A study was made of the results of immediate repair and controlled mobilization in 156 severed flexor tendons in 68 patients occuring over an 18-month period. Eight patients with 16 tendon injuries could not be followed. Results were obtained from examinations done 6 weeks to 18 months (mean, 5.3 months) after repair. Thirty-one of the 60 patients were less than 20 years old, and 44 of the 60 were less than 30 years old. Twenty-four children with spastic equinovarus deformity due to cerebral palsy were treated by anterior transfer of the posterior tibial tendon and Achilles tendon lengthening. In five patients, the operation was performed on both sides, making a total of 29 feet available for evaluation after an average follow-up of five years. Thirty-two patients, 28 women and 4 men aged from 17 to 57 years were treated surgically for obesity. Their body weight ranged from 90 to 184 kg, with an excess weight from 42% to 180%. In 6 cases the Salmon operation and in 26 the Payne-de Wind operation were performed. Two patients died. In the remaining cases the postoperative course was uneventful and relatively mild. 200 consecutive patients operated on for gastric (GU) or duodenal (DU) ulcer in 1956 to 1957 were followed up until 1974. 25 of them died within five years of primary operation and were excluded to eliminate the possibility of coexisting ulcer and malignancy at the time of operation. In 16 incisors, one canine, and one premolar with an acute periapical infection which had perforated the cortical bone, an apical curettage was carried out. Two hundred and two consecutive patients who underwent resection of an adenocarcinoma of the colon or rectum from January 1958 to December 1972 were evaluated for the development of a metastatic tumor in the lungs. In the 185 patients who survived the 30 day postoperative period, 30 malignant pulmonary lesions were subsequently recognized. Six of these were a solitary lesion and 24 were multiple lesions. A survey is presented on the results of 100 consecutive patients who underwent mitral valve (78 patients) or mitral and aortic and/or tricuspid valve replacement (22 patients) with ball or disc valve prosthesis. The patients were followed-up from 6 to 54 months postoperatively. The mortality for mitral valve replacement was 13 (17%) early deaths (up to one month from operation) and 5 (6%) late deaths. This paper presents the long-term results of 221 thrombendarterectomy operations during the period 1955-61, and of 86 femoro-popliteal venous bypass operations during the period 1961-64. The indication for surgery was in the majority of the patients disabling claudication. When pain at rest or ulceration was present, arterial reconstruction was performed even when the outlook for a lasting result was poor. Eighty patients were operated upon with subcutaneous mastectomy and reconstruction with prosthesis. Seventy operations were performed on both breasts. The indications used were carcinoma in situ in a previous biopsy, pronounced epithelial proliferations on at least two previous occasions or recurring fibrocystic disease after at least two previous biopsies. Since February 1969 carotid sinus nerve stimulators have been implanted in 13 patients with intractable, incapacitating angina pectoris, unrelieved by medical management and, in some cases, revascularization procedures. Four patients died, one on the third postoperative day, the others at 15, 31 and 49 months postoperatively. Two other patients sustained myocardial infarcts, at two weeks and two months postoperatively. Complications were few and transient.
