxilla was replanted after extra-oral root canal treatment, and the lost right central incisor of the maxilla was replaced by a left lateral incisor of the mandible in the region of the fracture fissure. Follow-up examination at 34 months showed validity of treatment, although slight evidence of replacement resorption in the transplanted and replanted teeth was revealed.

The purpose of this study is to report the outcomes after closed or percutaneous reduction with percutaneous fixation of displaced proximal humeral fractures. Between 1993 and 2002, 58 GSB III total elbow replacements were implanted in 45 patients with rheumatoid arthritis by the same surgeon. At the most recent follow-up, five patients had died (five elbows) and six (nine elbows) had been lost to follow-up, leaving 44 total elbow replacements in 34 patients available for clinical and radiological review at a mean follow-up of 74 months (25 to 143).
